Off Topic » Best hair clippers for home?

I've been looking into buying some hair clippers for home to maintain my fade haircut between visits to the barber/hairdresser. Does anyone have any recommendations? From my research Wahl (especially those made in USA) appear to be the brand of choice. Is eBay generally the cheapest place?

Biv had wahl and cheap clippers from kmart also over the years, I honestly didnt notice any difference, been shaving the head for almost 20 years now. As long as you oil/clean them get the cheapest.

I'd also say Wahl – very sturdily made and has been very reliable for many years now. No regrets on that purchase.

I'd tried a few different ones prior to getting the wahl (braun ? phillips ? it's been a while ) and they were both more expensive, considerably more cheaply made and obviously much less reliable ( I replaced them when they broke ).

I've had different ones like Breville and Remington. They tended to end up pulling hair, blades going out of alignment, and the Remington cordless unit was just a waste of money, pulled hair from the start, the blades couldn't even be aligned properly.

Have had the Wahl (Icon) for quite a while now. It has been absolutely trouble free, and no complaints from the family when I cut their hair, doesn't need constant oiling either. Because it works like it should it's easy to use, cuts through the hair like butter compared to the others.

Wahl is what many barbers use. HOWEVER they make two types of motor. One is a lesser quality for home users of course. We always get the 'junk'. Obviously this is why some units are cheaper. The better motor is the same one inside the ones mens' barbers use, only I think they have a more robust outer shell.

Uncertain if this is still accurate but I learned Wahl Australia used to have some contractual requirement with Wahl USA, that meant they couldn't sell professional models with the better motor to the general public. WA circumvented that by importing a model not normally available to Australia and WUSA turned a blind eye.

If you want to do buzz-cuts ONLY then you could get the Wahl 'Balder'. But if you want to do other types of cuts like clipping the back and sides quite short, the top longer, and then blending-in those two sections – then get the 'Designer'. It has the same quality motor professional barbers get inside the unit available to them.

It has no DVD and comes with less combs than some other models. That's how they 'con' us into buying the cheaper motor. But you can can find plenty of youtube clips how to use clippers (even rips of the actual Wahl DVD) and extra combs are pretty cheap from the place you buy the clipper, or shopping centre 'hair' shops like Shaver Shop.
