EDMONTON - The Ottawa Redblacks will take a passel of ex-Eskimos and a collective chip on their shoulder when they go for their first CFL franchise win Friday. Earl Watford Jersey . The Redblacks are taking on the Edmonton Eskimos in their second regular season game Friday night. Catch the game live on TSN as the back end of a doubleheader starting at 10pm et/7pm pt. "Im not going to give you the politically correct answer," Ottawa linebacker T.J. Hill told reporters Thursday after the 0-1 Redblacks arrived at Commonwealth Stadium. "No disrespect to the Blue Bombers … but we definitely feel like we let that one slip away. "Weve got to finish, and theres no excuses." The Redblacks jumped out to a 21-7 lead in their opener in Winnipeg last week, but multiple penalties and big mistakes on special teams allowed the Blue Bombers to stage a 36-28 comeback win. Hill is one of eight former Edmonton Eskimos on the Ottawa roster for Fridays game. Hill was a veteran and a longtime locker-room leader for the Eskimos, but was let go in the off-season as the team remodelled its defence under new head coach Chris Jones. Hill said he doesnt feel any added incentive to win on his former home turf against his old mates. "Im always fired up to just have the opportunity to play," he said. Not so for fellow Redblack and former Eskimos receiver Marcus Henry, who was picked up by Ottawa after failing a training camp medical in Edmonton. Henry was asked if he was OK with how things ended for him in Edmonton. "At first no, I wasnt OK with it. It was (a) surprise to me, too," he said. "But coming through the locker-room after I got released, the guys picking me up and stuff, I got over it pretty quick. But it still stings a bit, he added. "Whenever you get released by a team and you go back and play them, theres always a chip on your shoulder," he said. The ex-Eskimos are also in the Ottawa coaching ranks, including head coach Rick Campbell, a former longtime assistant with Edmonton. He said they need to reduce the penalties and protect the football from an Edmonton defence that has already intercepted seven balls en route to a 2-0 record. "We need to take care of the football," said Campbell. Against Winnipeg, the Redblacks were flagged 16 times for 120 yards and gave up big plays on special teams. A 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Winnipegs Demond Washington left the Blue Bombers just two points down with more than 10 minutes to play. On the Eskimos side, quarterback Mike Reilly said they need to execute better in the red zone. So far the Eskimos have scored three TDs in seven trips inside the 20-yard line. Reilly said its not a question of plays or play calling, but execution. "You have to have better focus when youre down in the red zone," he said. "Things happen so much faster in the red zone. Theres very small room for error when youre down there and so you have to be very precise in your plays. "The opportunities are there. We just have to take advantage of them." As for familiarity, Edmonton safety Chris Rwabukamba said it will be nice to see old teammates return — up to a point. "Its fun playing against guys that you know, but when you step on that field, the No. 1 thing you want to do is win," said Rwabukamba. It was so new to them they collectively had no idea how to respond. DeMarcus Ware Jersey . Theya€?d just watched their team crumble in the final three minutes, allowing Real Madrid to score two goals and defeat them 3-2. The cluba€?s fanbase were split in their reactions. Many longstanding supporters were used to disappointment and called in the post-match talk show to say that being disappointed with a 3-2 loss at Real Madrid in the Champions League shows how far the club had come. Yet, there was a section of the supporters who expected more. Millions had been invested into the team and, they said, they wanted to see their club challenging amongst the true great teams of European football. And yet they still wait. Two years have passed for Manchester City since that night at Madrid, but there has been an all too familiar feeling for their players and fans when it comes to the Champions League. It is a tournament that played a huge part in the sacking of Roberto Mancini, after back-to-back years of failing to qualify for the knockout stage, and the hiring of Manuel Pellegrini, who had been seen as an overachiever in the tournament with Villarreal and Malaga. Yet, the familiar tales kept on coming. Not that anyone is feeling sorry for them. City remain relative new boys to the big scene and nowhere has that been more evident than in the UEFA co-efficient system that has handed them difficult groups in each of their four campaigns so far. In 2011, it was Bayern Munich and Napoli that stopped them from progressing, while in 2012, they were exposed, finishing last in a true a€?championsa€? group that consisted of Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid and Ajax. Last season, under Pellegrini, they performed much better, winning five of six matches, but still finished second to reigning champions Bayern Munich. That forced them up against a group winner in the last 16 and they were outclassed over two legs by Barcelona. This year they were handed Bayern Munich. Again. For the third year out of four. And CSKA Moscow for the second-straight season. After losing in Munich on Matchday One of the tournament, City were already facing up to the prospect of likely finishing second once again in their group. Such a scenario, of course, is not always a bad thing, provided City can show that they have the qualities to be mature enough to get the job done in Europe against top teams. Such a test was presented to them on Tuesday night against the fourth team in Group E, high-flying Roma. Two years on from that night in Madrid, the fans were no longer divided in their expectations. Before they played Roma, City had played 21 Champions League matches in four seasons, won eight, drawn four and lost nine. The eight wins had come only against four teams a€“ Villarreal, Viktoria Plzen, CSKA Moscow a€“ all twice a€“ and twice against Bayern Munich when, each time, the German giants had already qualified for the last 16. City fans werena€?t the only ones thinking the club had something to prove. I fancy City to put down a Champions League marker and beat Roma convincingly tonight, tweeted Michael Owen, only hours before the match. Whenever European footballa€?s elite competition comes around almost as familiar as Manchester Citya€?s Champions League opponents is the na?ˉve, borderline biased, analysis from sections of the English media around a Premier League opponent. It happened again at the Etihad on Tuesday. Tony Gale, in charge of providing colour commentary, said about Roma early in the game, that Roma was not as frightening a side as it has been down the years. Shortly before half-time he added that City shouldna€?t be giving this team a chance. The same City who lost to Stoke at home earlier in the month indeed struggled to insert any form of dominance on the game, but Roma played a huge part in that. After 25 minutes, it was already 1-1. City had been handed the perfect start when Maicon pulled Sergio Agueroa€?s shirt and the Argentine stroked home the penalty. The moment of the match, though, happened midway through the first half when Francesco Totti scored his first-ever goal in England with a magnificent finish over Joe Hart. Hart was at fault for being slow to react, before a key slip, but not as culpable as Vincent Kompany who, again, stepped up and wandered out of the backline a€“ to track the intelligent Totti a€“ and Yaya Toure, who simply allowed Seydou Keita to stroll past him into midfield. It was hardly a shining moment for Citya€?s spine. Tactically Pellegrinia€?s side were na?ˉve, playing with just two central midfielders, and Romaa€?s midfield trio took over the game in the first half as Totti dropped deep and even made it four-versus-two at times. David Silva was then forced to drift off the left flank to make up a three and thata€?s why Maicon had so much space to get forward on that flank. Shortly before the hour, Pellegrini removed Edin Dzeko for Frank Lampard and City had more control on the game, but they werena€?t good enough to go on and win the match, as they couldna€?t reach the level of tempo that this club so often shows domestically. a€?We didna€?t play well,a€? admitted the manager afterwards. More familiar tales for City. It was the fourth-successive Champions League season where they had failed to win their opening home match. A team that has won two Premier League titles on the back of some wonderful home performances will know all too well what a challenge that now brings in terms of qualification. They now must win back-to-back clashes with CSKA, something they did last year, and likely find a way to win at home to Bayern Munich and/or in Rome on the final matchday if they want to progress. They certainly have the players to accomplish such a feat, but the truth is the English champions once again failed to deliver when asked to sit at the top table for European footballa€?s showpiece event. Any more performances like this one on a European night and City will be ending their Champions League campaign far too prematurely for a fourth-successive season. Shannon Sharpe Jersey . On February 20, down 2-0 against the Americans with under four minutes to play, it looked as if the Canadian womens hockey teams dream of capturing their fourth straight Olympic gold medal had faded away. Neftali Feliz Jersey . Team Canadas experience though allowed them to overcome the late 2-0 deficit and make history beating the Americans 3-2 in overtime. However, the comeback that happened in less than 15 minutes of playing time took years of experience and preparation. On the bench was Jayna Hefford. A member of every Canadian Olympic team since 1998, Hefford used all of that experience for the tense third period and overtime. "With six, seven minutes left in the third, I thought its not looking good, but that thought only lasted five seconds. Once we got that first one, I knew wed be fine." Hefford and Team Canada faced a big hurdle weeks before the historic gold medal game. Dan Church, their coach since 2012, unexpectedly resigned two months before the Olympics were to begin. Also, many veterans that were expected to carry a lot of the teams responsibilities were surprisingly not selected. "With Dan, we tried to ask some questions to get some answers, but we really didnt find anything. It got to the point where we realized the decision was out of our hands." Under new coach Kevin Dineen, the team spent ten days in Austria to regroup before they headed to Sochi. It was a time for rest and recuperation before the competition since every member of the team was exhausted both physically and mentally. Despite the challenges, the Canadians put together a string of wins that led them to the gold medal game. And the team didnt need any extra motivation when they saw who was at the other end of the ice. "There is no one youd rather beat then the Americans. Theyre the best team outside of us. Thats the team you want to play in any final," says Hefford. Although the Canadians were down a pair of goals, that first tally gave them a lifeline. The second goal tied the game, creating emotions for even the veteran players that thought they had seen it all. "When (Marie-Philip) Poulin got the tying goal, thats the most excited Ive ever been for any moment of a game in any moment of my career," Hefford says. "But in the third period and overtime, you try to contain your emotions a little bit." The team could let their emotions lose eight minutes into overtime when Poulin, who was the hero in Vancouver in 2010, scored again to give Canada yet another gold. "It still feels very surreal how that game dramatically turned. Its such a great feeling and its still hard to believe," says Hefford. Theres very little Hefford has not accomplished in her career but after a fourth gold medal, it would be tempting to go for a fifth in 2018. "After Vancouver I didnt know if I was going to keep playing. I felt really good and I thought I had four more years. But now its time for me to look at my options. Going out after a game like that would be perfect." There is nothing more perfect than going out on top of the hockey world. Lakers, spoke as a representative of current NBA players at a press conference assembled by Sacramento mayor and National Basketball Players Association adviser Kevin Johnson. http://www.baseballbrewersofficial.com/matt-garza-jersey-c-15/ . - First-timer Chris Harris Jr.TORONTO – Doing just enough to lose hockey games, the Maple Leafs playoff chances are dangling on an ever-thinning thread. They matched their second-longest losing skid of the year on Saturday evening, making an error too many in their fourth straight loss, a stinging 4-3 defeat to Montreal at the ACC. Falling further back of the Canadiens – now a five-point gap – and the surging Lightning for the final two spots in the Atlantic division, Toronto is hanging onto to the first wild card position in the East, in danger of falling out altogether if change doesnt come soon enough. “Weve been close, but close isnt good enough right now,” said Dion Phaneuf of four straight losses, all against fellow Eastern contenders vying for a spot in the post-season. Like in narrow losses to Washington, Detroit and Tampa previously, the Leafs shot themselves in the foot just a time or too many on this night, dropping the season series to Montreal in the process. “The margin of error now in these games is so, so, so close that one bounce or one misplay or one unfortunate mistake cost us points,” said head coach Randy Carlyle afterward. A stumbling start and more ineffective goaltending certainly didnt help matters, but it was simple errors in execution that ultimately set the stage for another defeat. Most notable among them were mistakes from two of the teams best players. There was an early and careless neutral zone turnover from Phil Kessel that fed the Canadiens first goal and a later failure from Dion Phaneuf to clear the puck that found the back of the net on Tomas Plekanecs eventual game-winner. “We worked hard,” said Carlyle, his team rallying from a pair of deficits. “[But] we have to work equally as hard and clean up some of the mistakes that we make. Turn the puck over in the neutral ice and it comes back to haunt you. Make a mistake on a turnover penalty killing and it comes back and haunts you. Those are difference-makers in the games and thats what happens when the intensity ramps up in all these games.” Running wild with points in the weeks before and after the Olympic break, Toronto had not lost four straight since the early days of January. They vaulted to 11 wins in 14 games after that stinging streak, requiring a similar resurgence now to keep hold of a second straight playoff berth. The sky may be falling in certain pockets of the city with memories of the infamous 18-wheeler still fresh, but in reality the Leafs situation is not dire to the point that they cant right themselves with 10 games to play. Theyve lost a series of close games of late, doing just enough to lose on each given night. Losses count the same though and that tide – now trending in the negative with clubs in Detroit, Washington and Columbus hunting them down – has to start shifting for the better in a hurry with the Devils up next on Sunday night. “Were still in a good spot,” said Phaneuf, ever optimistic afterward. “Obviously weve slid a little bit because of not winning games, but were still right there.” Five Points 1. Stunted Starts Toronto allowed the first goal for the sixth consecutive game and 37th time this season, actually falling behind by two for the fourth time in those six games. And while they managed to erase that deficit in short order, the trend of digging early holes is a definite negative at this point in the year and any point for that matter. “Its tough coming back,” said James Reimer of the constant need for rallies. “Weve proven that we can do it. Weve got enough character and desire in here to fight back in games, but it obviously makes it a lot tougher on ourselves.” Capitalizing on Kessels giveaway on the opener from Max Pacioretty, Montreal jumped ahead by two on a Rene Bourque breakaway, the Canadiens winger storming by the pair of Cody Franson and Jake Gardiner before beating Reimer with a weak shot glove-side. “I think maybe we just all need to be a little sharper when it starts and obviously me included,” said Reimer. The Leafs dropped to 11-22-4 when yielding the first goal this season. 2. Just Okay Reimers inability to fill the hole left by Jonathan Bernier continued Saturday with the 26-year-old yielding four goals on 36 shots. He owns a .899 save percentage during six appearances in place of the teams injured No. 1. Though he made some fine stops in allowing his team to rally from the early 2-0 hole – including a glove stop just moments before Joffrey Lupul scored the Leafs first goal – Reimer ultimately could not deliver enough of the timely big saves required for victory. This was evident on Plekanecs game-winner. Reimer slid right to left on Andrei Markovs cross-ice feed to Plekanec, but could not keep the shot – from just above the goal-line – from finding a slight hole. “I feel like its a tough bounce,” he said. “Obviously they made a good play to put it through the seam, but I thought I gave myself a chance to get over there, but it just found a way through.” Reimer remains winless on home ice since Jan. 15, last winning a start on Jan. 21. Bernier meanwhile continues to inch back from a groin injury, but not quickly enough for the teams recent fortunes. The 25-year-old skated for a third straight day Saturday morning, but will miss his fifth straight game Sunday against the Devils. “He still has some issues as far as hes not 100 per cent,” said Carlyle, &lldquo;so until hes 100 per cent hes not available to us. Custom Milwaukee Brewers Jerseys. ” 3. Slow Ride A slogging rehabilitation of nearly five months finally came to an end Saturday for Dave Bolland, who returned to the Toronto lineup against Montreal. It was the first game for the 27-year-old since Nov. 2, when a tendon on the outside of his left ankle was sliced by the skate blade of Canucks forward Zack Kassian. He missed 56 games. “Hes progressed along over the last three weeks to a point where he feels and the doctors feel medically thats he close to a 100 per cent ready,” said Carlyle, wary of driving up expectations for Bolland, a favourite of his upon landing with the Leafs last summer. “I dont want to put too much emphasis on him specifically because when a player hasnt played in 60 games its a lot to ask of him to come back in and be where he wouldve been coming out of training camp and playing with our hockey club early in the season.” Bollands addition gave Carlyle his first full group of forwards at any point this season with neither injuries nor suspensions on the docket. All of which allowed him to comfortably employ four lines in the fashion he may have imagined at the start of the year. Indicative of a balanced attack and a considerable shift from recent weeks and much of the year, Colton Orr was the lone forward to play fewer than eight minutes against Montreal. “It gives you a little bit more depth throughout your lineup, a veteran guy, and it kind of slots people more into where we envisioned them at the beginning of the year,” said Carlyle, who reunited Bolland with Mason Raymond and David Clarkson. Bolland, whom the Leafs made room for by sending Carter Ashton and Peter Holland to the Marlies, was lost to injury in early November just a week after Tyler Bozak went out with a hamstring issue, drastically affecting the teams depth at centre ice. He played nine minutes against the Canadiens, keeping his shift lengths short at just 33 seconds. “That first shift was probably the hardest,” Bolland said. “Its getting the timing and figuring things out out there. You sort of got to get used to it. I think the heartbeat was hurting a little bit too.” 4. Secondary Offence Joffrey Lupul and Nazem Kadri had combined for four goals in the previous 14 games, but landed a pair against the Canadiens. Lupul fired a rocket by Carey Price for the Leafs first goal midway through the first, Kadri depositing a feed from his 30-year-old teammate on a power play goal later which evened the score at three. With Phil Kessel and the teams top line cooling some in recent days – they did account for the second Toronto goal with Tyler Bozak notching his 16th – contributions from the likes of Lupul and Kadri will be required in the final weeks of the regular season. Toronto forwards had only seven goals in the previous six games, but accounted for all three on Saturday. 5. Ranger on the Mend Paul Ranger was in predictable shock in the immediate aftermath, but realized hed be okay when he was able to move his legs, hands and feet. Reversing to his left with less than five seconds remaining in the first period of a Wednesday tilt with Tampa, the 29-year-old was drilled from behind by Lightning forward Alex Killorn. He was helped off the ice on a stretcher, his teammates looking on with concern. “I remember just feeling pain,” said Ranger, suffering a neck injury on the play. “I know that my body and my mind just went into preservation mode. All I could think was just dont move, stay straight and breathe. I just kind of breathed three in, three out for the next 3-4 hours.” Ranger was taken to a local hospital that night, assessed and discharged. He remained off the ice for a third straight day Saturday and did not play against the Canadiens, his impending return to the line-up uncertain. Though he received word from Killorn in the aftermath of the collision, believing that no harm was intended, the Whitby, Ontario native nonetheless hopes that hits from behind receive more attention and study for improvement. “I think its something that happens a lot in our game and its dangerous,” he said. “Im thankful Im really strong physically and really fit and I think that really helped and probably saved me a little bit in this situation. I wouldnt want anyone else to go through that period, but especially someone whos maybe not as strong or not as heavy you could say.” Stats-Pack 212 – Man games lost to injury for the Leafs this season, including 56 from Dave Bolland, who returned from an ankle injury against Montreal. 2-2-1 – Leafs record versus the Canadiens this season. 9:01 – Ice-time for Dave Bolland in his first game since Nov. 2. .899 – Save percentage for James Reimer since Jonathan Bernier went out with injury. 5 – Number of 20-goal seasons for Joffrey Lupul, who scored his 20th of the year against Montreal. 8:54 – Ice-time for David Clarkson on Saturday, his lowest of the season. 11-22-4 – Leafs record this season when they allow the first goal. Monta Ellis had 24 points and Dirk Nowitzki scored 22 with 11 rebounds for the Mavericks, who have dropped two in a row following a six-game winning streak. Dallas forward Chandler Parsons called the loss against the short-handed Pacers embarrassing. We have no room for this, especially in the Western Conference, how tight everything is, said Parsons, who scored 16. There is no excuse for this. We have to come out and play harder, and we cant allow a team like this to come into our place and beat us. Dallas shot 50 percent from the field, but the difference was Indiana went 13- for-26 from long range, while the Mavericks shot 8-for-24 from the 3-point arc. The Mavericks hit the road for a four-game trek following the holiday. They will visit the Toronto Raptors, Philadelphia 76ers, Chicago Bulls and Milwaukee Bucks. The International break disrupts Premier League play again this weekend at a time when proceedings are gaining momentum. Red Auerbach Jersey . This is the second international break in the last month – so much for continuity. Through seven matches, the logjam remains atop the table, with just four points separating first from seventh place. Just as intriguing, only three points stand between ninth place Manchester United and Norwich City, sitting in 18th and in the relegation zone. No need to wax poetic this week. To keep your BPL palate satiated, 10 Premier League thoughts heading into the International dates. 1. The Premier League is still buzzing from Adnan Janusajs two-goal debut saving Manchester Uniteds blushes last weekend. Ive been planning a Belgian of the Week section in this space, and Janusaj would fit the bill as worthy winner for Matchday 7. The excitement surrounding the 18-year-old is understandable. Ive been writing about the young players talent for months. His wonderful left foot (he scored with his right foot as well in the 2-1 win), his confidence taking on players, his silky smooth distribution; theres a whole lot to like. It must be remembered this is just one standout performance and Janusaj has a ways to go. Hell have to work on his frame and speed – two glaring physical attributes that will most certainly come in time. Consistency of performance and greater understanding of the game will reveal itself. Whatever may come of Janusaj, remember these are early days. Janusaj was playing at the Dallas Cup with Manchester Uniteds youth team short months ago. Hes jumped from playing in front of hundreds into the cauldron of the Premier League. The narrative, knee-jerk as ever, has been over the top. Comparisons to other young greats (he shares the same date of birth as Cristiano Ronaldo) are far too premature. As is the assumption hes set to pack up and leave Old Trafford at seasons end, just as Paul Pogba forced the clubs hand in his move to Juventus. Pogba has been candid that his inability to win over the manager forced a move. A new contract for Janusaj is a near certainty. So leave any panic to the alarmist in your life. Janusaj also put to bed any immediate discussion about his international future, denying a call-up to Belgium for World Cup qualifiers, and instead focusing on securing regular first team football at United. Janusaj is taking his rise in stride, and so should we. By the looks of it, he has star quality. But its easy for young players to fall off the rail under greater expectations and scrutiny. Even at United, in 2009 Federico Macheda scored a wonder goal winner at Aston Villa in the third minute of time added on at 17 years of age, drawing instant acclaim. Now 22, Macheda has failed to find his way and has been subject to numerous loan moves that havent helped his game. Lets give Janusaj some time before making any bold declarations of what he is and what he will be. 2. Wayne Rooney spoke publicly for the first time since his summer of discontent, claiming hes happy with his football and settled at Manchester United under David Moyes. Rooney claims his soured relationship with Sir Alex Ferguson stemmed from the former manager playing Rooney in the midfield, a position he did not want to play. The 27-year-old admitted his stance was selfish. Although now settled, Rooney stopped short of committing his long-term future to the club. At this point, the conversation about Rooneys future is irrelevant. Rooney, when fit, has been the top player for Moyes over the first two months. His work rate has been outstanding, and movement on and off the ball has been better than it has in years. A motivated Rooney is what this team needs. He has found a proper role under Moyes and regained his edge he has lacked in recent times. As long he maintains top form and continues to hold his place in the side playing off Robin van Persie along the front line, United will pay him whatever he requires to keep his spot in the side. No player is bigger than the club. But no player is more important over this transition period for Moyes than Rooney. Just 47 goals away from Sir Bobby Charltons club record of 249, such a prestigious record at the biggest club in the world is something neither club nor player can ignore. It wont be just Rooney acting selfish, the club will too. It may not be a perfect marriage, but its one that works. 3. An unsung hero is emerging at Arsenal. The deadline day big money acquisition of Mesut Ozil stole the headlines. But the addition of Mathieu Flamini has been another true difference maker. Flamini returned to Arsenal after five years at AC Milan. At the time, it seemed the Frenchman would be a role player. His importance cannot be understated, forcing Jack Wilshere up the park in a less familiar role, and the move has paid off in spades. Flamini fits the mold of a quiet, no-nonsense central midfielder who will allow the players around him to play. Hes efficient, tactically sound and his runs and passes are simple. Hes not all action and will never be a box-to-box, end-to-end presence. Thats not what Arsenal needs anyway. Flamini had only two wayward passes in the 1-1 draw on the weekend at the Hawthorns and has started every match in the Premier League and Champions League with the exception of his debut. The substance here doesnt require flash. It seems like Flamini has been around forever, yet hes only 29 and has plenty of game left. Its these types of character moves, bringing team players into the squad that wins trophies. The acquisition was understated, or even an afterthought, but bringing Flamini back to the Emirates has been a stroke of genius by Arsene Wenger. 4. Football has never been more attack oriented. Fluid, dynamic attacking players reflect the way the game is going, and top teams are being rewarded for more adventurous play. Southampton is a team who added attacking flair in the summer with a club record move for Dani Osvaldo from Roma. The Premier League has been an adjustment for the Italian international, scoring one goal thus far. But patience can be preached with Osvaldo while the team boasts the top defensive record in the BPL. Southampton have only conceded two goals this season; thats six fewer than league leaders Arsenal. And go figure, Southampton sits fourth in the Premier League. Team defending and shape has been efficient under Mauricio Pochettino. The team conceded 60 times last campaign with only five teams having a worse goal against record. A less flashy off-season move was the purchase of centre-back Dejan Lovren from Lyon, who has shored up things along the back line alongside the underrated Jose Fonte. The tandem, in combination with centre-midfielders Victor Wanyama and tackle-machine Morgan Schneiderlin have given strength down the spine. The true starring figure has been goalkeeper Artur Boruc, arguably the top player at his position in the league thus far. 19 saves, many of the highlight reel variety and five clean sheets have provided strength in goal for a team with a core of young players dependent on leadership at the back. The Saints will be hard pressed to keep up their current form. But the competitive nature of this team shouldnt surprise. 5. Spurs slip up at home to West Ham to the tune of a 3-0 loss was the shock result of the weekend. It was all a mess for Andre Villas-Boas side, forcing the issue in attack and allowing sloppy play to seep into the teams defensive performance in the second half. Spurs hadnt conceded more than a goal in a match all season and for the complete breakdown to come against a scoring deficient West Ham is entirely surprising. Other than a wonderful individual effort by Ravel Morrison, the other West Ham goals were defenders being muscled off the ball, failing to get in proper position, and losing concentration; all more mental issues than anything else. As far as squad selection, AVB elected to hand Jermain Defoe a rare start and it backfired. Defoe seems a player more suited to life in Cup competitions rather than a player to rely upon in the Premier League. Once Roberto Soldado came on, there was too little action from the Spaniard. Hes a talented goal scorer, but he needs to become more active in his play. Superior movement off the ball is required for Soldado to be a reliable big match option for Spurs. This team is good enough to be at the top of the table. How they respond from this setback will say a lot about the true makeup of the team. Its time to grow up. 6. There need be growing worry about the durability of Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany. The centre-back is the most important player to Citys title credentials, yet he cant stay fit. Kompany will miss Belgiums World Cup qualifiers and faces another spell on the sidelines after leaving Citys 3-1 win over Everton after just 34 minutes with a quad injury. This is Kompanys second injury requiring missed action of the season. Over the last 18 months, Kompany has dealt with three separate calf injuries, a hamstring and groin issues. Kompany is just 27 years old and supposed to be in peak physical condition. As the injuries mount, so does the concern. Short term, City has a big match with Chelsea at the end of the month. If not fit, Jose Mourinho will look to expose the back line with team speed in high positions. But longer term, another top centre-back need be recruited to manage Kompanys minutes more effectively. Manchester United had to do so with the greatest of care with Rio Ferdinand after a myriad of injury issues. The problem for Manuel Pellegrini is he doesnt have requisite cover at the back at present time. Joleon Lescott continues to be a nightmare and unable to play adequately alongside Matija Nastasic. The thought of Javi Garcia playing out of position in big matches is one that would have other teams salivating. As good as City is in attack, they need a fit Kompany to maintain proper structure and lead from the back in all competitions. 7. The raves reviews of Liverpools standout early play continue to ring in. There is a lot to like about the Luis Suarez/Daniel Sturridge partnership in attack, no matter how over the top the praise has become. The movement off the ball is most impressive, with neither player taking up a true high position. The inter-play and the freedom manager Brendan Rodgers has given the duo is whats making it so fluid. The preference of each player is to drift out to the left, but they are doing so with great patience and positional awareness. Rodgers is making all the right moves at the back as well. Against Crystal Palace, Rodgers deployed three at the back, showing intent to attack. The formation works with Steven Gerrard and Lucas playing deeper in holding midfield positions. The variety to which Liverpool can play at a high level is impressive. The formations are flexible and the players dont seem effected by the various tactical changes. Hats off to Rodgers as he continues to get the most out of what he has. 8. There are only 20 managerial jobs in the Premier League. When a job comes available, its hard to turn down the opportunity. That opportunity knocked for Gus Poyet at Sunderland, and the Uruguayan jumped at the chance to take the job. Good luck, Gus. Youre going to need it. Poyet did a wonderful job at Brighton, bringing the club to the brink of Premier League promotion. After a controversial falling out, its plain to see why Poyet wanted back on the job as soon as possible. Problem being, this Sunderland team may be the worse place for the next step in his managerial career. Although its just seven games in, Sunderland are stuck on one point and face a tough go of it, with Swansea away before meeting fierce rival Newcastle in a statement match in the coming weeks. Sunderland brought 14 new players to the club in the summer, and its far-fetched to believe a new manager can bring this group of relative unknowns closer together, forming a chemistry and identity while navigating through murky waters. Dont look for the bank to re-open for transfers in January. Poyet was known for wanting complete control of transfers at Brighton. Director of football Roberto de Fanti and chief scout Valentino Angeloni were instrumental in the busy summer business working hand in hand with Paolo Di Canio. The gentlemen can say they will all be on the same page. But until further evidence, its all lip service. Fact is, the team isnt good enough. Neither are the players. The passionate supporters of the Black Cats deserve better than the current climate. Poyet will have to pull a rabbit out of his hat to get this one right. 9. Cardiff City promotion was a wonderful story of perseverance for the Welsh club. The good vibes have continued into this Premier League season. The magical 3-2 home victory over Manchester City provided some of the scenes of the season. Now stories of discontent and questionable decision-making behind the scenes threaten the goodwill and could derail positive strides on the field. First came reports last weekend of players banning owner Vincent Tan from the locker room over a row about unpaid bonus payments. Then on Tuesday, head of recruitment and right-hand man of manager Malky Mackay, Iain Moody was replaced by a 23-year-old friend of the owners son, with no said footballing experience. The latest rumours have Mackay being asked to leave his position; something the manager refuses to do. The players clearly play for their manager. Any such move would shake the club to its core. Cardiff City stadium was a fortress in winning the League Championship last campaign. Cardiff supporters have already endured the owner changing the colours from their tradition blue to red. Now discontent is taking the dysfunction to intolerable levels. This is certainly a situation to monitor. It would be an absolute shame if the clubs historic rise to the top tier unravels as such. 10. A BBC State of the Game study revealed English footballers account for less than a third of minutes played in the Premier League thus far this season. The figure is substantially lower in comparison to other nationals playing in their respective leagues across Europe. These latest findings will raise the voice of the disheartened masses about the state of the game in England. A national team struggling through World Cup qualifying with little success in recent memory combined with a league whose biggest stars reside from other countries doesnt sit well with the proud footballing nation. Add Jack Wilsheres patriotic call for what it means to be English and represent country, expect a reaction calling for limitations on foreign players in the Premier League. This line of thinking couldnt be more off base. Its not about putting restrictions or foreign players. Its about proper development from within the country. This starts at the youth level. Its the way the players are being taught to play the game. Its the startling lack of top trained and progressive thinking English coaches. Its about redeveloping the identity of how England should play as a nation, bringing the country up to modern standard with a refreshed tactical and skill development approach. The reason why more English players arent playing at the top level is they arent good enough. Its the hard to swallow reality of where the bulk of English players stand at the current time. Theres something ironic about a call for restrictions on foreign players in a league that benefits so significantly from their global popularity and the financial windfall stemming from their reach and the relatable nature of their product. The 27-year-old pummelled four sixes in a row off the bowling of Ben Stokes at the start of the last over in the final to dramatically deny England victory at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. His third six over long off brought the scores level, but he admitted that maximum was really down to good luck as he followed the advice from his batting partner Marlon Samuels to swing for the hills. Samuels is spoken to by the umpires after exchanging words with Ben Stokes I miscued the third one, but a 65-metre six and a 94-metre six are still six runs, Brathwaite told ESPN Cricinfo. I just got it over, kind of spooned it over long-off. And then, I knew the West Indies are world champions, but I didnt want to get too far ahead of myself.Samuels and Stokes, who have a history of onfield clashes, were involved in verbal exchanges during the final over which led to the West Indies batsman being fined 30 per cent of his match fee.An unrepentant Samuels taunted Stokes at the post-match press conference by saying the England all-rounder should have been aware that winding him up would only backfire, but that he doesnt learn. Marlon Samuels had some more to say about Ben Stokes following West Indies win over England in the World T20 final. Brathwaite was more sympathetic on Monday, calling Stokes an absolute legend in his own right. You shouldnt forget what he has done for England in the past couple of months, Brathwaite added. Captain Sam Warburton says Wales are tired of losing to the southern hemisphere giants after their 39-21 defeat against New Zealand. Kevon Looney Jersey . Warren Gatlands side led 18-15 at the interval after first-half tries from Taulupe Faletau and Rhys Webb, as Wales looked to claim victory in New Zealand for the first time in 63 years, but the All Blacks were too strong for their northern hemisphere opponents in the second half and a brace from Waisake Naholo alongside scores from Kieran Read and Julian Savea saw the world champions seal victory. Moss hit a grand slam and the Oakland Athletics gave Samardzija more run support than he has had all season in a 13-1 victory over the Houston Astros on Thursday. "I didnt realize it went over the fence," Moss said. "I thought it was going to be a sacrifice fly. Then I saw it bounce around and was shocked. Thats not a home run at night. Being a day game, the ball carries better." Jed Lowrie had three hits and drove in a run for the As, who have the best record (63-38) in baseball and are a season-best 25 games over .500. Chris Carter hit a home run for the Astros, who fell to 2-4 since the All-Star break. Samardzija (2-1) gave up a leadoff single to Jose Altuve and then retired 10 straight before Carters 20th home run put Houston on the board. He did not walk a batter and struck out six. He retired 12 of 13 following Carters blast. Carter was the lone Astro to get past second base against Samardzija, who received a combined 13 runs of support over his final six starts with the Cubs. "I was just trying to get quick innings and not keep the defence out there very long," Samardzija said. "I wanted to keep them in hitting rhythm. When you get a lead like that, you just take a deep breath." Samardzija was 2-7 with the Cubs despite a 2.83 ERA. He entered with the third-lowest run support in the majors at 3.05 runs per outing. "Im having a lot of fun playing here," Samardzija said. "I just attacked the zone and threw a lot of fastballs." Scott Feldman (4-8) lost his straight start, lasting 5 1-3 innings. He allowed six runs and nine hits, walking five and striking out four. "He battled but at the same time they did a tremendous job of hitting with runners in scoriing position," Astros manager Bo Porter said. Damian Jones Jersey. . "Thats pretty much what was the difference in the ballgame." Feldman allowed at least six runs for just the third time this season but for the second time in three starts. He has allowed 16 runs and 27 hits over his last 17 2-3 innings. "It was a battle for him all day," Porter said. "Early in the game he really had his breaking ball working, and they started laying off and made him come back into the zone." The As were ahead 4-1 entering the sixth inning when Moss hit his third grand slam of the season. "You want to cash them in with runners on base," Moss said. "It was a situation where the guy had to make a good pitch and I hit it. I had the bases loaded in the at-bat before and ended up hitting a weak grounder to first." Stephen Vogt added a three-run double in the eighth. Josh Reddick, who had two doubles, added a sacrifice fly. Donaldson and Derek Norris, who had three hits, each drove in runs in the third. San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork. Nolito Jersey .com) - The San Jose Sharks placed defenseman Justin Braun and forward Tommy Wingels on injured reserve Tuesday. Berdych and Stepanek played all five matches when the Czechs beat Spain 3-2 in the final last November in Prague to win the countrys first title as an independent nation. There is a lot of uncertainty in the Eastern Conference playoff race, as the March 5th trade deadline approaches, which means a lot can change in a short period of time before the March 5th trade deadline. Scott Cullen presents the 2014 Trade Deadline Playbook for the Eastern Conference. Its been accepted that the Pittsburgh Penguins and Boston Bruins are clearly the top teams in the Eastern Conference, but there are so many teams still involved in the playoff race that buyers and sellers cant be easily differentiated without a few more results. Buffalo, Florida and the New York Islanders are the three teams that can be considered sellers, but there are six teams between 61 and 64 points, with Detroit (64 points in 58 games) currently holding the final playoff spot. If a few more of those teams fall further behind than their current two or three-point deficits, that could help initiate more trade activity. A couple of notes about the following chart: Restricted Free Agents (RFA) have contracts that expire this summer, barring a contract extension in the meantime, but their current team retains the right to match a contract offer so long as they make the requisite qualifying offer. While restricted free agents havent moved a lot, its worth noting when decision time is coming on a young players contract. Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA) have contracts that will expire this summer and, without a contract extension, they will be free to sign with whatever team they choose on July 1. These are the players that often move in "rental"-type deals, ideally providing a short-term fix with minimal commitment required. Top prospects are the top five players in each organization, but other top prospects may be listed among other players of interest. Contending teams may be more likely to dangle a prospect or two as they try to find that final piece for their playoff mix, while its safe to assume that young and rebuilding teams arent going to move top prospects unless they get a significant long-term piece in return. Other players of interest will include prospects who have spent some time in the NHL this season as well as players under contract for future seasons that may have some level of attractiveness on the trade market. IMPORTANT: Just because a player is listed as being of interest, it doesnt mean he will be traded or should be traded. Some may just be of interest for teams looking to hit a home run when trying to swing a deal or they are players that may be considered to be underachieving for the money they are due over the rest of their contract. Generally, then, heres a rough guide for which players each Eastern Conference team might have at their disposal in order to make a trade leading up to the deadline. The Western Conference Playbook can be viewed here. BOSTON BRUINS UFA in 2014: Jarome Iginla, Shawn Thornton, Chad Johnson. RFA in 2014: Reilly Smith, Jordan Caron, Torey Krug, Matt Bartkowski. Top Prospects: Malcolm Subban, G, Providence (AHL)Ryan Spooner, C, Providence (AHL)Alexander Khokhlachev, C, Providence (AHL)Joe Morrow, D, Providence (AHL)Seth Griffith, RW, Providence (AHL) Others of Interest: Adam McQuaid, Anthony Camara, Ryan Fitzgerald, Matt Fraser, Zach Trotman. No-Trade Clauses: Milan Lucic (modified), David Krejci (modified), Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand, Loui Eriksson, Chris Kelly, Zdeno Chara, Johnny Boychuk (modified), Dennis Seidenberg (limited). The Plan: The Bruins have been getting by just fine since D Dennis Seidenberg suffered his season-ending knee injury, but finding a veteran defenceman to eat up some of those minutes has to be a priority for a team that is expected to challenge for a title. Its one thing to get quality minutes from Matt Bartkowski and Kevan Miller, its another to go into the playoffs with them taking prominent roles and Bartkowski has been playing about 21 minutes per game since the start of January. The Bruins made some moves in the offseason, notably shaking up their right wing, but there is a lot of continuity on this roster, with a stable core that has enjoyed playoff success in recent seasons. BUFFALO SABRES UFA in 2014: Matt Moulson, Steve Ott, Cody McCormick, Zenon Konopka, John Scott, Matt DAgostini, Kevin Porter, Henrik Tallinder, Alexander Sulzer, Ryan Miller. RFA in 2014: Tyler Ennis, Marcus Foligno, Jamie McBain, Brayden McNabb. Top Prospects: Rasmus Ristolainen, D, Rochester (AHL)Nikita Zadorov, D, Rochester (AHL)Joel Armia, RW, Rochester (AHL)Jake McCabe, D, Wisconsin (Big 10)Mark Pysyk, D, Rochester (AHL) Others of Interest: Drew Stafford, Mikhail Grigorenko, Johan Larsson, J.T. Compher, Matt Hackett. No-Trade Clauses: Christian Ehrhoff (modified), Ryan Miller (limited). The Plan: New GM Tim Murray gets to put his stamp on the organization and has a challenging position to take right off the bat if hes going to deal G Ryan Miller, who has clearly been the Sabres best player this season. But, Miller will be an unrestricted free agent and is attractive enough that he should bring a quality package in return. There are several other Sabres veterans that could be moved, including LW Matt Moulson, C Steve Ott and D Henrik Tallinder, and its easy enough to look at the Sabres and shed all veterans as they build for the future -- expecting that they are still a few years away from icing a competitive team -- but Buffalo will have to keep a certain number of vets around if only to reach the salary floor next season. CAROLINA HURRICANES UFA in 2014: Manny Malhotra, Radek Dvorak, Joni Pitkanen, Ron Hainsey, Mike Komisarek, Anton Khudobin, Justin Peters. RFA in 2014: Jiri Tlusty, Drayson Bowman, Nathan Gerbe, Justin Faulk, Brett Bellemore. Top Prospects: Ryan Murphy, D, Charlotte (AHL)Victor Rask, C, Charlotte (AHL)Brock McGinn, LW, Guelph (OHL)Phil Di Giuseppe, LW, Michigan (Big 10)Danny Biega, D, Charlotte (AHL) Others of Interest: Alexander Semin, Riley Nash, Jay Harrison, Justin Shugg. No-Trade Clauses: Eric Staal, Jordan Staal, Tuomo Ruutu, John-Michael Liles, Mike Komisarek, Cam Ward. The Plan: Right on the edge of the playoff picture, the Hurricanes are too close to sell, so they could make a move to upgrade in the short-term while not surrendering future value because their crop of prospects isnt great. The Canes have an excess in goal, carrying three on their NHL roster now that Cam Ward is healthy, and that could lead to a minor deal, shipping out Justin Peters. If G Anton Khudobin continues to hold the crease, its also feasible that the Hurricanes might consider a new home for Ward, though that deal might be easier to orchestrate in the offseason. COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS UFA in 2014: Marian Gaborik, Derek MacKenzie, Blake Comeau, Nikita Nikitin, Curtis McElhinney. RFA in 2014: Ryan Johansen, Corey Tropp, David Savard.. Top Prospects: Tim Erixon, D, Springfield (AHL)Alexander Wennberg, LW, Frolunda (SEL)Kerby Rychel, LW, Guelph (OHL)Oscar Dansk, G, Erie (OHL)Oliver Bjorkstrand, RW, Portland (WHL) Others of Interest: Artem Anisimov, Mark Letestu, Cam Atkinson, Matt Calvert, Jack Johnson, Mike Reilly, Marko Dano. No-Trade Clauses: Marian Gaborik, Nathan Horton, R.J. Umberger, James Wisniewski (modified), Fedor Tyutin (modified). The Plan: The Blue Jackets are in the playoff picture and have been there largely without much contribution from RW Marian Gaborik, so they could use Gaborik -- a pending UFA -- as a trade chip, or simply add him back into the lineup for a scoring boost. The challenge, and its an enviable one, with adding Gaborik to the lineup is that the Blue Jackets have a relatively deep and balanced group up front. Ryan Johansen is their one emerging star, but the rest of their forwards can be moved up and down the depth chart and its worked well enough that maybe the Blue Jackets would be willing to part with Gaborik, but theyre also a team that doesnt have game-breaking scorers and, while that hasnt been Gaboriks effect this season (scoring five goals and 12 points in 18 games), he has that pedigree. Otherwise, there may be some interest in D Jack Johnson and, as some have noted, the Blue Jackets would do well to listen to any teams expressing serious interest. DETROIT RED WINGS UFA in 2014: Daniel Alfredsson, Mikael Samuelsson, Todd Bertuzzi, Dan Cleary, Patrick Eaves, Kyle Quincey, Jonas Gustavsson. RFA in 2014: Tomas Tatar, Luke Glendening, Danny DeKeyser. No-Trade Clauses: Pavel Datsyuk (partial), Stephen Weiss (modified), Daniel Alfredsson, Mikael Samuelsson, Todd Bertuzzi (modified), Danny Cleary, Niklas Kronwall, Jonathan Ericsson (modified), Jimmy Howard, Jonas Gustavsson (modified). The Plan: In a tough spot as it pertains to the playoff chase because leading scorer Henrik Zetterberg left the Olympics with a back injury and its been tough sledding through injuries for Detroit this season already. While injuries have contributed to the Red Wings struggles this year, they have also allowed the next generation of Red Wings forwards -- including Gustav Nyquist, Tomas Tatar, Tomas Jurco, Riley Sheahan -- to play. If theyre pushing for a playoff spot, the Wings always have assets that they can move for immediate help. FLORIDA PANTHERS UFA in 2014: Marcel Goc, Brad Boyes, Scott Gomez, Krystofer Barch, Jesse Winchester, Mike Weaver, Tom Gilbert, Mike Mottau, Ryan Whitney, Matt Gilroy, Tim Thomas, Scott Clemmensen. RFA in 2014: Jimmy Hayes, Dmitry Kulikov, Erik Gudbranson, Dylan Olsen. Top Prospects: Drew Shore, C, San Antonio (AHL)Alex Petrovic, D, San Antonio (AHL)Mike Matheson, D, Boston College (HE)Vincent Trocheck, C, San Antonio (AHL)Rocco Grimaldi, RW, North Dakota (WCHA) Others of Interest: Tomas Kopecky, Sean Bergenheim, Shawn Matthias, Jacob Markstrom, Kyle Rau, Quinton Howden, Colby Robak. No-Trade Clauses: Tomas Fleischmann (modified), Scottie Upshall (modified), Brian Campbell (limited), Tim Thomas. The Plan: There was a bit of a competitive stint after their terrible start, but the Panthers have fallen back again and are playing for next season. There are several veterans to shop heading towards the deadline and young players should get ample opportunity to play big minutes in the final quarter of the season. Perhaps the most interesting decision involves veteran D Tom Gilbert, a bargain free agent signing after he was bought out by Minnesota last year, who has had a fine year on the Panthers top pair, which would figure to make him appealing as a trade chip, but maybe hes been good enough that the Panthers would rather have Gilbert as part of their defensive core for the next few seasons too. MONTREAL CANADIENS UFA in 2014: Brian Gionta, George Parros, Andrei Markov, Francis Bouillon, Douglas Murray. RFA in 2014: Lars Eller, Dale Weise, Ryan White, P.K. Subban. Top Prospects: Nathan Beaulieu, D, Hamilton (AHL)Jarred Tinordi, D, Hamilton (AHL)Sven Andrighetto, RW, Hamilton (AHL)Sebastian Collberg, RW, Frolunda (SEL)Dalton Thrower, D, Vancouver (WHL) Others of Interest: David Desharnais, Michael&nnbsp;Bournival, Michael McCarron, Christian Thomas, Jacob De La Rose. Sergio Aguero Jersey. No-Trade Clauses: Tomas Plekanec (modified), Brian Gionta, Daniel Briere, Rene Bourque (modified), Travis Moen (modified), Andrei Markov (modified), Josh Gorges (limited). The Plan: The Canadiens are in playoff position, so theyre theoretically in the market to add, rather than subtract, but theyre also saddled with the likes of Daniel Briere and Rene Bourque who arent producing nearly enough to match their contracts. If the Canadiens are going to make noise this season, though, it may be a result of players like LW Alex Galchenyuk and D Alexei Emelin performing better as they come back from injuries. Emelin endured a rough start to the year, but was making progress prior to joining Team Russia for the Olympics and Galchenyuk, the second-year forward, has been productive enough, though he could get a few more minutes if the Habs are going to take advantage of his high-end skill. NEW JERSEY DEVILS UFA in 2014: Jaromir Jagr, Ryan Carter, Steve Bernier, Stephen Gionta, Marek Zidlicky, Mark Fayne, Martin Brodeur. RFA in 2014: Andrei Loktionov, Jacob Josefson. Top Prospects: Jon Merrill, D, Albany (AHL)Eric Gelinas, D, Albany (AHL)Damon Severson, D, Kelowna (WHL)Reid Boucher, LW, Albany (AHL)Stefan Matteau, RW, Albany (AHL) Others of Interest: Michael Ryder, Damien Brunner, Reece Scarlett, Raman Hrabarenka. No-Trade Clauses: Travis Zajac, Patrik Elias, Ryane Clowe, Dainius Zubrus, Anton Volchenkov, Marek Zidlicky, Martin Brodeur. The Plan: On the fringe of playoff contention, the Devils have some bodies to move if they decide to go that way. Jagr has resisted trade talk, which is fair enough since hes been a bit of nomad since returning to the league, but hes had such a strong season that a team seeking an offensive upgrade would have to consider him (how about finally joining Tomas Plekanec in Montreal?). Martin Brodeur says he hasnt contemplated a trade yet, but if the Devils are going to look ahead to the future, the guys on the north side of 40 dont have to be part of the plans. At the same time, if the Devils are going to move them, anything to upgrade the forward talent in the organization should be a priority. NEW YORK ISLANDERS UFA in 2014: Thomas Vanek, Eric Boulton, Radek Martinek, Andrew MacDonald, Evgeni Nabokov. RFA in 2014: Casey Cizikas, Calvin de Haan, Kevin Poulin. Top Prospects: Ryan Strome, C, Niagara (OHL)Griffin Reinhart, D, Edmonton (WHL)Ville Pokka, D, Karpat (SML)Ryan Pulock, D, Brandon (WHL)Matt Donovan, D, Bridgeport (AHL) Others of Interest: Josh Bailey, Michael Grabner, Matt Carkner, Brian Strait, Anders Lee, Johan Sundstrom, Scott Mayfield, Adam Pelech, Anders Nilsson. No-Trade Clauses: Lubomir Visnovsky. The Plan: The Islanders were already out of the playoff race before C John Tavares suffered a season-ending knee injury at the Olympics, but that makes their next moves all the more important as they try to ice a more competitive club in 2014-2015. Since the Islanders couldnt get LW Thomas Vanek to sign an extension, GM Garth Snow needs to attempt to recoup some of the value he sacrificed in acquiring Vanek from Buffalo early in the season. If D Andrew MacDonald isnt prepared to sign a team-friendly deal (and advanced stats suggest he should), then the Isles might as well deal him and add more assets for the future -- same as it ever was. NEW YORK RANGERS UFA in 2014: Ryan Callahan, Brian Boyle, Benoit Pouliot, Dominic Moore, Daniel Carcillo, Dan Girardi, Anton Stralman, Darroll Powe, Arron Asham. RFA in 2014: Derick Brassard, Mats Zuccarello, Chris Kreider, Justin Falk, John Moore. Top Prospects: J.T. Miller, RW, Hartford (AHL)Danny Kristo, RW, Hartford (AHL)Jesper Fast, RW, Hartford (AHL)Anthony Duclair, LW, Quebec (QMJHL)Dylan McIlrath, D, Hartford (AHL) Others of Interest: Derek Dorsett, Kevin Klein, Pavel Buchnevich. No-Trade Clauses: Rick Nash, Brad Richards. The Plan: The Rangers have gained ground after a slow start and have a team that can contend in the East. While RW Ryan Callahan and D Dan Girardi are notable unrestricted free agents, the Rangers are would have to get roster players in return since a playoff team cant justify dealing prominent players for no immediate help. OTTAWA SENATORS UFA in 2014: Milan Michalek, Matt Kassian, Chris Phillips, Joe Corvo. RFA in 2014: Cory Conacher, Stephane Da Costa, Eric Gryba, Robin Lehner. Top Prospects:Curtis Lazar, C, Edmonton (WHL)Mark Stone, RW, Binghamton (AHL)Matt Puempel, LW, Binghamton (AHL)Shane Prince, LW, Binghamton (AHL)Jean-Gabriel Pageau, C, Binghamton (AHL) Others of Interest: Erik Condra, Colin Greening, Jared Cowen, Patrick Wiercioch, Mark Borowiecki. No-Trade Clauses: Jason Spezza, Clarke MacArthur, Chris Neil (modified), Chris Phillips (limited). The Plan: On the outside looking in at the playoffs, the Senators might have the talent to push for a berth, and while they are open to adding a power forward to play alongside Jason Spezza, it appears that the Senators wouldnt take on significant money in any deal. That shouldnt preclude a rental, but it also may not preclude the Senators selling if they lose a couple coming out of the break. If the Senators are buyers, they have a solid farm team in Binghamton from which they could offer a prospect or two in order to find a winger that can improve their attack. PHILADELPHIA FLYERS UFA in 2014: Steve Downie, Adam Hall, Kimmo Timonen, Andrej Meszaros, Ray Emery. RFA in 2014: Brayden Schenn, Michael Raffl, Erik Gustafsson. Top Prospects: Scott Laughton, C, Oshawa (OHL)Mark Alt, D, Adirondack (AHL)Shayne Gostisbehere, D, Union (ECAC)Samuel Morin, D, Rimouski (QMJHL)Tye McGinn, LW, Adirondack (AHL) Others of Interest: Sean Couturier, Matt Read, Luke Schenn, Nick Cousins, Robert Hagg. No-Trade Clauses: Scott Hartnell, Vincent Lecavalier, Wayne Simmonds (modified), Kimmo Timonen, Braydon Coburn (modified), Nicklas Grossman (modified) The Plan: Like the Rangers, the Flyers are playing much better after a slow start; they have enough talent to make some noise, though blueline improvements wouldnt hurt. Philadelphia made their bed in goal with Steve Mason, and could live to regret it, but signing him to an extension likely precludes a notable change in that spot. PITTSBURGH PENGUINS UFA in 2014: Jussi Jokinen, Taylor Pyatt, Tanner Glass, Chuck Kobasew, Joe Vitale, Chris Conner, Brooks Orpik, Matt Niskanen, Deryk Engelland. RFA in 2014: Brandon Sutter, Jayson Megna. Top Prospects: Derrick Pouliot, D, Portland (WHL)Simon Despres, D, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL)Scott Harrington, D, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL)Brian Dumoulin, D, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL)Brian Gibbons, RW, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (AHL) Others of Interest: Beau Bennett, Brian Gibbons, Robert Bortuzzo, Josh Archibald. No-Trade Clauses: Evgeni Malkin, Sidney Crosby, Pascal Dupuis (limited), Chris Kunitz (modified), Paul Martin (limited), Brooks Orpik (limited), Rob Scuderi (modified). The Plan: For a Stanley Cup contender, the Penguins do have some notable needs. The search for Sidney Crosbys right winger (in the absence of injured Pascal Dupuis) continues and Pittsburgh might want to add immediate help on the blueline as insurance for D Kris Letang, who recently suffered a stroke. Finding a winger to complement Crosby shouldnt be that difficult, but its become bit of meme that Crosby is so difficult to play with. Drop in someone like Matt Moulson and see if he likes pulling the trigger on Crosbys setups. TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING UFA in 2014: Tom Pyatt, Sami Salo, Brian Lee. RFA in 2014: Alex Killorn, J.T. Brown, Tyler Johnson, Ondrej Palat, Keith Aulie, Mark Barberio, Anders Lindback. Top Prospects: Jonathan Drouin, LW, Halifax (QMJHL)Andrey Vasilevskiy, G, Ufa Salavat Yulayev (KHL)Vladislav Namestnikov, C, Syracuse (AHL)Brett Connolly, RW, Syracuse (AHL)Slater Koekkoek, D, Windsor (OHL) Others of Interest: Nate Thompson, B.J. Crombeen, Richard Panik, Adam Erne, Andrej Sustr. The Plan: Tampa Bays big addition will be the return of C Steven Stamkos, but Lightning could go for help on defence if they are looking to capitalize on this season -- its not every year that you get the goaltending they are getting from Ben Bishop. One advantage that the Lightning have is that they have a well-stocked system, cultivated over the past few seasons, so they have some attractive assets to move, including forwards that havent been able to crack the Lightning lineup, if they go looking for immediate help. TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS UFA in 2014: David Bolland, Nikolai Kulemin, Jay McClement, Mason Raymond, Troy Bodie, Trevor Smith, Jerred Smithson, Paul Ranger. RFA in 2014: Peter Holland, Carter Ashton, Cody Franson, Jake Gardiner, James Reimer. Top Prospects:Matthew Finn, D, Guelph (OHL)Stuart Percy, D, Toronto (AHL)Josh Leivo, LW, Toronto (AHL)Andreas Johnson, C, Frolunda (SEL)Frederik Gauthier, C, Rimouski (QMJHL) Others of Interest: Frazer McLaren, Carl Gunnarsson, Tyler Biggs, Jerry DAmigo, Greg McKegg. No-Trade Clauses: Phil Kessel (limited), Joffrey Lupul (limited), David Clarkson (modified), Tyler Bozak (modified), Tim Gleason, Paul Ranger. The Plan: Sitting in a playoff spot after a great run leading up to the break (but also due, in part, to nine shootout wins) the Leafs anticipate getting David Bolland back from injury, and while they are surely happy with the results theyve been getting, the Leafs should never turn down the opportunity to improve their defence. For all the progress the Leafs have made in the standings, their possession numbers havent shown improvement, which means the team, as currently constructed, is going to need continued excellence from G Jonathan Bernier if theyre going to hold their playoff position. WASHINGTON CAPITALS UFA in 2014: Mikhail Grabovski, Tyson Strachan. RFA in 2014: Dmitry Orlov. Top Prospects: Evgeny Kuznetsov, RW, Chelyabinsk Traktor (KHL)Riley Barber, RW, Miami-Ohio (NCHC)Andre Burakovsky, LW, Erie (OHL)Philipp Grubauer, G, Hershey (AHL)Madison Bowey, D, Kelowna (WHL) Others of Interest: Joel Ward, Marcus Johansson, Jason Chimera, Eric Fehr, Jay Beagle, John Erskine, Connor Carrick, Nate Schmidt, Michal Neuvirth. No-Trade Clauses: Brooks Laich (limited), Martin Erat, Troy Brouwer (modified), Mikhail Grabovski, Mike Green (modified). The Plan: The Capitals havent played all that well this year, yet are still in the playoff mix if they can finish strong (thanks, in part, to a league-high 15 shootout results). Basically, they need someone other than Alexander Ovechkin to score and a goaltender that is able to take the reins and that could be enough to get into the postseason, but this isnt a good enough team to mortgage the future, either, so adding a veteran or two at minimal cost may be the plan of attack. * - Contract information comes from the wonderful www.capgeek.com. Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn. Yordano Ventura Royals Jersey .ca. @kfraserthecall do you think reducing carcillo suspension was right?? I sure dont agree with bettman!! — david grosnick (@dgrosni) June 3, 2014 David:As a man that wears the "stripes" yourself, I am certain you endorse the following statement contained in the Leagues press release following Commissioner Bettmans ruling on the Daniel Carcillo appeal: "The National Hockey League does not and will not, under any circumstances, tolerate or condone the abuse, physical or otherwise, of our on-ice officials. The strict and proper enforcement of Rule 40, therefore, plays a critical role in safeguarding the integrity of the game by maintaining a safe and respectful working environment for our officials." From that release I point to the phrase, "The strict and proper enforcement of Rule 40" as a foundation in rendering a fair verdict in this matter. As such, I personally agree with the Commissioners thoughtful and well laid out decision to revise the initial rule application and relative category that was determined by the game officials from 40.3 (Category ll, not less than ten games) to 40.4 (Category lll not less than three games). For the complete Commissioners opinion, please click here. I maintained a public position from the outset of this incident that a violation under the definition of rule 40.4 (Category lll) had been committed by Daniel Carcillo as he attempted to free himself from the grasp of Linesman Scott Driscoll in an emotionally charged moment. Through the testimony provided by all parties at the appeal hearing the following statement from the Commissioners opinion is most pertinent to his final determination: "Here, Messrs. Carcillo and Driscoll, as well as the NHLPA, agree that he Players application of physical force was solely for the purpose of getting free of Linesman Driscoll. That conclusion is supported by my review of the video footage and by the fact that there was no history of bad blood that would suggest that the Player bore any personal animus against the Linesman that might motivate his actions. I thus conclude that the application of physical force was "solely for the purpose of getting free" of the Official." The agreement by Driscoll in this statement, with regard to Carcillos "purpose", is an important admission of fact in the appeal process and to derail any potential ill feelings from the officiating fraternity that they are not adequately being protected by the League. This, coupled with the fact that Commissioner Bettman recognized Carcillos actions were not "accidental" and more serious than a "push or shove" to properly calibrate Carcillos suspension to six games should satisfy all parties and maintain the strict and proper enforcement of rule 40. By revising this offence to Category lll the suspension could have ranged from three to nine games. With everything taken into account, I support the Commissioners decision to reduce the initial 10-game suspension of Daniel Carcillo to a meaningful six games under the revised category. The fifth-seeded Canadian cruised through the quarter-final after scraping out a victory a day earlier. It will be his fourth semifinal of the season after Rome, Wimbledon and Washington, where he won his sixth career title. "I felt good after yesterday, where I struggled for two-and-a-half sets with return," said Raonic. "I did better today, it felt good. Even last week at the Rogers Cup I returned poorly. Its good to get better now as the event goes along." The 23-year-old Canadian remains the only player this season to reach at least six quarter-finals at the Masters 1000 level. The only one he missed out on was in Madrid, where he lost in the third round to Kei Nishikori. Raonic will play five-time champion Roger Federer of Switzerland on Saturday. In doubles play, Wimbledon champions Vasek Vasek Pospisil of Vancouver and American Jack Sock reached the semifinals with a 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 win over Aleexander Peya of Austria and Bruno Soares of Brazil. Bo Jackson Jersey. Peya and Soares won the doubles title last week at the Rogers Cup in Toronto. Pospisil and Sock have now won a record 13 straight matches since first playing together at Wimbledon. They topped the previous mark of 12 set by Paul Annacone and Christo van Rensburg in 1984-85. Raonic was completely untroubled by the 15th-seeded Fognini, breaking him six times and saving all seven break points against his own serve. The Canadian had seven aces and took the victory when Fognini hit two straight double-faults. "I had to do a lot of things well today, hes very unpredictable," Raonic said of the quirky Italian. "I tried top take advantage of his little slumps. "You have to focus on yourself and make sure you do your things," he added. "You cant make predictions with him. I broke handily most of time but I was scraping out a lot of service games." Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., remains solidly in the chase for a place in the eight-man season final in London. He currently stands a provisional seventh in the points race. Cheap NFL JerseysWholesale JerseysWholesale NFL JerseysJerseys From ChinaWholesale NFL JerseysCheap NFL JerseysCheap Jerseys ' ' '
Will Greenwood said Englands recent injuries are an unfortunate coincidence, and backed the intensity of Eddie Jones camps. Gary Payton Jersey . The former England player was on Sky Sports News HQ to discuss the national sides current injury concerns, with Jones under pressure from Premiership clubs after several stars were sidelined following high-intensity training sessions.Wasps Sam Jones broke his right leg and suffered ankle damage during a judo session, with the flanker ruled out for five months, while Bath winger Anthony Watson sustained a broken jaw during a training session last Tuesday. Most recently, Exeter claimed that England told them Jack Nowell only had a minor injury but a subsequent scan revealed a nine-to-10 centimetre tear in his thigh. In the wake of criticism from club bosses, Jones has agreed to a meeting with the 12 Premiership teams to discuss player welfare. Australia coach Michael Cheika defended Eddie Jones training methods following the news of Sam Jones broken leg Will Greenwood says he sympathises with the clubs, but believes the injuries are part of the game, and that Englands recent luckless run is an unfortunate coincidence rather than the fault of the England coaching staff.Ive seen it up close and personal, said the Sky Sports pundit.Theyre not long sessions, theyre not being flogged, theyre not kept out on a field on their feet for hours and hours, but [Jones] wants to replicate Test-match intensity - as close to that as possible - within training camps.Which is exactly what Clive Woodward used to do; make the training so unbelievably hard that when you land on a Saturday... youre accustomed to that heart rate spiking, that physical and mental pressure being applied. Watch NOW TV Watch Sky Sports for just ?£6.99. No contract. Now, [Jones] has been in charge for a year, there have been some injuries in previous camps, but I think what happens is everything is focused on it when you hear a broken jaw, a broken leg, a torn quad.I believe its an unfortunate coincidence of an accumulation of players being crocked at the same time.Greenwood says communication between the RFU and the Premiership is better today than its ever been, and urged all involved to maintain that relationship in order for England to compete with the All Blacks at the top of world rugby.I think the relationship between the Rugby Football Union and the English clubs, the Premiership, has grown fantastically well over the past four or five years, said Greenwood. Sean Fitzpatrick thinks the current New Zealand team is the best ever Its allowed the club sides to develop with a huge amount of financial support from the governing body, and with that support they buy the right to get access to the players.Which is critical if you have got any chance of keeping up with New Zealand and the southern hemisphere sides. Weve overtaken two or three - were No 2 in the world - but New Zealand are like a club side, they spend so much time together. The positions they play for in their provinces is dictated from up on high, so they have real control over the players. We have a position where players are riding two horses throughout the whole season, theyve got their club colours and theyve got their international colours. So I think its really important that these training sessions do take place, that Eddie Jones gets a little bit more time with the players. The last Test matches these guys played would have been in June, a fantastic tour of Australia where we won three-nil, but the next Test match after that is November the 12th. The All Blacks, the defending World Series champions, won their third tournament this season in style, running four tries past England to claim their 11th Cup championship in Hong Kong and first since 2011.ATLANTA - With an ice pack wrapped around his injured lower back, a frustrated Jonas Valanciunas spoke to the media having just watched his teams second straight loss from the visitors locker room, unable to influence the final result. After missing 20 games as a rookie a year ago, Valanciunas - like the Raptors as a whole - has been fortunate to be in good health this season. As he spoke about it, the Raptors sophomore centre scanned the room for wood to knock on. "It is disappointing because we lost today so thats the worst part of the day," said Valanciunas, who left Tuesdays game with a lower-back sprain in the third quarter, missing the rest of Torontos 118-113 overtime defeat at the hands of the Hawks. "Everyone wants to win and do something to help us win but I couldnt do anything sitting back here." With Valanciunas unavailable and Patrick Patterson missing his sixth straight game with an elbow injury, the Raptors found themselves as far outside their comfort zone as theyve been in months. Dwane Casey was forced to mix and match several different combinations of Amir Johnson, Chuck Hayes, Steve Novak and Tyler Hansbrough in the frontcourt while cycling through various unorthodox lineups to spark an underperforming second unit. All the while, Atlanta - winners of five straight after losing 14 of 15 - did them no favours. Following Sundays loss to the Suns, Casey was confident his team would not have to face the level of speed and quickness they saw that afternoon. Two days later, Jeff Teague had something to say about that. "He lived in the paint tonight," Kyle Lowry said of Teague, who matched his career-high with 34 points, hitting 11 of his 18 shots, all but six of them taken in the paint. "He got layups and free throws. You have a quick guy like that its hard for the bigs to try and help me and its hard for me to try to figure out where hes going. We tried to change our coverage a little and it worked but he lived in the paint too much tonight." "Its my fault," Lowry said, taking responsibility for his counterpart. But it wasnt, not entirely. "Its a speed league," he acknowledged. Its not the Raptors strength but theres too many up-tempo teams, too many quick players to allow it to be such a glaring weakness. Like Phoenix on the weekend, the Hawks burnt Toronto with speed, playing at a pace that the Raptors could not catch up with, especially with two key defensive players out of the lineup. Toronto tried blitzing Teague, they tried trapping him and switching and pick and rolls. More often than not tthe Hawks point guard blew by the coverage. Shawn Kemp Jersey. . He ran an effective two-man game with all-star Paul Millsap - who recorded his first career triple-double - and found open shooters. The Hawks hit 11 three-pointers, their seventh straight game with 10 or more. "We were trying to take away their threes," said DeMar DeRozan, who had 29 points to go along with 10 rebounds and six assists. "We did a good job to start out the game but we got out of place, missed some rotations and they started knocking down threes. They got confident with it and they kept knocking them down." "They make you change your coverages a little bit with the way they space the floor," added Lowry after a 20-point, nine-assist night. "But we had a decent chance to win that game." Late-game execution failed the Raptors - now 1-5 in overtime this season - once again. They turned the ball over eight times in the fourth quarter and overtime, also committing 16 fouls and giving up seven offensive rebounds. "I just thought we were casual with the basketball," said Casey, his team dropping back-to-back games for the first time since the West Coast trip in early February. "[We] had a lot of opportunities to attack and were casual and soft with our passes and they took advantage of it." The Raptors got off to a strong start, holding Atlanta to 17 points on 25 per cent shooting, including 2-for-9 from long distance in the first quarter. The momentum turned immediately as the second quarter began and the Raptors depleted bench came into the game. Without Patterson, Torontos second unit - outscored 59-11 on Sunday and 20-11 in the first half Tuesday - lacks spacing and movement on the offensive end and foot speed defensively. Then, late in the third quarter, the Raptors lost Valanciunas. The seven-footer felt his back tighten up as he turned to set a screen. "I stopped and hyperextended my back," he said. "I cant tell much about it. I just felt pain and that was it." Valanciunas, who hasnt dealt with back issues in the past, wanted to continue playing but the teams medical staff pulled him prior to the fourth quarter. For the third straight game the sophomore centre got off to a hot start, scoring 11 points and grabbing four boards in the opening frame. "I thought he had something good going, a match inside," Casey said. "He was attacking the rim, attacking the basket, he was giving us some rim protection and rebounding." Valanciunas will be re-evaluated in New Orleans ahead of Wednesdays game against the Pelicans. Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork. Divock Origi Jersey .com) - Jimmy Walker ran away with his fourth career PGA Tour victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii Sunday, a win that has vaulted him up to No. 13 in the world rankings. Walker, whose 9-shot victory was the largest in Sony Open history by two shots, jumped four spots from No. 17 to No. 13 this week. Rory McIlroy remained the No. 1 player in the world for another week and he was followed by Henrik Stenson, Adam Scott and Bubba Watson at Nos. 2-4 again. Justin Rose and Sergio Garcia traded spots, with Rose up one to No. 5 and Garcia falling one to No. 6. Jim Furyk, Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler remained the same and they are Nos. 7-10. Matt Kuchar stayed put at No. 11, as did Martin Kaymer at No. 12 after he lost a 10-stroke lead at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship on Sunday. With Walker up four spots, Billy Horschel and Patrick Reed both fell one, putting them at Nos. 14 and 15, respectively. Phil Mickelson remained at 16, Victor Dubuisson jumped two to 17, Hideki Matsuyama fell three to 18, Graeme McDowell dropped one to 19 and Zach Johnson stayed at 20 for another week. RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Carolina Hurricanes hope they now have the leadership tandem in place to turn the franchise around. Bill Peters was introduced Friday as the Hurricanes new coach, the first big hire made by new Carolina general manager Ron Francis. Now its up to Peters to prove it was a shrewd move. Carolina has made three coaching changes since 2006 and has only one playoff appearance to show for it. "When I did my due diligence and went to look at rosters ... were not far off," Peters said. "I think theres lots of pieces here and its up to us and our coaching staff ... to max our group out." A few hours after Peters formal introduction, the Hurricanes made another addition to their management team, hiring 44-year-old Ricky Olczyk -- the younger brother of former NHL coach and current NBC Sports analyst Ed Olczyk -- as an assistant general manager. The younger Olczyk spent six years as Edmontons assistant GM and was the Oilers NHL liaison for all collective bargaining agreement matters. Peters replaces Kirk Muller, who was fired last month -- a week into Francis tenure as GM -- and went 80-80-27 in three seasons with no playoff berths. Instead of an established NHL head coach or a popular ex-player, Francis went with Peters -- a 48-year-old Detroit Red Wings assistant who has never been an NHL head coach but was in demand this off-season. Peters said he interviewed for two other jobs and Francis says he spoke to 10 candidates during "a pretty extensive search," narrowing that to a three-man short list before deciding on Peters and giving him a three-year contract. "You have to take the time to go through it and make sure you get the right guy," Francis said, "and thats what we did." What dazzled Francis was Peters attention to detail: He penned a booklet breaking down the team and brought it to his first interview with them, and his second one included a PowerPoint presentation, Francis said. "Hes extremely, extremely detailed," Francis said. "Hes going to communicate with our players. Our players are going to know where he stands, and theres no little detail that (will) be overloooked. Emre Can Jersey. " From the outside, his challenge looks daunting: Making the Hurricanes a consistent playoff team. Muller couldnt do it in three years. Neither could Paul Maurice, at least during his second stint with the team. Even Peter Laviolette -- the only Carolina coach to hoist the Stanley Cup -- couldnt get the Hurricanes back to the post-season. Now Peters gets his chance to try to revive a club that has missed the playoffs in seven of the eight years since the Hurricanes won their only Stanley Cup in 2006. The lone post-season berth since that Cup run came in 2009, when the Hurricanes reached the Eastern Conference final in the first year of Maurices second term as coach. Peters plan is to address three glaring problems from last season: Starting games strong, producing more on the power play and winning more often at PNC Arena. Carolina was the leagues third-worst team with the man advantage and was just 18-17-6 at home. "Weve got to become a harder team to play against here in Raleigh," Peters said. His hiring caps about two months of turbulence in the Hurricanes organization. Francis, a Hall of Fame player who has been both an assistant coach and an assistant GM with Carolina, was moved up a rung on the organizations ladder and his mentor, Jim Rutherford, stepped aside after two decades -- and eventually wound up bolting to Pittsburgh to take over as the Penguins GM. Francis first big move came a week later when he fired Muller and put the players on notice that the responsibility for turning the team around is on them, too. After a 46-day search in which some recognizable names were floated, Francis plucked Peters from Mike Babcocks staff with the Red Wings. He spent the past three years working primarily with the Red Wings defencemen and penalty killers. Before joining the Red Wings staff, he coached Rockford of the AHL from 2008-11 and guiding that team to consecutive 40-win seasons. Eight of his Rockford players helped Chicago win the Cup in either 2010 or 2013, and he also coached Spokane (Washington) of the Western Hockey League for three seasons. "This is a guy that knows coaching," Francis said. Cheap NFL JerseysWholesale JerseysWholesale NFL JerseysJerseys From ChinaWholesale NFL JerseysCheap NFL JerseysCheap Jerseys ' ' '
CALGARY -- An ugly goal for the Calgary Flames and goaltender Reto Berra was a thing of beauty for the desperate Edmonton Oilers. Walt Frazier Jersey . From near the corner and below the goal line, David Perron flung the puck towards the net, banking it off Berras shoulder and in for the go-ahead goal as Edmonton snapped a five-game losing streak Saturday night with a 4-2 come-from-behind victory over the Calgary Flames. Boyd Gordon capped the scoring into an empty net as the Oilers stormed back with four unanswered goals in the third period to steal the first of five meetings between the provincial rivals. "Id be kidding if I said I knew I would score but I saw a little bit of room, I put it there and it was in the net so it felt good," said Perron. Just over two minutes earlier, the Oilers tied the game 2-2 on another strange one. Sam Gagners shot deflected off Flames defenceman Dennis Wideman and fluttered high in the air. While Berra couldnt find it, Ales Hemsky batted it in from out of mid-air for his first goal in 12 games. Edmonton started its comeback at 3:41 when Jordan Eberle, who was uncovered in the slot, took a drop pass from Taylor Hall and ripped a shot over Berras blocker. The three-goal barrage happened in a span of 6:42 and came on four shots. "We gave them two goals out of three," said Flames coach Bob Hartley, visibly unhappy. "After 40 minutes, I felt that we gave them nothing. We were playing our style. Then, their first goal and third goal, theres only one word for those two goals - awful." Edmonton (5-15-2), which began the night in last place in the NHL, won for just the second time in its last 12 (2-9-1). Sean Monahan and Wideman scored for Calgary (6-11-3). The Flames are winless in their last six, and are 0-4-1 in their last five games at the Scotiabank Saddledome. "We have a lot of pressure on us from our team itself, from the organization, from the fans, they expect us to win and when youre not winning, it kills the confidence on your team," said Eberle. "You start making plays that youre not used to making, you start squeezing the stick and you start not playing as a team." Eberle himself had been in a lengthy slump with just one goal in his previous 12 games. "Momentum is a huge thing in this game. When things arent going, you sometimes get pissed off and try to do things yourself and thats when things start breaking down even more," said Eberle. "So when you finally get rewarded and get some confidence, were going to use that." Oilers coach Dallas Eakins says the smallest of things can turn around a teams fortunes and he hopes this result will provide that boost for his team. He used Philadelphias recent 3-0-1 run as an example. "We were in a close game with them. We end up losing the game, they had been on the down and out and it seemed like every time I look at the scoreboard lately, theyve been winning," Eakins said. "When you get that winning feeling again, its contagious. Just like when you have that losing feeling, its contagious too." The first of five meetings between the provincial rivals featured the teams ranked 13th and 14th in the Western Conference. The Flames remain three points up on Oilers, although they are 12 points back of a playoff spot. "Great start. In the first two periods, I thought we were the better team. Then, in 10 or 12 minutes, we lost the game, so thats really disappointing and nobody in this locker-room can be happy," said former Oilers defenceman Ladislav Smid. "We have to learn how to finish those kind of games. We knew they have lots of talent over there. We should have just played the same game for 60 minutes, no matter what happened." Devan Dubnyk had a great night for the Oilers making 33 saves to improve to 4-10-1. It comes on the same night that newly signed Ilya Bryzgalov picked up a win in his second AHL conditioning start, allowing only one goal in Oklahoma Citys 4-1 victory over Abbotsford. Making his sixth start in the last seven games, Berra had 19 saves to fall to 1-4-1. Calgary took a 2-0 lead at 17:08 of the second period on a rocket off the stick of Wideman. Dubnyk never saw it as he was screened on the play by Lee Stempniak. Sean Monahan gave the Flames a 1-0 lead at 12:23. It was the first goal in seven games for Calgarys 2013 first round draft pick and just his second in the last 12 after he started the season with six in his first eight. It also marked the first time Calgary held a lead after the first period in three weeks. In the previous eight games, the Flames had been outscored 11-1 in the opening 20 minutes. The game began with a throwback to the old days of the Battle of Alberta as heavyweights Brian McGrattan and Luke Gazdic squared off in a lengthy fight that fired up the crowd. Notes: Healthy scratches for Calgary were RW Tim Jackman and D Sean OBrien... LW Ryan Jones was not in the line-up for Edmonton... After several years of Calgary domination, Edmonton has won five of the last seven games between the two teams ... Flames LW TJ Galiardi hasnt scored in his last 18 games. Also slumping is D TJ Brodie, who has no points in his last eight games... For Edmonton, Nugent-Hopkins has one goal in his last 13 games. Carmelo Anthony Jersey . HEROES Brad Richards – The Blackhawks centre had a pair of assists against Dallas, in his 1,000th career NHL game. After a slow start this season (three points in the first nine games), Richards now has eight points (3 G, 5 A) in the past nine games and is in a favourable situation on a line with Patrick Kane and Kris Versteeg. Blue Jackets’ top line – LW Nick Foligno scored two goals and an assist in a 4-3 win at Philadelphia Friday. It gives Foligno nine points (6 G, 3 A) in his past seven games and he’s played more than 20 minutes in three of the past four games, including a season-high 22:30 Friday. C Ryan Johansen assisted on all four Columbus goals in the win, and now has 20 points (6 G, 14 A) in 17 games. Nick Bjugstad – The second-year centre has been snakebitten, managing three points in 14 games to start the season, but he broke through Sunday at Anaheim, with two goals and two assists. Bjugstad has solid possession stats this season (53.3% Corsi), but has a spectacularly low on-ice shooting percentage, which indicates that, even on the offensively-challenged Panthers, he’s due for better finishing. Peter Holland, Mike Santorelli, Leo Komarov – A relatively steady influence for Toronto lately, the trio had a rough game against Pittsburgh Friday when tasked with covering Chris Kunitz, Sidney Crosby and Pascal Dupuis; Holland had the worst possession stats (6 shot attempts for, 26 against, 18.8%) on the night. Kyle Brodziak – In 8:55 ice time against Dallas Saturday, the Wild centre was on the ice for three shot attempts for and 21 against (12.5%). LEOPOLD TRADE Jordan Leopold – The veteran defenceman, who is joining his seventh NHL team, played 17:11 against San Jose Saturday in his Columbus debut. Leopold, 34, was limited to 27 games by injuries last season and has been a spare part in St. Louis this year but, prior to that, he had been averaging more than 20 minutes per game for four straight seasons. The trigger for the Blue Jackets needing Leopold was Fedor Tyutin suffering a knee injury that will keep him out 4-6 weeks. Chris Butler – Called up to fill the seventh defence spot in St. Louis now that Leopold is gone. Butler has produced some of the worst possession numbers over the past three seasons, but the St. Louis native may be okay in a limited role on a strong Blues team. LINEUP NEED TO KNOW Taylor Hall – Edmonton’s star left winger returned to the lineup Sunday, scoring a goal, with 12 shot attempts (5 SOG) in a 2-1 loss to Arizona. Sergei Bobrovsky – The Blue Jackets’ No. 1 goaltender returned to action against the Sharks Saturday, stopping 36 of 37 shots in a 2-1 Columbus win. Zach Parise – Minnesota left winger scored a pair of goals Sunday against Winnipeg in his return to the Wild lineup. Jonathan Drouin – Tampa Bay’s rookie winger was a healthy scratch against the Islanders Saturday. He has four points in the past five games, but is the victim of a numbers game in Tampa Bay, where they have a lot of skilled young forwards. Matt Nieto – After getting hit hard late against Buffalo Friday, the Sharks winger did not dress Sunday. Adam Larsson – The New Jersey defenceman played a season-high 20:28 at Washington Friday. Tyson Strachan – The journeyman defender played 22:54 against Toronto Saturday, the third time in four games that he’s logged more than 20 minutes. Jakub Kindl – The Red Wings defenceman played a season-low 9:13 against Chicago Friday, then was a healthy scratch Sunday against Montreal, replaced in the lineup by Brian Lashoff. Dwight King – The Kings left winger was a healthy scratch Saturday against Anaheim. Trevor van Riemsdyk – Chicago’s rookie defenceman suffered a serious leg injury Sunday, possibly presenting another opportunity for David Rundblad to get regular reps on the Blackhawks blueline. Boone Jenner – The second-year Blue Jackets’ forward is playing a lot more (19:27 per game) and has five points in six games since coming back from injury. NEW YORK -- Obtained by the Yankees from Arizona in separate July trades, Brandon McCarthy and Martin Prado are doing their best to keep alive New Yorks slim playoff hopes. Francisco Lindor Jersey . McCarthy won for the second time in six starts and Prado had three hits as the Yankees feasted on Kansas Citys bullpen in a 6-2 win Saturday after Royals starter Danny Duffy left because of an injury following his first pitch. McCarthy, dealt on July 6, allowed two runs and six hits in 6 2-3 innings with four strikeouts and a walk. He is 6-4 with a 2.87 ERA for the Yankees after going 3-10 with a 5.01 ERA in 18 starts for the Diamondbacks. "Its nice just to contribute," he said. "I spent the first half of the season being a hindrance on an organization, and thats something that doesnt sit well. So to come somewhere where theres a playoff race going on, and youre a positive influence on something thats helping the team win, thats really all you can ask for." Prado, acquired on July 31, played for the first time since straining his left hamstring Tuesday and had three hits, raising his average to .309 with the Yankees. He hit .270 with the Diamondbacks. Prados 10th multihit effort in his last 16 games fueled a rare offensive outburst by the weak-hitting Yankees, who scored as many as six runs for the first time since Aug. 29. A night earlier, a 1-0 loss in the series opener dropped them 4 1/2 games back for the ALs second wild card. "Hitting is contagious, I believe," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It just picks your club up Its uplifting. The last 20 games, hes been unbelievable." The Yankees scored all their runs in the first five innings off Liam Hendriks and Casey Coleman, called on because of Duffys sore left shoulder. Prado doubled off Hendriks (1-1) with two outs in the first and gave his hamstring a test when he came around on Mark Teixeiras single. "I was like, please, just let me get to home plate," Prado said. Prado said he is playing at less than 100 per cent but wants to be in the lineup as the Yankees try to avoid missing the playoffs in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1992 and 93. "Im trying to be smart," Prado said. "I want to be in there for my teammates." After Alex Gordons RBI bloop single tied the score in the third, the Yankees went ahead for good in the bottom half on Jacoby Ellsburys run-scoring triple and Derek Jeters sacrifice fly. Chase Headley make it 4-1 in the fourth when he scored from third after Perez overthrew third base for an error on a pickoff attempt. Carlos Beltran doubled in a run in the fifth and scored on a single by pinch-hitter Ichiro Suzuki. Mike Moustakas had a sacrifice fly in the seventh, ending McCarthys day, but Shawn Kelley, Dellin Betances and David Robertson combined for hitless relief. New York relievers have thrown 11 innings of scoreless, three-hit relief in their last four games with 14 strikeouts and no walks. "Just a good team game," McCarthy said. Kansas City (78-62) remained two games ahead of Detroit in the AL Central, but the Royals were far more concerned with the state of Duffys left shoulder. Duffy, who returned in August 2013 following elbow ligament-replacement surgery, entered the day with a 2.44 ERA, third-best in the AL. "We will send him home tomorrow and get an MRI to see what we are dealing with," Royals manager Ned Yost said. Kansas City scored four runs or fewer for the eighth straight game -- including a suspended game against Cleveland on Aug. 31 that will resume on Sept. 22. But the Royals are 4-3 in that span thanks to their pitching. "We will get a hit here and there, but not really consistent all-around," Gordon said. "We just need to get more consistent and have some big innings." TRAINERS ROOM Royals: RHP Greg Holland was missed his second straight game due to a tight right triceps. "Hopefully a day or two or three recovery and be ready to go," Yost said. ... DH Josh Willingham returned Saturday after missing six games because of a sore back and went 1 for 4. Yankees: RHP Masahiro Tanaka threw a 34-pitch bullpen session. Girardi said the club needs to see Tanaka pitch in a game this season to know whether he can pitch without surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow. ... C Francisco Cervelli missed the game because of a migraine. ... OF Brett Gardner didnt play after aggravating an abdominal injury Friday. Girardi said he was questionable at best for Sunday. UP NEXT Yankees RHP Shane Greene (4-2) opposes Royals RHP Yordano Ventura (11-9) in the series finale after a pregame ceremony on Derek Jeter Day. BETANCES MOVING ON UP: Betances threw a perfect eighth inning with one strikeout, his 125th of the season. Thats the second-most in team history for a reliever, three strikeouts ahead of Rich Gossage in 1978 and five shy of Mariano Rivera in 1996. "Look at the names -- one Hall of Famer and one just waiting four more years," Girardi said. "Thats how dominant he has been this year, and how good he has been." THE M&M BOYS: McCarthy credited catcher John Ryan Murphy -- whom hed never thrown to before Saturday -- for helping him labour through a 105-pitch effort on a humid 89-degree afternoon. "Wasnt really sharp, but I felt like Murphy did a good job getting me through it and making sure we could kind of keep going deeper into the game and make those runs that they gave me early hold up," McCarthy said. "Just kind of one of those days where youre working for everything you get. Nothing really comes easy." ELLSBURY DOES IT ALL: Ellsbury went 1 for 4 and is hitting .359 with 13 RBIs in his last 18 games. Ellsbury also saved at least two hits in centre: He ran down a potential RBI extra-base hit by Josh Willingham in the gap in the fourth and caught Gordons sinking liner in the eighth. "Hes a tremendous centre fielder," Girardi said. "As good as it gets." Austin Jackson Jersey .com) - Chris Kreider tallied a goal and an assist as the New York Rangers capped a successful California road trip with a 3-1 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday. Tyler Naquin Jersey . It was the first game back in Columbus for Rangers star Rick Nash, the Blue Jackets franchise leader in goals, assists and games. He was given a standing ovation during a video tribute in the first period, but was booed loud and long after a second-period, two-handed shove up high on Columbus goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. http://www.authenticbaseshopindians.com/authentic-larry-doby-indians-jersey/ .ca. In addition to the game being aired in its entirety on CTV Two Vancouver Island and TSN.ca, TSN2 will also have coverage of Whitecaps FC immediately following NASCAR Sprint Cup Series: Toyota Owners 400.MONTREAL - The Montreal Impacts rebuilding program took more steps Tuesday with the arrival in camp of Belgian defender Laurent Ciman and a major trade with the New York Red Bulls. The Impact sent popular midfielder Felipe to the Red Bulls for left back Ambroise Oyongo and veteran midfielder Eric Alexander. The trade completes a near-total remake of the back line for a team that allowed 58 goals last season, third worst in Major League Soccer. We feel its in our favour, that we improved the squad, Adam Braz said after his first deal since he was named the Impacts technical director on Nov. 24. They wanted Felipe and they gave up a lot to get him.The Impact should begin the campaign with a back line of returning Frenchman Hassoun Camara at right back, Ciman and newcomer Bakery Soumare in the middle and Cameroon international Oyongo on the left side. The whole back line speaks French now, so theres no reason they cant communicate with each other, quipped coach Frank Klopas.Later Tuesday, Montreal acquired Ghanaian winger/forward Dominic Oduro from Toronto FC in return for allocation money.Montreal also got allocation money and an international roster spot in the New York deal while the Red Bulls got the top spot in the allocation order, which may be the key to the deal. It gives the team who holds it first dibs on any U.S. national team player who wants to return to MLS from an overseas league. The league website mlssoccer.com reported New York may be interested in midfielder Sasha Kljestan, currently playing for Anderlecht in Belgium. Kljestan was once a teammate of Red Bulls coach Jesse Marsch. It was Marsch who brought Felipe to Montreal for its expansion season in 2012. The 24-year-old became a workhorse for the Impact, scoring 12 goals and adding 24 assists in 93 games over three campaigns. There was speculation Felipe may be traded because of a glut of attacking midfielders. There was also concern from some that he had not progressed since his rookie year, which made the Brazilian bristle. You check my statistics: the past two years I did almost the same from my first year, said Felipe. Which player played more minutes than me? (none). Which player had more passes than me? Who creates more than me?Even birds can talk but,, in the end, its what you did (that counts). Bob Feller Jersey. . Im leaving with my head up because I know I did everything I could for this club.Left back was a revolving door for Montreal after Jeb Brovsky was traded early last season and the Impact hope to have fixed that with Oyongo, backed up by former Chivas USA back Donny Toia. Oyongo is currently playing in the African Cup of Nations, where he scored against Mali on Jan. 20.Hes a tremendous young talent, attack minded, a lot of pace and technical ability, Klopas said of 23-year-old Oyongo, who played 13 games as a rookie for New York last season. He gets forward.Thats the kind of player we were looking for on that side with the way we want to play. Some European clubs have shown interest in Oyongo, so he may draw a tidy transfer fee sometime in the future, Klopas added. The surprise was landing Alexander, a 26-year-old American who started 60 of 68 games over the last two seasons, scoring six goals. In Montreal, he will compete for playing time with designated player Ignacio Piatti, Andres Romero, Justin Mapp and Dilly Duka. The New Jersey Devils signed unrestricted free-agent forward Mike Cammalleri to a contract reportedly worth $25 million over five years and signed forward Martin Havlat to a one-year, $1. Michal Rozsival Jersey .5 million contract. Cammalleri spent the past two-and-a-half seasons with the Calgary Flames with prior stints in Los Angeles and Montreal. He is coming off a five-year contract that paid him an average annual value of $5 million. In 63 games with the Flames in 2013-14, Cammalleri scored 26 goals and 19 assists. The 32-year-old forward has 236 goals and 266 assists for 502 points over 669 career games in the NHL. Cammalleri, a native of Richmond Hill, Ont. was drafted in the second round (49th overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. As for Havlat, the San Jose Sharks bought out the remaining year of the veteran forwards contract last week which had an average annual value of $5 million. He then became an unrestricted free-agent. Havlat scored 12 goals and added 10 assists with a plus-14 rating in 48 games with the Sharks this season. He played one game in the playoffs, but failed to record a point. Havlat signed a six-year, $30 million with the Minnesota Wild prior to the 2009-2010 season and was later traded to San Jose in 2011. In 748 games with the Sharks, Wild, Chicago Blackhawks and Ottawa Senators the 33-year-old has 236 goals and 343 assists for 579 points. The native of Czech Republic was drafted in the first round (26th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. The Devils also signed forward Steve Bernier to a one-year deal worth $600,000 and re-signed Stephen Gionta to a two-year contract. The Republic of Ireland international had to be substituted at half-time during the 4-0 defeat at Manchester City on Saturday, prompting fears that he could miss Euro 2016 in France this summer.Sky sources understand that Givens injury is not serious, though, and it was merely a reaction to playing two matches in a week following on from the 4-0 home defeat to Tottenham on Monday. The Canadian Curling Association will take over sole operation and decision-making for future editions of the World Financial Group Continental Cup. Serge Savard Jersey . The curling version of golfs Ryder Cup was formerly a joint collaboration between the CCA, World Curling Federation and USA Curling. But following the 2014 WFG Continental Cup, which is scheduled for January at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, the CCA will take control of the event. "Weve had a positive working relationship with the WCF and USA Curling since the WFG Continental Cup debuted in 2002 in Regina, but we felt that to continue building on the momentum that will be generated from the Las Vegas event, it was important that the CCA take a strong role in determining future directions for the WFG Continental Cup," said CCA Chief Executive Officer Greg Stremlaw. "Weve always believed this event has huge potential for attracting new curling fans, and were excited about what we can do to take it to new levels in the future." Among the changes for future editions of the WFG Continental Cup will be increased Canadian content. Traditionally, the event pitted a North American side against teams from the rest of the world, with four Canadian (two mens, two womens) teams combining with two U.S.-based teams (one mens, one womens) to form Team North America. Instead, effective at the 2015 WFG Continental Cup, Jan. 8-11 in Calgary, the event will feature an all-Canadian entry (three mens, three womens teams). The Canadian teams will consist of the 2013 Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings Canadian Curling Trials mens and womens champions Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg; the 2014 Tim Hortons Brier and Scotties Tournament of Hearts champions; and the 2014 Canada Cup mens and womens champions (to be decided Dec. 3-7 in Camrose, Alta.). In alternating years, Canada will take on Team Europe (2015, 2017) and Team World (2016, 2018), consisting of teams from the U.S. and other non-European curling nations. "Having more Canadian teams involved is always a good thing," said Stremlaw. "It will also mean more rivalries and more excitement as other countries join forces in hopes of taking down the worlds most accomplished curling nation." Nine previous Continental Cups have been staged, with Team North America prevailing five times, including the most recent edition last January in Penticton, B.C. The first five Continental Cups featured North American teams playing European teams; Asian teams were added to the mix in 2008 at Camrose, Alta., and the Team North America vs. Team World format was adopted. The WFG Continental Cup features a variety of curling competitions, including traditional team games, skins, mixed doubles and singles. Record crowds are already guaranteed for the Las Vegas event, said Stremlaw, and future visits to the U.S. for the Continental Cup are very likely. "Were thrilled with the response to our first WFG Continental Cup staged outside of Canada," he said. "Well continue to look for new opportunities such as this one to build not only the event, but the sport of curling and showcase it in unique ways." Ken Dryden Jersey . The NFL announced Friday that the Texans sixth-year veteran offensive lineman will replace Philadelphia Eagles tackle Jason Peters in the Jan. http://www.hockeycanadiensauthority.com/dickie-moore-canadiens-jersey-c-32/ . - Dolphins safety Louis Delmas has been carted off the field with a right knee injury against the Ravens. The Day in 100 Words or Less It was another delicious day at the World Cup. The trends continued, and oh boy please let them continue on and on: Space in zone 14 for number 10s to exploit, clinical counter attacks, high defensive lines, poor defending, surprise results and lots and lots of goals. International football desperately needs a really good World Cup. At the moment it is providing a really great one. England 1-2 Italy - What a wonderful game of football. - Great teams can exploit an opponents weakness and Cesare Prandellis men did exactly that by working many of their attacks down the right. Matteo Darmian and Antonio Candreva tore England to shreds on that flank. Yes, Leighton Baines looked very average on a big stage but he wasnt helped. - Wayne Rooney, asked to play the left side of a three inside a 4-2-3-1, struggled terribly defending his flank. Roy Hodgson felt he did very well but if that was the case what was the reason for switching him to the right at the start of the second half? - Rooney will become the scapegoat the English press need to feast on but for a supposed world class player it is hard to feel sympathy for a man who has created a bar that is higher than most in that country. Few genuine world class players (which Rooney is not) do not play in four different positions during a game which is what the Manchester United man did, flipping from the left to the right back to the left and then up front as England made their subs. For me, he should be played up top as a striker but it is clear his manager has very little faith in him at the moment. - Rooney, who wasted a great chance by blasting wide on 61 minutes, has now played nine games in World Cups, combining for 685 minutes. He has more red cards (1) than goals (0). - Rooneys positioning aside it is difficult to think of anything Hodgson could have done differently. His team simply isnt near as good as Italy. He had no answer for the technical brilliance of Italys central midfield so he played his own game, counter attacking with pace. - That was how they scored their goal, from this position (below) when it took five seconds for Sterling-Rooney-Daniel Sturridge to make it 1-1. - Italy were excellent. Andrea Pirlo was even better than he was two years ago at Euro 2012 and alongside Daniele De Rossi and Marco Verratti were able to dictate the flow of the game. - England defended well and countered but it was difficult to play that style for the entire game and once again England didnt score in the second half (eighth time in their last nine at major tournaments). - Italy did and it came from a break down the right. Darmian hugged the touchline while the runs of his team-mates already had England nervous as Baines points... Darmian plays Candreva in behind and Englands backline is stretched... Claudio Marchisio makes an intelligent run to distract Glen Johnson. Candreva cuts back and prepares a great cross for Mario Balotelli to head home the winning goal. Colombia 2-0 Greece - The wonderfully proud country of Colombia had waited 5832 days to see their team play at a World Cup. Few things are worth waiting that long for but no Colombian in Belo Horizonte cared anything about the past on this day. - A year ago they were considered a contender for this World Cup. It scarred the country terrorized by high expectations of 1994 that ended in tragic circumstances. A year on, they were written off by some. Now it was their time to shine. - The stadium was a sea of yellow and on the pitch the game was played at South American pace. For the third successive day a South American team scored early, and when Pablo Armeros shot bundled into the back of the net on five minutes it was the earliest goal of the World Cup so far. - Armero got the glory but the architect was James Rodriguez. Without Radamel Falcao, manager Jose Pekerman misses a star striker but it does allow him to play five in midfield, something you cannot do with Falcao in the side. This meant James was placed deeper in a number ten role where he was given license to roam all over the field. - On the opening goal he picked up the ball deep and had the vision and guile to play a gorgeous ball into space for Juan Cuadrado to run on to. The moment he pinned the ball deep he sprinted into the box and within eight seconds was in the box, receiving the ball and drawing defenders towards him. Moments after this shot he dummied the ball and allowed Armero to slot the goal home. - Greece were forced to come out of their comfort zone and were the best team for 30 minutes in the first half. This is important because their World Cup is not solely based one match. How they react to this will be vital. Uruguay 1-3 Costa Rica - It is the World Cup that keeps on giving. A stunning result in Fortaleza has thrown a cat amongst the pigeons inside group D and no one can say Costa Rica didnt deserve it. - They were 7:1 underdogs heading into this game but they showed just how silly those odds looked. Bob Gainey Jersey. They never looked unsettled after going a goal down, through an Edinson Cavani penalty, and would defend brilliantly when asked. - At times they played a 5-5-0 formation with Bryan Ruiz and Joel Campbell dropping deep and demanding the ball. It was some contrast to Uruguays front two who couldnt get in the game. - World Cups do not care one bit for reputations. They create them. Many times we have seen old, slow players passed their prime be chewed up by the biggest stage and a day after Iker Casillas faltered for Spain, Diego Forlan did the same for Uruguay. - With no Luis Suarez (knee), Uruguays over-reliance on the front two meant the 2010 Golden Ball winner was thrust back into the limelight. It seemed like a big gamble by Oscar Tabarez and so it proved. Uruguay have a pedestrian midfield four, their wide players offer little, meaning the front two needs to click. Forlans place in the side pushed Edinson Cavani further forward and the two were invisible. Cavani is wasted as a pure target man. - It was a night that exposed Uruguays flaws. Much of their success has come against teams who have a lot of the ball who they can counter against. They couldnt do that today and, for once, when asked to be the team that dictated the match they buckled. - Fernando Muslera in goal is pathetic at this level; his centre-backs have no confidence in him or each other at set plays and dont have any help defensively – outside of Cavani – when clearing. The alarm bells were ringing in that area at half-time and Costa Rica exposed them in the second half. - Joel Campbell was great and benefited from a superb cross to score the first and laid in Marco Urena to complete the rout to make it 3-1. In between, Oscar Duarte wasnt tracked on a free kick and scored at the back post although he was inches offside. Ivory Coast 2-1 Japan - It was played while many slept in their beds or stumbled over their pint glass but if you missed it, you missed another good one. - For the fourth time already at this World Cup a team came from a losing position to take the lead. - Another trend at this World Cup has been momentum and, down 1-0 in the 64th minute Ivory Coast rocked Japan back, through the lively right back Serge Aurier. The Toulouse man, destined for a move to the Premier League, produced two outstanding crosses into the box in three minutes and headers from Wilfried Bony and Gervinho changed the game. - Japan, ahead through a Keisuke Honda bullet, couldnt find another gear. Much like Croatia, Spain and Uruguay they had been rocked by a comeback and were not the same when behind. - Yaya Toure doesnt look himself, however, and a funny moment took place in the first half when the ball from a teammate hit him in the face. He shook it off without a problem but I wondered if his mate didnt care too much for birthday cakes. Man of the Day Nominees: Mark Geiger – The World Cup needed a good referee to step up and get things right. The American, who was helped by Canadian Joe Fletcher as his assistant, did exactly that in the first day of the game. James Rodriguez – The Monaco magician was 7-years-old the last time Colombia played a World Cup. He has performed wonderfully in the Champions League but this was his big moment. He is so important to Jose Pekerman, allowing him to play five in midfield and be that deep lying playmaker, making up a midfield three, while also providing the decisive runs into the final third. His passing map (46 of 52) was special. (Stats powered by Opta) Joel Campbell – We should be careful using small sample sizes to come to conclusions about the club game but no one can convince me that Yaya Sanogo is a better option at Arsenal, the club that Campbell belongs to. Andrea Pirlo – Nothing he does should surprise anyone any more. England couldnt find a plan to counter him so they simply didnt even try this time. Antonio Candreva – His tactical intelligence was marvelous. It is one thing for a coach to set out a team to play a certain way; it is something different to have his players recognize key developments in-game. The winner: Andrea Pirlo – Candreva may have changed the game, Balotelli and Claudio Marchisio may have scored the goals but it was Pirlo who was the maestro and who everyone was talking about. It doesnt matter what country you support, this is the last time you will see the magician at a World Cup. Simply sit back and enjoy him while you can. What Comes Next? Switzerland vs Ecuador (12pm/9am), France vs Honduras (3pm/noon), Argentina vs Bosnia-Herzegovina (6pm/3pm). Burning Question for Tomorrow Can Switzerlands young stars find the space and beat Ecuador in a pivotal Group E match? New York, NY (SportsNetwork. Nick Foligno Blue Jackets Jersey .com) - LaMarcus Aldridge posted his fifth straight double-double and the Portland Trail Blazers kicked off a five-game road trip with a 103-99 win over the New York Knicks. The Knicks led 97-96 late in the fourth when Aldridge made a pair of free throws to put Portland in front. Aldridge then converted a layup and after Amare Stoudemires dunk had the Knicks within one, he potted a stepback jumper for a 102-99 edge. Carmelo Anthony and Pablo Prigioni missed jumpers on the next two Knicks touches, and Wesley Matthews split a pair of free throws to seal the contest with 1.7 to play. Aldridge had 24 points and 11 rebounds, Damian Lillard scored 20 points and Matthews chipped in 18 for the Blazers, winners in four straight and 13 of their last 14. Anthonys 23-point, 10-rebound effort and J.R. Smiths 20 points off the bench werent enough for the slumping Knicks, who just cant seem to find the winning formula. Instead, the Sacramento Kings spoiled those plans -- and James hurt himself in the process. DeMarcus Cousins had 27 points and 17 rebounds, Rudy Gay scored 26 and the Kings rallied from an early 17-point deficit to beat the short-handed Heat 108-103 in overtime Friday night. "I thought our guys accepted the challenge," Sacramento coach Michael Malone said. James said he strained his right groin before finishing with 33 points, eight rebounds and eight assists as Miamis six-game winning streak ended. Whether he plays at Portland on Saturday night is uncertain. "It aint feeling too good right now," James said. The two-time defending NBA champions played without Dwyane Wade (resting his knees), Ray Allen (right knee tendinitis) and Chris Andersen (sore back). James stayed mostly on the perimeter in the second half when his injury started to swell. The Kings capitalized on the opportunity. Isaiah Thomas had 22 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds to help Sacramento (9-19) upend the Heat (22-7) a week after a blowout loss in Miami. Gay made a tying jumper in the final minutes of regulation, and the Kings quickly pulled away in the extra period to bring the sellout crowd of 17,317 roaring to its feet. "This is a new team, and for us to come out and perform against one of the best teams in the league, its a pretty good feeling," Cousins said. Malone even called out his players mistakes publicly following a loss to New Orleans on Monday. He gave his players a couple of days off around Christmas and asked them, "What type of team do we want to be this season?" "The biggest thing is we responded," Gay said. The Kings overcame 23 turnovers and some lacklustredefence at the start to pull off the comeback. Sacramento outshot Miami 49.4 per cent to 44.2 per cent and outrebounded the Heat 51-35. A day after winning The Associated Press 2013 Male Athlete of the Year, James helped the Heat build a big lead early but couldnt hold off a late Kings rally by himself. He also appeared to tweak his left ankle when he fell into the crowd after missing a layup in the second quarter, but hee said his ankle felt fine. Ryan Murray Blue Jackets Jersey. . James set up Chris Bosh for a dunk, then made one of two free throws to put the Heat ahead 89-85 with 2:42 remaining in the fourth. A few plays later, Mario Chalmers was called for a flagrant foul after pushing Cousins to the ground. Cousins made both free throws, and Gay hit a tying turnaround jumper. After Gay forced a turnover by James, Thomas missed a running shot. James came down with the rebound, dribbled down court and missed a difficult 3-pointer over Gay at the regulation buzzer. Gay made a 3 and Thomas hit a pull-up shot at the start of overtime. After James made a driving layup, Thomas answered with another from beyond the arc to give the Kings a 97-91 lead. James still nearly rallied Miami from eight points down in the final minute. He hit three consecutive 3-pointers -- sandwiched between Sacramento scores -- to bring the Heat within three with 13.1 seconds left. But James and the Heat simply ran out of time. At the outset, James wasted no time putting Miami in control. He scored nine points and assisted on two of Shane Battiers three 3-pointers during a 23-6 run to open the game. With James on the bench, Sacramento sliced Miamis lead to seven in the second quarter. The four-time NBA MVP returned and restored order -- at least for a moment -- to help the Heat go ahead 55-45 at halftime. The Kings outscored Miami 29-18 in the third quarter behind big plays from Cousins and Gay -- with almost all of them directed by Thomas. Sacramento entered the fourth with a 74-73 lead to set up a furious finish. "The game turned in the third quarter," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "Probably more than anything our offence got us in trouble. A lot of jump shots. And they stepped up their defence. You have to give them credit for that." NOTES: James passed Larry Bird (21,791 points) and Gary Payton (21,813 points) to move into 29th place on the NBAs career scoring list. ... Spoelstra said Greg Odens rehabilitation from various knee injuries is progressing, but the centre is not expected to play in Miamis lone visit to Portland on Saturday night. ... Cousins was called for his NBA-leading ninth technical foul after arguing with officials in the first quarter. ... The Heat entered with a 7-0 record against Western Conference teams this season. The Philadelphia Flyers will aim for their third win of the season against the Ottawa Senators, as the Eastern Conference combatants complete their 2013-14 season series in Mondays clash at Canadian Tire Centre. Leonard Fournette Jersey . Philadelphia is 2-0 against the Senators this season and scored five goals in each victory. The Flyers recorded a 5-0 win in Ottawa on Nov. 12 and then earned a 5-2 home decision on Nov. 19. The Flyers have claimed three straight and four of the last five encounters with the Sens overall and Philly has won two in a row and three of its past four tests in Canadas capital city. Ottawa enters Mondays season-series finale against the Flyers having lost two straight and four of its last five games. The Senators were able to record a point in their most recent outing, dropping Saturdays shootout decision against the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs. James van Riemsdyk scored 97 seconds into the game and again in a shootout to help the Maple Leafs notch the 4-3 win. It was Torontos first road win since Oct. 30, ending a seven-game slide as the guest. Ottawa did well to earn a point on Saturday, as the Senators rallied from a 3-1 deficit with third-period goals by Erik Condra and Erik Karlsson. However, Maple Leafs goaltender James Reimer stopped Jason Spezza and Milan Michalek in the shootout. Van Riemsdyk beat Craig Anderson with a backhand and Mason Raymond slipped a shot past the Ottawa goalies glove to give the Maple Leafs the extra point. Clarke MacArthur also scored for the Senators, who fell to 3-7-1 in their last 11 games. "We fell a little short tonight, but there was a lot of positive for us," said MacArthur. "They found a way to score on some opportunities, but I think we outplayed them here." Ottawa suffered its fifth straight loss on home ice and fell to 4-8-3 this season at Canadian Tire Centre. The Flyers, meanwhile, lost for the second time in three games Saturday afternoon in Dallas and are now 2-2-0 on a six-game road trip that is set to end Wednesday at Chicago. All told, Philadelphia is 6-7-2 as the visiting team this season. Philly was slammed 5-1 by the Stars on Saturday, as Tyler Seguin recorded a natural hat trick in the second period to lead the hosts to the easy win at American Airlines Center. Andrej Meszaros provided the sole offense for the Flyers, who played without co-leading goal scorer Vincent Lecavalier for the third straight time. On Sunday, the Flyers announced Lecavalier will miss the next 3-to-4 weeks with a non-displaced fracture in his lower back. Although Lecavalier has posted a solid 14 points on nine goals and five assists in his first season as a Flyer, hes also been plagued by injuries. The 33-year-old center has battled various ailments while playing in just 22 of Philadelphias 29 games so far in 2013-14. "I would say were probably going to get by as is," Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said of the injury situation. "(Lecavalier) does play a big role on our team. Its hard to go out and replace a guy like that. You just have to hope other guys pick it up. Theres opportunity for other guys to perform now." Steve Mason allowed four goals on 26 shots in Saturdays loss and was pulled after the second period. It was the first time the former Columbus goaltender had surrendered more than three goals since arriving in Philly in a trade with the Blue Jackets last season. Ray Emery finished with seven saves in the final 20 minutes. "There were some mistakes we did against their top players and they put it in the back of the net," Flyers captain Claude Giroux said after the loss in Dallas. "We cant be making those mistakes." Mason could get the start again on Monday and is sporting a 5-2-0 record and a 1.71 goals against average in seven career games against the Senators. Emery, a former Senator, is 2-0 with a 1.00 GAA in two lifetime tests against his old club. In addition to Lecavalier, the Flyers also could be without defenseman Kimmo Timonen on Monday. ST. JOHNS, N.L. -- The St Johns IceCaps got an early preview of what it will take to win in the post-season. Jerome Samson scored the eventual winner as St. Johns defeated the visiting Springfield Falcons 3-1 on Saturday in American Hockey League action. The IceCaps currently sit in fourth spot in the Eastern Conference, four points behind Springfield, while the Falcons are just one of two clubs in the East to have already clinched a playoff spot. "That is the kind of team, the kind of squad, we are going to have to beat in the playoffs down the road," said Samson. "The kind of game we played, to be hanging around 3-0 and almost get the shutout, it shows a lot and builds up our confidence." Samsons goal came on what he described as a "broken play" at 10:55 of the second period and gave St. Johns a two-goal advantage. "I took a shot off a defenceman and then the puck was kind of scrambling and then (Brenden) Kichton ended up behind the net," said Samson. "I got open on the side of the net and the goalie was kind of swimming in the crease a little bit, so that helped me. It was a huge goal for us, to get the two-goal lead."; John Albert had a pair of goals for the IceCaps (42-22-6) while Tyler Beskorowany made 23 saves for the victory. Jalen Ramsey Jersey. . Patrick McNeill replied for the Falcons (44-21-6). Jeremy Smith stopped 28 shots in defeat. Albert opened the scoring for the IceCaps when he picked up a loose puck off a rebound and buried a low wrist shot 4:34 into the first period. Albert added his second, finishing off a 2-on-1 give-and-go with captain Jason Jaffray 15:13 into the second period. McNeill put the Falcons on the board with a point shot that hit off a skate on the way through with 4:33 left in regulation time. St. Johns head coach Keith McCambridge was satisfied with his clubs effort, especially in the defensive zone, just one night after allowing eight goals against in a loss to Springfield. "I was impressed with the level we played at," he said. "I thought our attention (towards) the areas we thought we had to get better at, (things) that we werent at our peak performance in with regards to last night-- we were able to get offensive opportunities and keep pucks out of our net by bearing down and making sure we are strong in front of net." Bruce Boudreau has earned a reputation as a gambler and the Anaheim head coachs latest roll of the dice paid off in a big way. Alexandre Pato Jersey . Boudreau made a surprising decision to start highly-touted goaltending prospect John Gibson in Game 4 at Los Angeles on Saturday and the 20-year-old responded by posting a 28-save shutout to help the Ducks even this Western Conference semifinals series at 2-2. Gibson and the Ducks will aim for a repeat performance when they try to take their first lead of this best-of-seven set in Mondays Game 5 against the visiting Kings. The Ducks recalled Gibson after Frederik Andersen, another rookie goaltender, was hurt late in Game 3 and had to be replaced by veteran backstop Jonas Hiller. With Andersen sidelined on Saturday, Hiller was expected to get the Game 4 start due to his playoff experience, but Boudreau instead went with Gibson, who earned rave reviews in his NHL postseason debut. "As soon as we called him up, I thought about starting him," said Boudreau. "I thought he would give us the best chance to win." Gibson had gone 3-0-0 with a 1.33 goals-against average and one whitewash in three appearances at the tail end of the regular season for the Pacific Division champions. On Saturday, he became the first rookie to post a shutout in a playoff debut since Andrew Raycroft of the Boston Bruins against the Montreal Canadiens (3-0) on April 7, 2004. "When I found out I was going to play, I was excited," Gibson said. "I knew the team had to get a win tonight." The victory knotted the series at two games apiece and continue the trend of road teams winning in this series. Los Angeles claimed Games 1 and 2 in Anaheim before the Ducks clawed their way back into the series with two straight victories at the Staples Center. Gibson will be in net again on Monday with Hiller serving as the backup. Devante Smith-Pelly and Ryan Getzlaf provided early offense for the Ducks on Saturday, as both players tallied late in the opening period. Anaheim improved to 23-2 all-time in the postseason when Getzlaf scores a goal. Anaheim had 11 shots in the first period, but only registered three shots on net over the final 40 minutes. The Ducks went without a shot in the middle stanza, marking the first time an NHL club was held without a shot in a playoff period since it happened to Dallas against Edmonton on May 9, 1998 in Game 2 of the WCSF. While Gibson was able to record a shutout, Kings star goaltender Jonathan Quick was pulled after the first period. Quick stopped 9-of-11 shots and Martin Jones turned aside the three shots he faced over the final two periods. Kings head coach Darryl Sutter said the decision to pull his No. 1 goaltender was a tactical one and Quick should be in net when Game 5 gets underway. "It wasnt a tough thought process. They scored two goals. I dont think our goaltending is an issue. We have to finish off our shots to be successful," offered Sutter. The Kings hadnt been blanked in a home playoff contest since May 20, 2012, a 2-0 defeat to the Phoenix Coyotes in Game 4 of the Western Conference finals. L.A. forward Anze Kopitar had his point streak halted at 10 games, as he failed to pick up a point for the first time in this postseason. He was the first King to have points in 10 straight games in one postseason since Wayne Gretzky posted a franchise-record 12-game point streak in 1993. Kopitar has four goals and 11 assists to lead all players with 15 points in this postseason. The winner of Game 5 will have a chance to close the series out Wednesday in Los Angeles. The Kings, the 2012 Stanley Cup champions, are attempting to make the conference final round for a third straight spring. Anaheim is trying to advance to the third round for the first time since claiming the franchises lone Cup title in 2007. This best-of-seven set, which had been dubbed the "Freeway Series," marks the first-ever playoff matchup between these Southern California rivals. Nathaniel Chalobah Jersey . The 35-year-old from West Vancouver, B.C., broke her wrist in training Jan. 28 and required surgery to repair the compound fracture. "Ive been training everyday, Ive been doing physio everyday. My arm is getting better and better, its getting more range and getting the swelling out," Ricker said during a conference call Wednesday. "Everybodys done such an amazing job just as a team, as a whole support network to get me out the door and get me on the plane Saturday to get me over to Russia." Snowboard cross involves four athletes racing down a course at the same time, often jockeying for position. Rickers accident happened when she lost her balance during a training run on the X Games course in Vail, Colo. "It was in a section that Ive ridden dozens of times previous to that run. It was nothing new or surprising. I didnt control my speed as I should have," said Ricker, who won gold at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. "I did the exact opposite of what youre supposed to do -- I put my arm out to break the fall and unfortunately it broke me." Despite having a bone sticking of the side of her arm that "was crazy looking" less than three weeks before she was scheduled to compete in Sochi, Ricker said she was never concerned about her ability to participate. "I wasnt worried about that because I had so much support and reassurance right away that I was getting the absolute best medical care on the planet," she said. "I definitely felt that support and reassurance right away." Ricker said she wont get back on her snowboard until she reaches Sochi. She expects there to be some pain when she competes, mainly at the top of the course when she pulls herself out of the start gate. She said some of the exercises shes been doing since the injuury involve simulating a snowboard cross start using bungee cords and pulleys. Alvaro Morata Jersey. "I think its going to be better than maybe what I think, based just on my progress the last few days," said Ricker. "Everything is moving so much better than what I would ever imagine a week (post-operation) from breaking an arm. "I think its going to go quite well. Im really positive about this." Ricker and her fellow womens snowboard cross competitors will get their first look at the Sochi course Feb. 12, with the initial training session scheduled for two days later. The race is scheduled to go Feb. 16. Ricker has fought through injuries before -- including a crash right before the Vancouver Games as well as a concussion this past December -- and expects to be able to do the same in Sochi. "Id be lying if I said it wouldnt be in the back of my mind," she said. "Im hoping everything will go as a usual competition and thats where I spend a lot of time visualizing and thinking about the race and technically what Im doing on the board. Usually that overpowers any pain or anything else thats going on." Ricker made her Olympic debut in 1998 on Canadas halfpipe team at Nagano, Japan. She returned to the Games in 2006 at Turin, Italy, with the snowboard cross team but crashed and had to be airlifted to hospital. She returned in 2010 to win gold and it sounds like shes equally motivated this time around. "It sounds crazy, but its helped me," said Ricker of the injury. "This is almost like there was this burning fire, desire. Its almost like somebody doused a bunch of gasoline on the fire so Im pretty ready to go. I can feel the adrenaline and I can feel the excitement of going over to Russia. "Im actually just going to use that as a positive and use that for motivation to just get me through these couple of weeks and hopefully have the race of my life." Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork. Yasiel Puig Jersey .com) - Michael Del Zotto recorded the games lone goal and Steve Mason stopped 30 shots as Philadelphia claimed a 1-0 decision over Toronto on Saturday. Mason made his 100th career appearance for the club a memorable one, recording his second shutout of the season and 25th career whitewash for the Flyers, who have won a season-high four straight games. Right from the start, it was almost like one goal was going to be enough, and thats what it turned out to be, said Mason. For a goaltender, you just have to focus on the next shot and not look at the big picture. James Reimer made 17 saves for the Maple Leafs, whose losing skid reached nine consecutive outings. My job is not to score goals, my job isnt to put the puck in the net its to keep it out. We lost 1-0 and I see that as I didnt do my job well enough, Reimer lamented. Del Zotto beat Reimer high and inside the far post from a sharp angle in the left circle just 4:05 into the contest. Mason made 12 saves in the first, his best a dive from right to left to smother a Nazem Kadri chance with roughly two minutes on the clock. After a relatively sedate eight-save second period, Mason then made a shoulder stop to seal off the near post on a Morgan Rielly wraparound try with 5 1/2 minutes left in the contest. It looked obviously dangerous from the bench, but it didnt seem like he had a whole lot to shoot at, said Flyers head coach Craig Berube. Jakub Voracek was sent off for tripping with 3:31 remaining and the Leafs received their first power-play chance at a crucial time. Toronto recorded just one quality chance on the advantage. The hosts couldnt convert a 3-on-1 chance immediately after Voracek exited the penalty box, and Reimer was called to the bench for an extra skater a short time later. An icing with 5.4 showing put a right-wing faceoff in the Leafs offensive zone. Toronto won the draw, but Phil Kessel missed high and wide from the left wing as time ran out. Player safety and financial stability are two of the main messages CFL commissioner Mark Cohon discussed on Friday during his annual state of the league news conference. Kieran Gibbs Jersey . Television numbers were once again strong for the CFL this season, including big rating numbers for both the Eastern and Western Finals that were better than even hockey broadcasts from the same weekend. "The business model of our league is getting stronger," said Cohon. "We are focused on building a bright future for this league." The addition of the Ottawa RedBlacks next season will bring the leagues total of teams to nine and, with the current financial climate of the league, could open the possibility of further expansion into Atlantic Canada and a 10th team. "It was a pipe dream years ago but now that we are building a strong base, we can engage in those conversations." One of Sundays Grey Cup teams, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats will be moving into a new stadium next season and the league is committed to having them host the title game at some point, though an exact year has yet to be decided. "We want to bring the Grey Cup back to Hamilton and in the new year, we are going to sit down with the board of governors to talk about the rotation. We are definitely bringing the Grey Cup back to Hamilton, I just dont want to put a timeline on it." The Toronto Argonauts will be looking for a new place to play when their lease expires at Rogers Centre and one of the rumoured landing spots for the franchise is BMO Field, the current home of Major League Soccer franchise, Toronto FC. Cohon believes there are lots of opportunities around the city and they will be able to find a place somewhere in Toronto for the Argos to call home. "There is interest at BMO Field," said Cohon. I wouldnt put a line in the sand and say they have to be downtown but it would be great if that came to fruition." One of the ways the CFL has attempted to improve the health of their players has been to increase the punishment levied on illegal hits, a system the commissioner believes is working. "Im confident in our relationship with the CFLPA when it comes to player discipline. The fines that we give are quite significant and I think it does change player behaviour." The number of concussions reported around the league this season was reduced by one from 43 in 2012 to 42 this season. The league is also working at the grassroots level to ensure that the players of the future are instructed in a better way to play the game. "We want to make sure that kids are learning how to tackle properly. Player safety in our league is mission critical," he added. This season, the league also produced a video that showed examples of hits that are dangerous and would be subject to fines. "We are constantly focused on making the game safer for our players." While there is a lot of interest in the information, Cohon believes that it is important for the dispersal draft lists for the upcoming expansion draft to be kept confidential. "We need to protect the relationship between the players and the coaches. My job is to protect the integrity of the game." Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain Jersey . The Denver Nuggets president explained Monday how he has closely "Afflalowed" the shooting guards two seasons in Orlando, before reacquiring him in a draft-day deal last week. "Afflalowed? I have followed," Kroenke quickly modified to laughter, "Arrons career since he left here." Theres no mistaking this: Afflalo has developed more of an all-around game since the Nuggets dealt him to the Magic on Aug. 10, 2012, as part of the blockbuster four-team, 12-player deal that also involved Dwight Howard. Back then, Afflalo was viewed as a defensive specialist with a solid jumper. Now, hes got more of a shooters mentality. So much so that Kroenke introduced him as a "new Arron Afflalo." "Arron took a lot of steps in his own growth over the time he was here and has since taken more steps," Kroenke said. "Im proud to see him doing the things hes been doing down in Orlando." The 28-year-old Afflalo is coming off a season with Orlando in which he averaged career highs in points (18.2), rebounds (3.6) and assists (3.4). He also made 128 3-pointers. This season, he will be reunited in the backcourt with Ty Lawson, who was one of the first to congratulate him after the trade that sent promising young point guard Evan Fournier to the Magic, along with a pick. "I want to continue to improve as a player," Afflalo said. "Im going to do my job, work hard this summeer to put myself in the best position. Danny Welbeck Jersey. " In some ways, Afflalo feels like he never really left the Nuggets as he always kept close tabs on his former team. And yet plenty has changed in his two-year absence. Namely, George Karl being replaced as coach by Brian Shaw. Afflalo is ready to take on whatever role Shaw has for him, whether its as a scorer or simply being Afflalo the leader. "My job is to make sure Im capable of getting that job done," Afflalo said. "I have no problem doing whatever coach asks of me." Thats the way he was with Karl, too. Afflalo couldve been a different type of player — more of a scorer, perhaps — in his first go-round with the Nuggets. But thats not what they needed, especially in the years when they had Chauncey Billups and Carmelo Anthony on the floor. "There are probably a lot of things I probably could do back then," said Afflalo, who will wear No. 10 for Denver this season. "But its not my job to come in here and prove I could score points with the lineup I was starting with three years ago. "These days, Im a lot more confident all over the court, whether its posting up, shooting 3s, being available in the fourth quarter, being someone you can rely on in the fourth quarter." As for his defensive tenacity, that will always be a source of pride with him. "Thats part of being a complete player," he said. "I expect to be at a high level on both ends of the court." SEATTLE -- Derek Jeter made his final regular season appearance in Seattle memorable. Carlos Valderrama Jersey . Seemed appropriate. Of all the stops on Jeters season-long farewell tour, Seattle holds a bit more meaning because this is where his career started. "You tend to think about the first time you came, when you got here," Jeter said. "Its still hard to think Im not going to play another game here but when you come to some of these cities you start thinking about a lot of the memories youve had here. Seattle will always be special because it was the beginning." Jeter had three hits, two RBIs and scored twice as the New York Yankees completed their first three-game sweep of the season with a 6-3 win over the Mariners on Thursday night. Jeter was honoured by the Mariners before the start of the series, then helped jump start the Yankees. Jeter had singles in his first two at-bats off Seattle starter Roenis Elias (5-5), then greeted reliever Dominic Leone with a two-run single in the fourth that gave the Yankees a 6-1 lead. Jeter finished the series with seven hits. "It feels good to come out here and win three games. Its not an easy place to win," New York manager Joe Girardi said. "Obviously they pitch very well and we had not scored a lot of runs off them." This night, and much of the series, was about Jeters farewell tour. His professional start came in Seattle in May 1995. He was given thundering ovations every time he stepped to the plate. Jeter received a standing ovation from the entire stadium on his final at-bat in the ninth. He grounded out on a comebacker to the mound and tipped his helmet as he jogged of the field. "Fans have always been good to me here. Even when they get on you a little bit they still respect you," Jeter said. "They were awesome." Jacoby Ellsbury hit a two-run homer in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to 16 games and gave starter Chase Whitley (2-0) an early lead. Whitley threw a career-high 7 2-3 innings to get his second straight win. He also got a huge defensive play from Ellsbury in the fifth, robbing former Yankees star Robinson Cano of at least a RBI double with a leaping catch at the wall in centre field. Whitley allowed just five hits and his only mistake was a pitch left up in the strike zone to Logan Morrison, who hit a line drive homer in the second inning. Whitley struck out six and has not walked a batter in his past four starts. David Robertson got the final two outs for his 16th save. "Chase has been consistent with his stuff. He doesnt beat himself. He doesnt walk people. Hes doing the little things," Girardi said. "Hes mixed in an outstanding changeup with his fastball and slider. He gets ahead in the count. We only saw him as a reliever. We werent sure what we had as a starter but hes done a really good job." Ellsbury did give the Yankees a brief scare when he left later in the game with tightness in his right hip. Ellsbury said he expected to be in the lineup Friday in Oakland. Both times Seattle was on the verge of a rally it could not get a two-out hit. The Mariners had runners at the corners in the third but Kyle Seager struck out looking on an inside fastball. In the fifth, James Jones chopped a two-out single to score Brad Miller. Cano then drove the first pitch from Whitley to deep left-centre, only to watch Ellsbury jump and haul in the drive crashing into the wall. Two innings later Brett Gardner added another defensive gem, hauling in Mike Zuninos drive at the top of the fence in left-centre to take away extra bases. Whitley said he was already looking toward the umpire for a new ball thinking Zuninos drive had left the park. "They were making good plays out there, keeping the ball in the yard and saving their guy some runs," Zunino said. "Thats all you can do is try and square the ball up." Billy Hamilton finished off Cincinnatis biggest comeback of the season for a doubleheader sweep.LENZERHEIDE, Switzerland - About four weeks after winning Olympic gold in the super-G, Anna Fenninger completed her run to the overall World Cup title Thursday by taking second in the same event. The 24-year-old Austrian finished behind Lara Gut at the World Cup Finals but built an unassailable 215-point lead over her Swiss friend with two races remaining this weekend. "Its just, Wow," said Fenninger, the first Austrian woman to win the overall title since Nicole Hosp in 2007. "It means that you are the best skier in the world over the whole season." Fenningers path to Alpine skiings most prestigious honour was made easier when her closest challenger, Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany, sustained season-ending injuries after crashing in the downhill on Wednesday. Still, her consistency over a tiring five-month season earned her the honour of becoming the 27th different womens champion since the World Cup launched in 1967. "You cant win the overall because you are lucky," Gut said. "You win the overall because you are the best." Fenninger carried the momentum of her Olympic exploits, including silver in giant slalom, into a surge of points in recent weeks. Her only slip since Sochi was a sixth-place finish in the final downhill on Wednesday, racing minutes before Hoefl-Riesch crashed. "I was so nervous yesterday it was not normal," Fenninger said. "But I learned from yesterday for today and Im stoked that I can show my good skiing again." Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein, who was second in the overall standings heading to Sochi, also wass lost for the season when she crashed in training on the Olympic downhill course. Guillermo Celis Jersey. Starting just before Gut on Thursday, Fenninger punched the air with her right fist after crossing the line, then blew a kiss to the television camera while waiting for her rival in the finish area. Gut then finished in 1 minute, 17.14 seconds on the sunbathed course, 0.61 seconds faster than Fenninger. Tina Maze of Slovenia, the defending overall champion, trailed Gut by 0.95 in third. Marie-Michele Gagnon of Lac-Etchemin, Que., did not finish. Guts victory, her second straight after her downhill success, clinched the season-long super-G title, a first career World Cup trophy for the 22-year-old Swiss racer. Gut looked up at the giant screens, pumped both fists and basked in a loud ovation from a 5,000-strong home crowd. "Its cool," the 22-year-old Gut said. "Winning it at home and finally bringing a (crystal) globe back to Switzerland, its amazing." Guts seventh World Cup race win this season is the most on the womens circuit, and leaves her third overall. Fenninger, however, won three giant slaloms — including back-to-back races last week in Are, Sweden — and racked up podium finishes. She finished second in the downhill standings, behind Hoefl-Riesch, and in super-G. She also stands second in the giant slalom race behind Jessica Lindell-Vikarby of Sweden. The final GS race closes the season on Sunday. By then, Austria hopes Marcel Hirscher will have clinched the mens overall title to give the Alpine nation its first double success since 2002.
