TORONTO -- Casey Janssen will not remember the all-star break fondly. Brian Urlacher Jersey . The Blue Jays closer fell victim to either food poisoning or a virus during a trip to the Dominican Republic. "It got me pretty good the other night," said Janssen, still looking a little pale. "Im feeling a little better today. Still a little weak." The six-foot four 205-pound Janssen required IVs after losing seven-plus pounds "in a matter of about 10 hours." "So just go ahead and think what that was like," he said wryly. "But Im starting to get down a little bit more food." Aaron Loup pitched the ninth in place of Janssen as the Jays downed the Texas Rangers 4-1 Saturday. "It eats you up when you cant help and compete. Obviously Loup did a great job (today) and we were able to get the win. But I think we need all hands on deck to try and make this second half special," said Janssen, who converted 14 of 16 save opportunities in the first half of the season. "I hope to be in the middle of it and be a big part of it." Mike Singletary Jersey . The New York Rangers centre had a goal and two assists in a 4-1 victory over the Ottawa Senators ending a 13-game goal-scoring drought. MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Ben Cranes back is OK, and his putter couldnt be working much better. The combination helped him shoot a 5-under 65 on Friday to open a six-stroke lead in the St. Jude Classic before heavy rain delayed play twice and forced the suspension of play for the day. Crane birdied his final hole Thursday night for a 63 and rolled in a 44-footer for birdie to start the second round Friday morning. He had a 12-under 128 total at TPC Southwind, matching the winning score in relation to par last year. "I certainly didnt see this coming," Crane said. "But you know when youre putting well, I started to feel like I was a little more in control of my ball, just felt like I was tightening my draws and fades a little bit. I had access to some holes I havent this year and so gosh, its been an incredible two days." Crane has spent the past six months changing his swing to protect his back. A four-time PGA Tour winner, Cranes last win came in 2011 at the McGladrey Classic and his best finish this year was a tie for ninth in the Humana Challenge in January. But he was in such pain he had a therapist with him for treatment during the round. "Its been a really, really hard year, racking my brain whats going on, whats going wrong and have I changed that much," Crane said. "You start wondering, Am I going to get it back. So this is super encouraging. My wife said last night, looks like you still got it. Because you wonder. But anyway, its been a fun start." Carl Pettersson and Jason Bohn were tied for second at 6 under. Pettersson had one hole left, and Bohn had two to play. Davis Love III (70) and Billy Horschel (68) were in at 5 under. Phil Mickelson and Retief Goosen were unable to start the second round. Mickelson, winless in his last 19 events since the British Open, opened with a 67 on Thursday, and Goosen had a 66. Friday got off to a slow start with 60 players needing to wrap up the first round with the second started 40 minutes later. Lightning delayed play at 1:03 for 59 minutes before play resumed for 13 minutes. Micckelson had just gotten to the tee when the horn blew again. Akiem Hicks Jersey. Fans were sent home before a severe thunderstorm drenched the course, filling bunkers, fairways and cart paths with water. Finally, play for the day was suspended just before 5 p.m. Players are due back at 7 a.m. so they can make the cut for the third round. Love was glad to be done before the weather moved in even at 5 under, and he doubts Crane will run out to 24 under. This course where John Cook won at 26 under in 1996 was redesigned to a par of 70 after 2004. "So hes off to a great start and well have to run him down," Love said about Crane. "Hes a great putter, and these greens are perfect, so hes got the advantage on us right now, but just hang in there." Crane had perfect timing for most of his rounds. He played most of the first round after the lengthy delay Thursday afternoon, which left nearly perfect scoring conditions with little wind and soft greens. He was in the first group off No. 1 starting the second round, and he birdied rolling in a putt with a break of more than 4 feet for the first of 24 putts. He followed up his opening birdie by sinking a 22-footer for birdie on No. 7. He hit his approach from 147 yards out to 3 feet for birdie on No. 9 to reach 10 under through 27 holes. He sunk a 14-footer on the par-3 11th with the island green before rolling in a 9-footer for birdie on No. 13. His 8-foot birdie on the par-5 16th put him at 13 under. But Crane hit into a bunker on No. 18 and missed a 7-footer to save par on way to his first bogey in two rounds. "How do I keep this going?" Well, certainly just keep doing what Im doing, and hopefully the same game shows up, and obviously continuing to putt well helps your score," Crane said. "I think thats the key. CORNER BROOK, N. Kevin Gausman Jersey .L. — Braden Calvert’s Manitoba team won’t have much time to savour its second straight men’s gold medal at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Curling Championships. The mad dash back to Winnipeg will begin at approximately 2:15 a.m. local time in Corner Brook Monday as the team catches the bus to the airport in Deer Lake — approximately three hours after finishing off its 8-6 gold-medal game victory over Saskatchewan’s Jacob Hersikorn at the Corner Brook Civic Centre. Two flights later, the team is scheduled to land in Winnipeg to an undoubtedly memorable airport reception with friends, family and local media. And then, Tuesday, it’s off to Brandon for practice day at the Manitoba men’s championship in preparation for Wednesday’s first-round game against East St. Paul’s Evan Martin. So much for a week-long celebration. “I’m in a little bit of shock right now,” marvelled Calvert, a 19-year-old University of Manitoba student. “We’re just overwhelmed and super-excited about winning the national championship, and I’m sure it’ll sink in a little bit more tomorrow.” Sunday’s win — marking Manitoba’s third straight M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors men’s gold medal, after Calvert’s victory last year in Liverpool, N.S., and Matt Dunstone’s win the year before in Fort McMurray, Alta. — capped a brilliant week for Dunstone, third Kyle Kurz, second Lucas Van Den Bosch, lead Brendan Wilson and coach Tom Clasper. After losing their opener to Quebec’s Félix Asselin, the Manitobans rattled off 10 straight victories en route to gold. In the final, Manitoba never trailed, taking single points in the first two ends, one more in the third and a beautiful chap-and-lie deuce in the sixth to go up 5-2. “It wasn’t an easy shot, and definitely wasn’t easy to look at from the hack,” said an admiring Kurz of the sixth-end masterpiece. “You couldn’t see the inside of it, and if it’s heavy at all, it’s hanging outside and we’re not getting our deuce. But I had full confidence in him making that shot; he makes those left, right and centre.” Saskatchewan would bounce back with deuces in the seventh and ninth ends, sandwiched around a Manitoba single to tie the game. In the 10th, though, Hersikorn’s last-rock draw attempt came up short and Calvert didn’t need to throw his last rock. “I think being here once and doing it once definitely helped us focus on what we had to do and helped us handle the nerves a bit better,” said Calvert. “I thought we were a lot more comfortable this year.” It was an all-around good week for the team; back at the Calvert family cattle ranch in Carberry, it was calving season. Braden’s older brother Trevor handled one of those births, and immediately named the newborn Tommy in honour of the team coach. While that aspiring bull is taking its first tottering steps, the Calvert team will have aspirations of its own at the Manitoba men’s championship. “It’s pretty neat to go to an event where you have Jeff Stoughton, Mike McEwen and Reid Carruthers at it, guys you’ve watched on TV and idolized for years,” he said. “It’s amazing to know that we’ll have a chance to play them. We’ll have a lot of fun at that event.” Once the Manitoba championship is done, Calvert will turn his attention to wearing the Maple Leaf at the 2015 World Junior Championships, beginning Feb. 28 in Tallinn, Estonia. Last year in Flims, Switzerland, the Canadian team lost the bronze-medal game to Norway. “We can’t await to put the Maple Leaf on and try to do Camada proud, and hopefully do a little bit better than last year. Green Bay, WI - Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will again watch from the sideline on Sunday when his teammates take on the Pittsburgh Steelers. R.A. Dickey Jersey . Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Rodgers was limited in practice Friday and has not yet been medically cleared to play as the former MVP continues his recovery from a fractured collarbone. Matt Flynn will again get the start Sunday with Rodgers set to miss a seventh straight game. "I thought Aaron Rodgers did everything he possibly could, but this is an organizational decision," said McCarthy on Friday. "As an organization we are not ready for him to play. Im not going to get into ifs and buts and who made what decision. Matt Flynn is the starter and were excited to play the Pittsburgh Steelers." Rodgers has been practicing in earnest each of the last two weeks. He had hoped to play last Sunday against Dallas, but remained sidelined and watched as Flynn rallied the Packers to a 37-36 victory that kept Green Bays playoff hopes very much alive. The Packers now control their own postseason destiny, as wins over the Steelers and Chicago Bears over the final two weeks would give Green Bay the NFC North title. Flynn has led Green Bay to back-to-back victories, both one-point decisions. The Packers held on for a 22-21 win over Atlanta in Week 14 before last weeks 23-point rally against the Cowboys. Over those two starts, he has completed 50-of-71 passes for 557 yards and five touchdowns with two interceptions. Rodgers has not played since sustaining his injury on the opening drive of Green Bays eventual 27-20 loss to rival Chicago on Nov. 4. The Packers proceeded to go 0-3-1 over the next four weeks with their star signal-caller on the shelf, before to turning things around the past two games. Packers running back Eddie Lacy was also limited in practice and listed as probable as he battles an ankle issue. Defensive tackle Johnny Jolly wont play because of a shoulder/neck injury. Darrun Hilliard scored 16 points, JayVaughn Pinkston added 13 and the Wildcats beat Milwaukee 73-53 on Thursday night in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Villanova (29-4), the No. 2 seed in the East Region, will play seventh-seeded Connecticut (27-8) in the third round Saturday. The Huskies held off Saint Josephs 89-81 in overtime. No. 15 seed Milwaukee (21-14), the surprise champion of the Horizon League, made it a game all the way, leading much of the first half before fading late. Villanova was eager to get back on the court after being upset last week by Seton Hall in the Big East quarterfinals, but the effect of that loss seemed to linger. A 14-point run spanning halftime gave the Wildcats a nine-point lead early in the second half and they held on. Hilliards long 3-pointer from the top of the key with 8:10 left gave them a 53-42 advantage, and the Panthers couldnt recover. James Bell had 12 points for Villanova on 5-of-14 shooting and missed all eight 3s he attempted. Kris Jenkins and Josh Hart each scored 11. Austin Arians had 17 points to lead Milwaukee and Matt Tiby scored 10. Jordan Aaron, Milwaukees leading scorer, finished with six points, all in the second half, on 1-of-15 shooting. Kyle Kelm, second in scoring, had eight points, all after the break. The Panthers rags-to-riches march into the tourney ended, but not without a fight. Villanova outscored Milwaukee 46-20 in the paint and had 19 fast-break points to overcome a woeful 4-for-23 shooting performance from behind the arc. After struggling mightily, Villanova scored the final nine points of the first half and the first five of the second. Pinkstons three-point play and follow gave Villanova a 32-23 lead. Kelms first basket of the game, a layup off the glass, stopped a scoreless skid that had lasted more than 6 minutes and cut the lead to seven. After Aaron missed an open 3, Hart countered with a three-point play for Villanova and Jenkins followed with a 3 in transition after blocking a shot by JeVon Lyle at the other end. That gave the Wildcats a 42-33 lead midway through the half. Villanova extended the margin to 55-44 on Harts layup with 7:19 left, and the Panthers never got closer than nine the rest of the way. Milwaukee closed the seaason with five straight wins, including a surprising overtime win over preseason favourite Green Bay in the Horizon Conference tournament, to surpass the 20-win plateau. Custom Atlanta Braves Jerseys. Not bad for a team that finished 8-24 a year ago. Milwaukees 13-win increase was the best year-to-year improvement in the country, and the Panthers were the only team in the NCAA tournament that finished last in its league a year ago. They showed they belonged on the big stage, too, leading a team ranked in the top 10 for much of the first half. Both defences swarmed right from the opening tip. The Panthers missed their first six shots, getting one of them blocked, and fell behind 6-0. Even high attempts off the glass on drives misfired as the Wildcats tried to set the tone early despite faltering from the field. Halfway through the first half, Villanova led 10-8, the teams were a combined 6 for 29, and the Wildcats were scoreless on five tries from behind the arc. Clearly, the Panthers werent intimidated by the Big East regular-season champions, and J.J. Panoske hit an open 3 from the left wing to give Milwaukee a surprising 13-10 lead with 8 minutes left in the period. The Panthers play in the Wisconsin style that coach Bo Ryan brought to Milwaukee before he took over the Badgers, whipping the ball around looking for the open man. After Bells steal and slam gave Nova a 16-15 lead, a wide-open Arians hit consecutive 3-pointers from the right side for a 21-16 lead with 4:52 left as the Panthers fans cheered. The Wildcats finally settled down, holding the Panthers scoreless for the final 4:05 of the period. Hilliards three-point play tied it at 23, and a driving layup by Bell and a slam dunk by Pinkston put Villanova back on top. Villanova went into the break with a 27-23 lead despite missing all 12 attempts from behind the arc, six by Bell. Villanova averaged nine 3s per game this season and shot 36.1 per cent from long range, but the Wildcats allowed opponents to hit 35.4 per cent of their 3-pointers and the Panthers took advantage, hitting five before the break to stay in the game. Milwaukee relies a lot on Aaron, its leading scorer at 15 points per game. He had four assists and four rebounds but failed to score in the first half, missing seven shots. Kelm, averaging 12.6 points, also went scoreless. Cheap NFL JerseysWholesale JerseysWholesale NFL JerseysJerseys From ChinaWholesale NFL JerseysCheap NFL JerseysCheap Jerseys ' ' '

Dylan Kwasniewski won the pole for his Nationwide Series debut -- the first rookie since Rusty Wallace in 1985 to win the pole at Daytona -- by following Patrick and Kyle Larson through traffic in Fridays qualifying session. The 18-year-old topped the speed chart with a lap at 192.078 mph in the rain-shortened qualifying session. Larson qualified second with a lap at 192.074 and Patrick was third as Turner Scotts cars went 1-2-3 for Saturdays race. "Danica did a fantastic job of leading us through the pack and getting us clean through there," said Kwasniewski, winner of the K&N East title last year and the K&N West title in 2012. "Being a rookie, it was hard for me to make the decisions on where to go," he said. "Danica did a fantastic job, she got us through clean and I was coming up to a sea of cars on the back straight and I was like, I have no idea how we are going to be able to get us through this. But she picked her way through perfectly, got us in the right possition and got us all three a great lap. Carlo Pinsoglio Jersey. We stuck together and made sure we could be a team out there." The qualifying session was the first for NASCARs new multicar, knockout-style format. All cars were on track for the opening 25-minute segment that was interrupted twice by rain. The fastest 24 cars were scheduled to advance to a second, 10-minute round, but it was rained out. There were as many as 30 cars on the track at one point, which made the one segment that was run far more entertaining than the traditional single-car runs NASCAR had used. Patrick acknowledged the session was worth watching, but could be interesting as the season progresses. "I think there are some times when its going to be a total disaster," Patrick said. "Like when we go to short tracks. I just cant imagine where its going to be like. (At Daytona), theres plenty of room, people can go wherever, theres many lanes, its all about momentum. But when you go to places like Bristol, Martinsville and even Phoenix. Short tracks in general are just going to be a really big challenge. Not so much for Jeff Teague and the Atlanta Hawks. Hinrich buried six big free throws down the stretch and Teague had a couple of costly turnovers as the Bulls held on for a 107-103 victory at Atlanta on Tuesday night. Mike Dunleavy scored 22 points for the Bulls, who have won six of seven. Joakim Noah had 20 points and 12 rebounds, and Carlos Boozer finished with 17 points and 11 boards. Dunleavy also had eight rebounds and four assists. He was covered in ice bags as he sat slumped at his locker after playing all but nine seconds in the game. "I appreciate (coach Tom Thibodeau) giving me that nine-second breather at the end of the half," Dunleavy said with a laugh. "That made a big difference." The Bulls won after trailing by 14 points in the first quarter. "They put us in a hole; we fought out of it," Dunleavy said. "We just had to battle the whole game." Since Jan. 1, Chicago is 12-1 when holding its opponent under 90 points. No other team in the league has kept as many opponents under 90 in that span. Teague had 26 points for the short-handed Hawks, who have lost nine of 10. Shelvin Mack scored 17. The Bulls led most of the second half but never pushed the advantage to double figures. "I think they really wanted that game today," Noah said of the Hawks. "We really wanted that game, too. It wasnt pretty at times. Im just happy we were able to come out with the win." Scott said Noah hit his arm but added "Cant do nothing about it now." Budenholzer also protested Carrolls foul on Hinrich but said after watching the replay he agreed with that call. The Hawks also were without centres Pero Antic (stress fracture, right ankle) and Gustavo Ayon (right shoulder), who had filled in following Al Horfords season-ending torn pectoral muscle. Budenholzer said morale isnt a problem. "I thought our group competed at a very high level for 48 minutes tonight," Budenholzer said. "Thats what were looking for, and thats what is most important to us." Korver hit 3-pointers on Atlantas first two possessions, extending his NBA record to 125 straight games with a 3. Korver added a third trey a couple minutes later, and his strong start seemed to spark the Hawks, who jumped to a 26-12 lead. Chicago closed the deficit with a 13-2 run in the final minutes of the opening period and start of the second quarter. The Bulls led 54-51 at halftime. Mack sank a short jumper with about 2 seconds remaining in the third period. D.J. Augustin, who had 10 points, then banked in a half-court shot for Chicago, lifting the Bulls to an 80-75 lead heading to the final period. COLUMBIA, Mo. Lorenzo Mauldin Jersey . -- Michael Sam was just another recruit when he left his small Texas hometown and arrived in Missouri. Playing for the Tigers, he turned into a private loquacious leader ready to make a trailblazing announcement. The defensive star wants to become the first openly gay NFL player. "I told him: This is going to be mammoth," coach Gary Pinkel said Monday, a day after Sam came out to the world. "I dont have a word, OK, for how big this is going to be." Its a bigger deal for the older generation. Sams teammates and acquaintances easily made the adjustment, plus he proved himself on the field. "Hes a leader," former 49ers great running back Roger Craig said. "I would definitely welcome him on my team. Id play with him any day. I like people who stand up for themselves." Sam revealed he was gay at one of the football teams get-acquainted dinners last summer hosted by Pinkel and assistant coaches. The next day, Pinkel said, Sam told the entire team. Realizing the enormity of the situation, Pinkel left the next move up to the senior who blossomed into one of the best defensive ends in the country -- and one surrounded by teammates who didnt worry one bit about sexual orientation or reveal his secret until he came out on Sunday. Athletes across the campus approve. "Love is love," basketball guard Jordan Clarkson said. "Thats their personal life." Pinkel, athletic director Mike Alden and other school officials applauded Sams courage Monday at Faurot Field. As a backdrop, the first two letters of Sams last name were etched in snow to join the giant "M" just beyond the north end zone. "Pretty cool," Pinkel said. Coaches and Sam agreed that making an announcement during the season might be a distraction. It was Sams call to skip all the weekly media days and postgame news conferences, too, the better to avoid the risk of the topic coming up. Sam broke his silence prior to the Cotton Bowl and the conversation stayed on football, just like he wanted. Sam was prompted to make his decision to come out after the Senior Bowl, where it became apparent the players sexual orientation was widely known. This meant a declaration just days before the NFL combine and shouldering the pressure that goes along with the historic declaration. "Its very clear that everybody in the NFL knew," said Howard Bragman, a consultant hired by Sams agent to help manage the announcement in the media. The NFL and many others, including the White House, publicly applauded Sams decision. President Barack Obamas spokesman, first lady Michelle Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden all called him a courageous and inspirational athlete. But now, after a few high-profile interviews, its back to silent Sam. The fifth level of the stadium was jammed with dozens of reporters for Mondays news conference but there was no sign of the star attraction. Bragman said Sam was travelling Monday to a camp at an undisclosed location where hell prepare for the combine. Though hes been a most reticent public speaker, Pinkel described Sam as a virtual chatterbox. "He drove me crazy a lot of times, he doesnt shut up sometimes," Pinkel said with a chuckle. "He talks and talks and talks. "You always know hes in with my secretary because I can hear him and I have to close the door -- I cant concentrate." Sam arrived at Missouri without fanfare. Rivals.com gave him just two stars when he was coming out of Hitchcock High School. He had 10 career starts before his breakout senior season. The All-America defensive end led the Southeastern Conference with 11 1/2 sacks and 19 tackles for loss. He was the co-SEC defensive player of the year. But Sam has been projected as a mid-level NFL draft pick, probably because hes a bit undersized at 6-foot-2 and 255 pounds and is likely headed for a transition to outside linebacker. Pinkel doesnt think the announcement will hurt Sams draft status. "Our team was able to move past it and work together," defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski said. "So why shouldnt a bunch of professional football players be able to do the same thing?" There have been a few NFL players who have come out after their playing days, including Kwame Harris and Dave Kopay. "There will be some adjustments that will have to be made, sure," Craig said. "I think it will be a learning curve for the whole league." Josh McCown Jersey .ca. Parros was hurt when the Toronto player lost his balance and pulled Parros over him to the ice. The Canadiens enforcer landed face first, lost consciousness, and was taken to hospital. On Wednesday, he was diagnosed with a concussion. "You never want to see a guy get hurt like that. Its a scary situation, I just hope hes all right," said Orr, who had already fought with Parros earlier in the game. "Its scary, its not fun to watch. I dont know what else to say," said Canadiens teammate Lars Eller. It was an ugly moment on a night that was otherwise reserved for celebration. But the injury re-opens a familiar question for hockey fans: does Tuesdays incident in Montreal change your feelings about fighting in hockey? Time and time again, NHL players have been polled about whether to ban fighting from the game and time and time again, there has been heavy resistance to removing the fisticuffs. It appears that the image of Parros being removed on a stretcher is still not ennough to sway some hockey opinions. ArDarius Stewart Jersey. . "Hockey is a game that needs fighting in it," said Ottawa Senators head coach Paul MacLean on Wednesday after his teams morning skate. TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported on Wednesday that while Flyers forward Vincent Lecavalier is sensitive to Parros injury, he says he would still vote in favour of keeping fighting. "Part of the game," Lecavalier told Dreger. Will fighting leave the game anytime soon? TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie gave his opinion on the incident during a post-game discussion with Thats Hockey host Gino Reda. "The culture of hockey is such that the decision-makers - the players, the coaches, the managers, the owners, the administrators - they dont want any appreciable difference to the games," he said. "So the debate will rage on as George Parros recovers from that, but I dont anticipate anything is going to change because it hasnt in the past." Several other fights that produced knockouts and concussions in recent memory have not produced change. Chances are the Parros injury wont either. But does Tuesdays incident in Montreal change your feelings about fighting in hockey? As always, Its Your! Call. PRETORIA, South Africa -- For five days, Oscar Pistorius endured a withering cross-examination at his murder trial from a prosecutor who pounced on apparent inconsistencies in his testimony. Wilt Chamberlain Jersey . Yet, legal analysts said Tuesday, expert witnesses who will testify for the defence could undermine the prosecutions efforts to prove Pistorius killed girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on purpose after an argument. The demeanour of the Olympian, often fumbling for answers and occasionally breaking into sobs, contrasted with that of prosecutor Gerrie Nel, who called Pistorius a liar and unleashed volleys of barbed questions. Social media buzzed that Pistorius is in deep trouble -- a South African talk show host wryly observed that the double-amputee runner had not "covered himself with glory" when his cross-examination ended Tuesday -- but experts said the trial has a long way to go. "Until the defence presents the rest of their case, you cant really evaluate the significance of any potential concessions that he may have made," said Kelly Phelps, a senior lecturer in the public law department at the University of Cape Town. The trial, which began March 3 and is expected to hear testimony until mid-May, reached a key stage last week when Pistorius took the stand to testify about the circumstances of Steenkamps killing in his home before dawn on Feb. 14, 2013. The Paralympic champion, 27, says he shot the 29-year-old model through a closed toilet door after mistaking her for an intruder, but Nel catalogued what he said were conflicts in Pistorius story that prove he made it up. The prosecution provided a "very clear narrative for the first time" of what it says happened on the night of Steenkamps death, Phelps said. The judge, she said, must decide whether Pistorius inconsistencies were a result of his clumsily trying to polish a story that is true in its fundamentals, or instead revealed an "elaborate coverup plot" after he murdered his lover. Phelps said the prosecution accused Pistorius of changing his account mostly on "smaller details" but that he had stuck to the "core parts of his story." Some commentators have speculated that Pistorius could face a lesser homicide charge that still carries long prison time in the event of a conviction. Still, during cross-examination, Pistorius gave a sometimes muddled account of the shooting. He said he feared for his life but also didnt intentionally shoot at anyone, prompting Nel to query if his defence was self-defence or "involuntary action." Inconsistencies in the athletes testimony include his statement that Steenkamp did not scream when he shot her but later saying his ears were ringing with the first of four gunshots and he would not have heard screams. A vital part of the prosecutions case is the testimony of neighbours who said they heard a womans terrified screams on the night that Steenkamp died; the defence says they actually heard Pistorius screaming in a high-pitched voice. Pistorius credibility was further challenged by earlier testimony against him for three unrelated gun charges in which he denied any wrongdoing when questioned by Nel. Possibly in his favour was his lack of anger on the witness stand despite the prosecutions picture of him as overbearing and arrogant. Nevertheless, Marius du Toit, a former state prosecutor, magistrate and now criminal defence lawyer in South Africa, said Nel exceeded his goals in his cross-examination, even goading Pistorius into faulting his legal team while trying to clarify testimony. For example, chief defence lawyer Barry Roux said Pistorius fired two quick bursts -- the gun owners terminology for such a burst is "double tap" -- but Pistorius said he fired four shots in rapid succession. Du Toit, however, said the defence, which plans to call up to 17 witnesses, could still make it hard for the prosecution to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Pistorius is guilty of premeditated murder, which carries a penalty of 25 years to life in prison. Du Toit said he wasnt convinced that the prosecution had shown that he intended to kill, noting Pistorius fired roughly level with Steenkamps mid-section. Prosecution witnesses said the first bullet likely struck her in the hip. "If you wanted to kill someone, you would shoot in the chest or the head," du Toit said, adding that it was "not all lost" for Pistorius even though the defence has a lot of hard work to do. That work started right after Pistorius finished testifying. Roux, the defence lawyer, had the runner read out a Valentines Day card from Steenkamp that she allegedly brought him just before he killed her. In it, she tells Pistorius that she loves him. Roux then called forensic expert and former police officer Roger Dixon, who contradicted parts of the prosecutions case. Dixon said he conducted tests in Pistorius bedroom that proved it was very dark there at night, supporting Pistorius statement that he could not see Steenkamp in his bedroom on the night he killed her, and describing some aspects of the police investigation as "unprofessional." Phelps, the University of Cape Town lecturer, said Judge Thokozile Masipa could consider the prosecutors allegation that Pistorius sometimes faked distress in the witness box to wriggle out of a tough question. Otherwise, she said, the athletes outbursts would not affect the judge, who will deliver a verdict because South Africa does not have a jury system. "Her recognizing that trauma will have absolutely no bearing on her determination as to what his state of mind was when he was firing the shots," Phelps said. Lonzo Ball Jersey . The Tigers (6-2, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) overcame a spotty offensive showing with another strong performance on defence, holding the Orange (3-5, 1-3) to a season-low 170 yards of offence. Stoudt, starting a second straight game for injured quarterback Deshaun Watson, struggled much of the game with two interceptions and a fumble. But he led a 73-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter that ended with a 19-yard scoring pass to tight end Stanton Seckinger. Lakip had kicks of 38, 18 and 41 yards, the last putting Clemson ahead 9-6 for good, 9-6, in the third quarter. Wayne Gallman finished with 101 yards, the first time a running back has cracked the century mark this season for the Tigers. Stoudt was 24 of 35 and brought Clemson a victory for the second straight time after trailing in the second half. A week ago, Boston College led 13-10 before Stoudt led a touchdown drive for the 17-13 win. This time, he fought through a difficult three quarters before finally finding his footing. After Clemson moved in front on Lakips final kick, Stoudt had a 17-yard pass to Mike Williams that move the Tigers to Syracuse 23. Two plays later, he found Seckinger. Clemson iced the game with a final drive that lasted more than eight minutes to run out the clock. Syracuse freshman AJ Long, making his second career start, was sacked four times and held to 82 yards passing. Prince-Tyson Gulley ran for 80 yards, accounting for most of the rest of Syracuses offence. The Tigers enterred his one with four straight wins, one of the countrys strongest defences and an offence looking to finally get back to its high-scoring, fast-tempo self. Magic Johnson Jersey. That was the case a year ago when these teams played with the Tigers ahead 35-7 at half and cruising to a 49-14 blowout victory. This time, though, Clemsons offence continued its freefall without injured quarterback starter Deshaun Watson. The Tigers, who averaged better than 500 yards a game, the previous two seasons, managed just 157 in the opening half and gave the ball away with two fumbles and an interception. Clemson entered the contest with six interceptions on the season, the second fewest in the ACC. Two of the turnovers led to Syracuse points. Cornerback Brandon Reddish picked off Stoudts pass with the Tigers in Syracuse territory. The Orange turned that mistake into Cole Murphys 43-yard field goal. Clemson was driving inside the Syracuse 10 right before halftime when C.J. Davidson mishandled a pitch from Stoudt and Syracuse defensive end Robert Welsh recovered. Welsh had a 42-yard interception return touchdown a week earlier in Syracuses 30-7 win at Wake Forest. Clemson got the ball back one final time with 1:22 left when linebacker Dyshawn Davis stripped Stoudt of the ball on the Tigers 22. While Clemsons defence pushed the Orange back, Murphy added a career-long 50-yard field goal -- Syracuses longest kick in six years -- for a 6-3 halftime lead. The Tigers have only one less productive half, points-wise, in offensive co-ordinator Chad Morris four seasons than they did against Syracuse -- when they were shutout the second half of a 45-21 loss at Georgia on Aug. 30. The Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens will meet for the second time in less than a week, as the clubs complete their season series Sunday at the Bell Centre. Jean Segura Jersey . You can catch all of the action live on TSN Radio 690 with coverage beginning at 5pm et. The Canadiens posted a 2-1 victory at Calgary on Tuesday, with P.A. Parenteau providing the lone goal of the shootout to lift the Habs past the Flames. It was the second straight win in the series for Montreal, but Calgary still has seven victories over the past 10 meetings. The Flames have struggled in Montreal, losing two of three and six of their last eight in La belle province. The Canadiens, however, followed the recent win over the Flames with Thursdays overtime setback in Vancouver. The 3-2 loss came at the end of a 1-1-1 road trip for the Habs. Montreal hopes to get back on track on home ice, where the Canadiens will play two straight and six of their next seven games. The Habs own a perfect 4-0 mark at the Bell Centre this season. The Canadiens did well to earn a point from Thursdays tilt in B.C. Vancouver led 2-0 after Brad Richardson tallied early in the third period, but Alex Galchenyuk and Max Pacioretty both scored in the final 10 minutes of regulation to send the game to OT. It didnt look like it on the scoreboard but we came out with a lot of jump tonight, said Pacioretty. Theres a lot of positives to take from this trip. Daniel Sedin scored the winner for the Canucks at 2:45 of overtime. The decisive goal came on the power play after Montreals Tom Gilbert was called for interference 50 seconds into the extra session. Carey Price stopped 27 shots in the loss and he is expected to start on Sunday. Price is 3-4-0 with a 2.68 goals against average in his career against the Flames. Calgary lost its second straight game in last Tuesdays loss to the Habs, but the Flames snapped the slide with Fridays home victory over Nashville. Johnny Gaudreau scored the deciding goal for the Flames, who used three third- period tallies to fuel a 4-3 comeback victory over the Predators. Calgary trailed 2-1 after 40 minutes, but Jiri Hudler, T.J. Brodie and Gaudreau all scored in the first seven minutes of the third period to give the Flames control of the game. Hudler tied the game at 2:36 of the third period and Brodie put the Flames in front with a power-play tally less than two minutes later. Gaudreau made it 4-2 Calgary at the 6:37 mark, notching the eventual game-winner before Nashvilles James Neal made it a one-goal game with 9:13 remaining. Tonight was a great job by our guys. Its about momentum, Flames head coach Bob Hartley said. Whenever you can control the puck, that is the best defense. You make plays, youre creative. We encourage everyone on the team to play like this. Sean Monahan and Gaudreau each tallied a goal and an assist for the Flames, while Jonas Hiller made 28 saves for the victory. Hiller stopped 13-of-14 shots in the all-important third period. After becoming the first Flames netminder to start consecutive games in 2014-15 on Friday, Hiller could get the start over Karri Ramo again tonight. Hiller is 2-1-3 with a 2.37 GAA in six career outings against the Canadiens, while Ramo is 1-1-1 with a 3.75 GAA versus Montreal. The Flames recalled Sve Baertschi before the game on Sunday. Calgary is beginning a five-game road trip tonight and is 4-2-0 as the guest this season. Projected Canadiens Lineup: Pacioretty - Desharnais - Weise Eller - Plekanec - Parenteau Bourque - Galchenyuk - Gallagher Moen - Malhotra - Prust Markov - Gilbert Emelin - Subban Beaulieu - Weaver Price Projected Flames Lineup: Hudler - Granlund - Gaudreau Glencross - Monahan - Jones Baertschi - Byron - Setoguchi Bollig - Bouma - McGrattan Giordano - Brodie Russell - Wideman Smid - Diaz Engelland Hiller Drew Smyly Jersey . A game that had the 21,273 in the Bell Centre seats rocking even before the puck was dropped saw NHL trade deadline addition Thomas Vanek score his first three goals as a Canadien. It saw plugger Travis Moen score a spin-around goal worthy of a first-line star. And it had a spectacular performance from Colorado rookie Nathan MacKinnon, who dazzled the crowd and the Canadiens defence for an entire shift before scoring his 23rd goal of the season in the first period. On the downside, Colorado defenceman John Mitchell was taken to hospital for tests after crashing back-first into the end boards at 8:02 of the second period. Roy had no update on his condition after the game other than that it was back injury. The game started with the spotlight on Roy, but players from both teams made sure it was game to remember as well. "I thought both teams played really well and tonight the puck bounced their way," said Roy, the former Canadiens goaltending great who was on his first trip to Montreal as an NHL coach. There was no pre-game ceremony for the player once known as Saint Patrick, but he didnt need one. The fans gave him a long, rousing ovation when he was shown on the scoreboard during the national anthems. Some wondered how the Bell Centre crowd would react to Roy, who won Stanley Cups for the Canadiens in 1986 and 1993 but later demanded a trade and was on the outs with the organization until 2008 when they retired his No. 33 jersey. "I thought they showed lot of class," said Roy. "It was nice. They didnt make a big thing and thats the way I wanted it." Brandon Prust, who left the game late in the first period with an apparent shoulder injury, returned to score a goal and set up Moens tally for Montreal (38-25-7), which won its third game in a row. Trailing by two goals, Roy pulled goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere with 2:20 left to play, but Dale Weise scored into the empty net. Max Talbot and Jamie McGinn also had goals for the Avalanche (44-20-5), which lost for only the third time in 10 games. The Avs end a three-game road trip Wednesday night in Winnipeg. Vanek had a ton of chances since he was acquired from the New York Islanders, who had got him early in the season from the Buffalo Sabres. He finally broke through against Colorado. "It was frustrating," he said. "I think Im pretty emotional out there and sometimes I show my frustration too much. "But its been a tough year moving around, trying to get your first goal with Buffalo and then a new team and then here. But I thought we were generating chances and it just didnt go in. Getting that first goal was nice. I was really pressing the last few games." The Avalaanche players clearly wanted to win for Roy, who has taken them from last to fourth in the Western Conference in one season and who is likely to be named the NHLs coach of the year. Felix Hernandez Jersey. . Roys team responded with a strong opening period. No. 1 overall draft pick MacKinnon put on a show as he ragged the puck in the Montreal zone for most of an entire shift. Then he got the puck alone in front of the net off a strange deflection and deked Carey Price at 18:03. He got 20:55 of ice time and, other than Vanek, was perhaps the best player in the game. Even Montreal coach Michel Therrien was impressed. "For an 18-year-old kid... I had the luxury of coaching great ones at 18 and 19 years old (Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin) and hes right there," said Therrien. "Hes a special player." Roy knew his players wanted to get him the victory, even though he told them to concentrate on getting the two points. "(Ryan) OReilly was hurt and I knew he wanted to play," said Roy. "(Paul) Stastny came back (from a back injury) tonight. "I knew what they were doing. I have a lot of respect for my players and I appreciate it, but I didnt want them to feel the pressure of winning a game for their coach. I wanted them to win for the team. I dont want to put myself ahead of the team. I didnt need a special night." The Canadiens bounced back in the second, as Vanek tapped one into an open goal after Desharnais lured Giguere out of his net on a rush at 7:44. Talbot was parked at the doorstep to knock in a Matt Duchene feed at 9:33, but Moen tied the score at 10:21 with his second of the year and his first since Nov. 22. Prust dove to chip the puck into the middle, where Moen caught it, then did a spin-around move to beat Giguere with a backhand. Giguere took a holding the stick penalty and Vanek made him pay as he converted a Max Pacioretty feed on a power play for the game-winner at 14:45. Montreal was on the power play again when Vanek reached behind his back to deflect an Alexei Emelin shot in at 17:40 for the hat-trick. Only two hats were thrown on the ice. Montreal fans have never been big on the hat-throwing thing. Weise added an empty-netter at 19:00, giving each member of the checking line a goal. "We were energized tonight," said Prust. "We knew it was going to be a big game. We knew they would come hard to get Patty the win, so were glad we spoiled it." Notes: It was Roys first game against Montreal since he was a player on Nov. 6, 2001. Roy opted to put Montreal native Giguere as No. 1 Semyon Varlamov sat out. Theres no promise that deals will be made immediately following the All-Star break, but a number of team executives do sense that the urgency to make a move is starting to grow. On Thursday nights Tim Hortons Thats Hockey, we addressed the wants and needs of the seven Canadian NHL teams. Granted, every team is looking for upgrades and Im certain many NHL general managers take some pleasure in playing the media game by declaring a wish list that often includes a top six forward or a top four defenceman. And its hard to imagine any of the 30 teams arent in the market for that. With that in mind, lets first take a look at the list we unveiled in Tuesdays edition of Insider Trading disclosing the initial list of players considered as trade bait with the deadline looming: Trade Bait Player NHL Team Position Antoine Vermette Arizona Coyotes Centre Tyler Myers Buffalo Sabres Defence Joffrey Lupul Toronto Maple Leafs Left Wing Jake Gardiner Toronto Maple Leafs Defence Keith Yandle Arizona Coyotes Defence Ryan OReilly Colorado Avalanche Centre Jaromir Jagr New Jersey Devils Right Wing Curtis Glencross Calgary Flames Left Wing Zbynek Michalek Arizona Coyotes Defence Erik Cole Dallas Stars Left Wing Chris Neil Ottawa Senators Right Wing Cody Franson Toronto Maple Leafs Defence Marc Methot Ottawa Senators Defence Jiri Tlusty Carolina Hurricanes Left Wing Jeff Petry Edmonton Oilers Defence Tyler Kennedy San Jose Sharks Right Wing Zack Kassian Vancouver Canucks Right Wing Matt Hendricks Edmonton Oilers Left Wing Drew Stafford Buffalo Sabres Right Wing Brad Boyes Florida Panthers Right Wing Matt Irwin San Jose Sharks Defence Michael Ryder New Jersey Devils Right Wing Kyle Brodziak Minnesota Wild Centre Ryan Carter Minnesota Wild Centre Chris Phillips Ottawa Senators Defence Paul Martin Pittsburgh Penguins Defence Tomas Fleischmann Florida Panthers Left Wing Canadian NHL Team Game Plans Toronto Maple Leafs Veteran defenceman Cody Franson is a late addition to the Trade Bait list in the likelihood he embraces unrestricted free agency. The Leafs arent willing to pay him what he will lure on the open market and based on the demand for blueliners with a right-handed shot, Franson will fetch a decent trade return once its been determined he intends to walk. And that decision should be soon. Forwards Daniel Winnik and Mike Santorelli (also pending UFAs) are drawing interest from trade circles as well and given Torontos play of late, the list of available Leaf players is starting to grow. While never impossible, any trade involving a key player is unlikely until the off-season, when other cap teams have more flexibility to take on bigger contracts. Again - anything is possible. However, Torontos expected return seems fairly specific as the Leafs are looking for good young roster players in their early twenties. Montreal Canadiens The Habs have faced adversity this season, but keep on finding ways to win and remain a top team in the Eastern Conference. A sagging power play has regained some spark and when healthy, Carey Price has performed at his usual elite standard. Trying to nail general manager Marc Bergevin down on divulging internal secrets is a near futile exercise, but he talks to enough people around the league to surmise hes not satisfied with how his team looks. And if he can add a forward to strengthen his top two lines, he will. Bergevin is also believed to be looking for a defenceman - perhaps an upgrade to whats already considered a decent top five. Ottawa Senators Wayne Scanlan of The Ottawa Citizen wrote an excellent piece this week on Senators GM Bryan Murray and by Murrays own admission, this will very likely be his last season at the helm. Murray likes what he sees on this years roster and still believes Ottawa has a chance, though the standings are continuing to paint a different picture. Its believed Murray would also like to add a top six forward - an established player with some term remaining to give the Senators some stability. Justin Tucker Jersey. Acquiring such a player is hard to do, though Murray found a way when winger Bobby Ryan was brought into town. While some believe it might be better for the Sens to wait and allow the younger players to develop, Murrays more immediate concern is his lack of roster space. Mark Borowiecki is very close to returning, which will force Ottawa to make a tough decision. Its likely that Colin Greening will be placed on waivers to open a spot. Meanwhile, the uncertainty of Marc Methots future continues to hang over the club as well. A pending UFA, Methot complements captain Erik Karlsson and is playing well. If a contract extension cant be worked out, Methot will likely be traded - which would create a large hole on Ottawas blue line. Given the spot duty assigned to veteran defenceman Chris Phillips (who has been a healthy scratch eight times this season), perhaps Murray finds a new home for a proud man who cant be happy with his limited role. All of this makes for difficult decisions for Bryan Murray and his management team to ponder. Winnipeg Jets The Jets appear to be a throwback example of hard work and chemistry paying off. Head coach Paul Maurice says he never goes to the rink concerned about how hard his team is willing to work. And it shows, as the Jets are highly regarded as one of the most difficult teams to play against. Comfortably in a playoff spot, no one in this organization is taking anything for granted. And this Jets team knows that the post All-Star grind will demand a high level of intestinal fortitude to secure that spot. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff has assets he can dangle in a trade - particularly from his defence corps. The Jets would like to add a third line right winger, but given the play of this team, Cheveldayoff might consider something more significant to bolster his chances against the Western Conferences big boys. The Jets wont mortgage their future, but if they continue to string wins together and find a way to creep into the Top 10, there will be some interesting boardroom conversations leading up to the deadline. Vancouver Canucks The Canucks continue to quietly go about their business and with far less drama than weve seen in recent years. The team is where they thought they would be at the beginning of the season - in the playoff mix, but fighting to distance themselves from the Calgary Flames and Los Angeles Kings. Now Vancouver needs scoring and the team is hopeful that the right deal will materialize to add a second line forward. Dont expect GM Jim Benning to dive into the rental pool, as the Canucks have no intention of blowing out the young talent theyve accumulated over the last couple of seasons to acquire a player destined for free agency. And the rumour mill keeps linking the Canucks to Boston, given the obvious history Benning has as the Bruins former assistant GM. Calgary Flames Remarkably, the Flames remain one of the NHLs pleasant surprises this season. Approaching the 50-game mark, they are a playoff team, while the defending Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings are not. Yes, its hard to believe. Head coach Bob Hartley has developed a winning culture in Calgary and similar to the job Maurice has done in Winnipeg, the buy-in from the players is impressive. But Flames GM Brad Treliving knows where his team is on the rebuilding road and while it might be enticing to fast-track the plan, he continues to evaluate his group to make sure he has the long-term pieces in the right fit. The team would like to add a defenceman and will remain open to all trade possibilities. But young key players wont be sacrificed based on where the Flames are positioned in the standings on Mar. 2. Edmonton Oilers General manager Craig MacTavish has faced enough challenges to last 10 lifetimes, but his to-do list is as long as ever as the club braces for another offseason of selling hope. Its hard to imagine the Oilers being quiet in the weeks leading up to deadline, but with three picks in the Top 35 in this Junes draft, MacTavish may wait to do the heavy lifting until the summer. If Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle or another member of the Oilers core is to be included in a game-changing swap, then this type of auction will clearly draw the most action in the off-season. Goaltending and defence are a top priority for the Oilers and another quality centre would help as well. Defenceman Jeff Petry will attract interest on the trade front and could be used in a package to satisfy one of the teams needs, or for another draft pick that the Oilers can use to load up for June. TORONTO – You know a baseball team is red hot when its rolling out different heroes each day. Patrick Sharp Jersey . Edwin Encarnacion carried the torch for two days at Fenway Park this week; Melky Cabrera and Jose Bautista have had their moments; lately Anthony Gose has contributed. In Friday nights edge-of-your-seat, 3-2 victory over Oakland, the heroes were different. One of them made his Blue Jays debut, Liam Hendriks, a 25-year-old who grew up on the other side of the world in Australia. Just up from Triple-A Buffalo, hed managed to fly his wife, Kristi, up from Fort Myers, Florida. His mother, Debbie, was home watching him pitch, sipping a Saturday morning coffee while he toiled on a Friday night. Another, Steve Tolleson, is playing for his third major league team and in his sixth big league organization. Oh, and theres still Encarnacion, although it was his defence Blue Jays fans would celebrate on this night, his home run bat tucked away but likely to reemerge at any moment. Hendriks pitched 5 2/3 innings of one run ball. He allowed three hits and walked three Athletics. At times he was hit hard, needing almost every inch of the 375 feet to the power alleys and the 400 feet to dead centerfield. But, as is the case when a team is rolling, things seem to go its way. "I felt really good early," said Hendriks. "I kind of got away from my game plan a little bit in the last couple of innings but the defence picked me up big time. I mean, when youve got guys like this behind you it gives you that much extra confidence that you can go out there and youre not having to strike everybody out. Its fantastic." Entering the game Hendriks had two career wins and an ERA north of six spread over parts of three seasons with Minnesota. He won his third career game. His ERA came down. The 30-year-old Tolleson contributed the big offensive blow, a two out, two-run home run in the second that broke the scoreless tie and gave Toronto a lead it wouldnt relinquish. The less talked about part of his game were the two big double plays turned in the third and seventh innings. On both occasions, Oaklands Nick Punto slid hard and fair into Tolleson. Each time, he made the turn. "Thats what a second baseman is here to do," said Tolleson. "The main goal is to get the ball turn. On this turf it allows us to play a little bit deeper but when you play deeper it also gives you time to get on you a little bit more. We got some big ones turned today and it was great to come out with that win." Encarnacion made two great defensive plays. Holding on a runner with two out in the sixth, he came off the bag and dived to his right to snag Josh Reddicks hard hit ground ball. Encarnacion sprung to his feet and slid into first, beating a hustling Reddick to the bag by a couple of steps. Then in the eighth, Oakland had two on and one out. The Jays led, at the time, 3-1. Yoenis Cespedes hit a flare to shallow right field. Encarnacion tracked the ball, making an over-the-shoulder, basket catch for the second out. "The last week or so I think hes played as good as Ive ever seen play over there," said manager John Gibbons. "That ball over his head today, I dont know if thats going to hit fair or foul but thats huge at that moment. Eddie, hes a big guy but hes a pretty good athlete." The Jays have won four in a row, nine of 11 and 14 of 19. R.A. Dickey will make the start on Saturday afternoon and with the forecast calling for a clear day and 23C, the roof may be open. Oakland will counter with former Blue Jay Jesse Chavez. REYES DEFENCE There have been times, since his return from tightness in his right hamstring, that Jose Reyes has had trouble getting to ground balls which require a number of strides to either his left or his right. Reyes disputes any suggestion hes struggled defensively. "I think Ive been playing very good defence," Reyes told TSN.ca. "I feel like everything is there. Last year I had a tough time going to my left side because my ankle but this year my ankle has been 100-percent. I feel like Im moving around the field very good. I have no problem." Reyes is right on both counts. His defence is much better than last year and he can blame his ankle injury for decreased range. According to fangraphs.com Reyes Ultimate Zone Rating (UZR), a mathematical equation which calculates the number of runs saved or given up by a defender, is -1.1 so far this year. Thats a big improvement over his -5.3 of 2013. Still, the calculation suggests Reyes is an average to below-average defender. The great equalizer is Reyes plus arm. Typically, if he gets to the ball he will throw the runner out. Reyes insists hes healthy. The way hes running the bases, hes stolen seven and been caught only once and has appeared comfortable stretching base hits into doubles, reflects his claim. Running the bases and playing shortstop make different demands on the body. "When you run the bases you just run the bases but when you go side to side there are different steps you have to make," said Reyes. "I think its a little different. But like I said, everything feels good. My hamstring now, thank God, is 100-percent. I can go full out no problem." JANSSEN BACK IN FORM Casey Janssen is a perfect six-for-six in save opportunities since his return from an oblique strain on May 12. He hasnt thrown more than 19 pitches in any of his six appearances – that number reached in his first outing – and hes had a runner in scoring position only once. For a guy who missed most of spring training due to shoulder discomfort and then didnt throw for most of April thanks to the oblique problem, Janssen hasnt missed a beat. Dont expect a cake and balloons celebration, though. "Im not satisfied unless Im darn near perfect," said Janssen. "Thats the expectation I put on myself. I havent thought of it as Oh, Im doing so great, Im just doing what I hope and expect to do." Janssen picked up his fourth and fifth saves on Tuesday and Wednesday nights in Boston. Manager John Gibbons said after the game on Wednesday he wouldnt use Janssen on a third-straight day. Then, on Thursday afternoon, Gibbons suggested Janssen had asked not to be ruled out. Turns out there was no save situation in the series finale, a 7-2 Blue Jays win, but would Janssen have been available? "Do I think I could have? Yes. Do I think that in a smart, perfect world, do they need to push that right then? Probably not," said Janssen. "Its a long year. Weve got hopefully a lot of wins to come if we continue to play like were going to play were going to be in a race in August and September. I think thats when you push guys a little bit more to their limits." With an inning under his belt in Fridays 3-2 win, Janssen has pitched on three of the last four days and on four of the last seven. Time will tell how he holds up but since his return, hes answered the call each time hes been needed. ROGERS DESIGNATED FOR ASSIGNMENT The Blue Jays are loathe to expose pitching depth to waivers but thanks to his poor start and the need to create a roster spot for Friday nights starter, Liam Hendriks, reliever Esmil Rogers was designated for assignment. "Hed been scuffling," said manager John Gibbons. "We had to make a move with somebody. We want to get a look at Rasmussen and see what he can do." After a solid 2013 season, his first in Toronto, which saw Rogers pitch effectively in relief and make 20 starts to cover injuries in the rotation, he never got on track this year. In 16 relief appearances, 20 2/3 innings, Rogers posted a 6.97 ERA and a 5.34 FIP. Most egregious was the home runs against number. The five Rogers allowed was the most on the pitching staff, starters included. Rogers final appearance came on Wednesday at Fenway Park. He entered the game in the eighth with the Blue Jays leading 6-1. He was touched for three runs on three hits and turned a comfortable lead into a nailbiter. "I dont think you can pin it on one outing," said Gibbons. "Its been a struggle for him." Rogers, 28, was acquired from Cleveland for Yan Gomes and Mike Aviles on November 3, 2012. He was, indirectly, the asset the Blue Jays had from John Farrells departure to the Red Sox. Rogers is owed $1.85 million this season. Gustav Forsling Jersey . Then again, he really was at his home away from home. "It was nice to sleep in my own bed last night," Shields said after pitching Kansas City past the San Diego Padres 8-0 Wednesday. Cody Franson Jersey .C. -- Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith has been ruled out for Sundays game against the Atlanta Falcons. http://www.officialblackhawksauthority.com/glenn-hall-blackhawks-jersey-c-24/ . The Detroit Tigers closer blew a three-run lead in the ninth inning Wednesday night against the Dodgers.BEIJING, China - Canadas Kevin Koe is on the playoff bubble at the world mens curling championship after splitting his games Wednesday at Capital Gymnasium. The veteran skip and his Calgary-based team beat Switzerlands Peter de Cruz 8-4 before dropping a 6-2 decision to Swedens Oskar Eriksson in the evening draw. "Its disappointing, that was a big game for us and we couldnt pull (it) out," said Koe. "Thats a tough one. Just one of those games where we would build a big end and hed come up with a good shot and I couldnt answer. "I had a few chances. I missed a triple for three (in the sixth end) and kind of miscalled the line again. Just one of those games — off by a couple inches." Canada was tied with Switzerland at 6-3 after 14 draws of play. Norways Thomas Ulsrud was in first place at 8-1 and Japans Yusuke Morozumi was next at 7-2. Round-robin play wraps up Thursday with Canada set to play Germanys Johnny Jahr and Scotlands Ewan MacDonald. The top four teams will make the playoffs. Canada still has a chance to qualify for the 1-2 Page Playoff game Friday. The winner of that game advances straight to the gold-medal game and the loser will play in Saturdays semifinal against the winner of the 3-4 Page Playoff game. The 33-4 loser and semifinal loser will play for the bronze medal Sunday before the gold-medal game. Brandon Saad Jersey. Sweden scored six single points in the win over Canada, including steals in the second, fifth and sixth ends. Eriksson moved into a fifth-place tie with Chinas Rui Liu at 5-4. "That win was huge," Eriksson said. "We lost to Switzerland this morning so we had to win this to stay in the race. We made some big shots. I made an important double in the second end to stay alive or else we would lose four. We played really good after that. "Our goal is to get into the playoffs and finish off with a medal." Norway locked up a playoff spot with an 11-2 rout of Russias Evgeny Arkhipov (1-8). Japan, meanwhile, scored a deuce in the 10th end for an 8-7 win over Germany. Koe won gold at his only previous appearance at the 2010 world championship in Cortina dAmpezzo, Italy. "Our backs are against the wall and we just have to worry about making the playoffs," he said. "I dont know what all the scenarios are but if we can get to 8-and-3, we know well be in the playoffs. Weve come through the long way in the playoffs a lot of times. "Just get us in there, give us a chance and we like our chances." Cheap NFL JerseysWholesale JerseysWholesale NFL JerseysJerseys From ChinaWholesale NFL JerseysCheap NFL JerseysCheap Jerseys ' ' '
Boston Bruins defenceman Dennis Seidenberg will miss the remainder of the 2013/14 season with a torn ACL and MCL, the team announced on Saturday. John Wall Jersey . His recovery time is expected to be six to eight months. Seidenberg was injured in the third period of Fridays 5-0 victory over the Ottawa Senators, when he got his leg tangled with forward Cory Conacher. In 34 games this season, the 32-year-old defenceman has one goal and nine assists as well as a plus-11 rating. Gilbert Arenas Jersey . - Titans quarterback Jake Locker will miss the rest of the season with a Lisfranc injury to his right foot, leaving Tennessee trying to rally with Ryan Fitzpatrick. Otto Porter Jersey . Joining him in this years class were Switzerlands Patrick Huerlimann and Norways Eigil Ramsfjell. The announcement was made at the world mens curling championship at Capital Indoor Stadium in China. http://www.authenticbasketballshopwizards.com/ . -- Josh Smith made a 3-pointer as time expired and finished with 20 points to lift the Detroit Pistons to a 99-98 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday night in both teams exhibition finale. NEW YORK -- Rather than ban home plate collisions outright, Major League Baseball and its players adopted a rule limiting them this season. In what both sides said was a one-year experiment, the rule allows collisions if the catcher has the ball and is blocking the runners direct path to home plate, and if the catcher goes into the basepath to field a throw to the plate. "Its not a radical departure from what it had been," Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon said. The new rule, 7.13, states "a runner attempting to score may not deviate from his direct pathway to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher (or other player covering home plate)." A runner violating the rule shall be declared out, even if the fielder drops the ball. "Its good, I think it takes away the malicious intent behind the play at the plate," Texas Rangers catcher J.P. Arencibia said. "Obviously the runner doesnt always have to slide, and the catcher still has the ability to block the plate once he has the ball in hand." Along with the rule, the sides agreed to a pair of comments umpires use for interpretation. The first comment says "the failure by the runner to make an effort to touch the plate, the runners lowering of the shoulder, or the runners pushing through with his hands, elbows or arms, would support a determination that the runner deviated from the pathway in order to initiate contact with the catcher in violation." The comment says players who slide appropriately are not in violation of the rule. The second comment says that "unless the catcher is in possession of the ball, the catcher cannot block the pathway of the runner as he is attempting to score." The runner shall be declared safe if the catcher violates that provisiion. Wes Unseld Jersey. In addition, it is not a violation "if the catcher blocks the pathway of the runner in order to field a throw, and the umpire determines that the catcher could not have fielded the ball without blocking the pathway of the runner and that contact with the runner was unavoidable." "There are some things that often times can make the water a little muddy," union head Tony Clark said after meeting with the New York Yankees. "Over the course of the off-season, the concern was protecting players, but trying to draw up something that not only made sense on paper, but also was going to make sense to the players that were playing on the field." The umpire crew chief can use the new video-review system to determine whether the rule was violated. "It stops guys just going out of their way just to try to dislodge the baseball when they (catchers) have the plate," Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington said. Debate over plate collisions has intensified since May 2011, when San Franciscos Buster Posey was injured as the Marlins Scott Cousins crashed into him at the plate. Posey, an All-Star catcher, sustained a broken bone in his lower left leg and three torn ligaments in his ankle, an injury that ended his season. In Game 5 of last years AL championship series, Detroit backstop Alex Avila was pulled a couple of innings after being run over at the plate by Bostons David Ross, a fellow catcher. "I think its fair. A runners path is to home plate," Oakland catcher Derek Norris said. "Any deviation and hes not trying to score, hes trying to harm. A runner going out of the basepath trying to break up a double play is declared out. This is the same concept as a double-play slide." LOS ANGELES -- The Lakers have been giving playoff-contending teams more trouble over the past week than clubs that are way out of contention -- like themselves. Rudy Gobert Jersey . Chris Kaman had a season-high 28 points along with 17 rebounds while starting at centre for the vertigo-stricken Pau Gasol, Jodie Meeks scored 22 points, and Los Angeles snapped the Phoenix Suns six-game winning streak with a 115-99 victory Sunday night. It came just five days after the Lakers put a crimp in the New York Knicks post-season plans with a 31-point drubbing at Staples Center. In between that game and this one were a pair of road losses to the league-worst Milwaukee Bucks and the Minnesota Timberwolves, who beat the Lakers by 36 points Friday night. "Were trying to be the player-haters of the year. Thats definitely what were trying to do, and we embrace it," said point guard Kendall Marshall, who had 13 points and 11 assists. "We want to keep teams out of the playoffs and mess up seedings. Thats our motivation right now. Any type of motivation we can get to grow as a team is good for us right now." The undermanned Lakers shot 53 per cent from the field, avoiding what would have been Phoenixs first season sweep over them since 2004-05. The Suns won the first three meetings by an average margin of 13.3 points, including a 117-90 rout on Dec. 23 at US Airways Center. This was the first meeting between the teams in 2 1/2 months. "I dont know if we had a single guy who came with the energy that they usually have," coach Jeff Hornacek said. "Weve had games like this before, where they think theyre just going to show up and win a game. Were not good enough to do that. These guys have been winning games lately because theyve been focused in, but tonight they just werent." The 25-48 Lakers beat a team with a winning record for only the eighth time all season. Gasol missed his fourth straight game because of his ailment, joining Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Xavier Henry and Jordan Farmar on the inactive list. Gerald Green scored 22 points off the bench and Goran Dragic added 17 for the Suns, who missed their first 11 shots from 3-point range and finished 8-for-36 from behind the arc against a defence that came in having allowed an average of 119.1 in their previous 16 games and 108.9 overall -- second-worst in the league behind Philadelphia. The Suns shot 38.5 per cent overall. "Theyre not shooting them to miss them," an agitated Hornacek said. "They all thought they were going to make them, and its not always going to be there. So at that point, quit shooting them and drive to the basket." The Suns first loss since March 17 at Brooklyn dropped them to 44-30 and put them into a tie with idle Dallas for seventh place in the Western Conference standings, a half-game ahead of Memphis. "Our schedule gets a lot harder after this," Hornacek said. "Play all the top teams now in the next six or seven games, so thats why this game was so important. I mean, if this happens against Oklahoma City or the Clippers, then fine. But this team is not a playoff team, so thats why its disappointing." Kaman, an 11-year veteran in his first season with the Lakers, secured his sixth double-double of the season before halftime with 18 points and 10 rebounds to help Los Angeles build a 61-43 lead at intermission. "Chris can do that. He has talent, and he came ready to play," coach Mike DAntoni said. Dragic, who came in with a team-best 20.6 scoring average, got seven of the Suns first 13 points -- but didnt get another until his driving layup with 8:39 left in the third quarter trimmed the Lakers lead to 70-48. The Suns, who came in fifth in the league in 3-point shooting at 37.7 per cent, didnt get their first one until Markieff Morris ended their drought with 8:45 left in the second quarter. His brother Marcus drained another one 34 seconds later and Green made a three-point play with 7:41 left in the half, tying it at 31 after Suns trailed by 13. But the Lakers responded with a 28-9 run that included nine points by Meeks, and Ryan Kelly capped the rally with a pair of free throws to give Los Angeles a 59-40 cushion with 1:06 left in the third. The Suns got no closer than 11 points with 3:43 to play. "They made a few runs and killed us. We didnt know how to stop them," Dragic said. "I think our intensity was really bad. Its like no one wants to play in the playoffs -- or at least it seems like that. " NOTES: The longest winning streak in Suns history was 17 games in 2006-07, under DAntoni. ... Kaman received a technical foul from referee Derrick Stafford after getting called for an offensive foul with the Lakers leading 80-55. ... MOSCOW - Russian athletes will have to scale back their training plans for next years Olympics in Brazil because of the countrys economic crisis, deputy sports minister Yuri Nagornykh said on Friday. Wily Peralta Jersey .Training camps abroad can be crucial in acclimatizing athletes for Rio de Janeiros tropical conditions, but they are rapidly becoming unaffordable after the ruble lost almost half of its value against the U.S. dollar in the last 12 months. With the rubles value low and the Sports Ministrys budget facing cuts, athletes should stay in Russia rather than train abroad in order to spend less of the currency reserves, Russian agency R-Sport quoted Nagornykh.Officials will select priority sports and athletes for scarce funding, Nagornykh said. The financial problems test everyones professionalism, he added. The measures affect athletes preparing for the Rio Olympics and the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, he added.Nagornykhs comments come almost a year after Russia topped the medal table at home in the Sochi Winter Olympics, following lavish preparations which outstripped any previous Russian Olympic effort, with entire teams of athletes sometimes based abroad for months.During that time, Russia also invested heavily in training facilities at home, especially for winter sports, which will be useful in the drive to cut costs, Nagornykh said.Thank God, in the last five to six years, we very seriously updated our arsenal of training bases, he said, adding that performance standards would be maintained.Everything thats been planned that, without which we wont be able to prepare the teams for the Olympic Games in Rio and Korea, will be provided by the ministry, the federations, and in co-operation with the Russian Olympic Committee, he said. ARLINGTON, Texas -- Nelson Cruz took a slow trot around the bases after hitting a towering three-run homer in his return to Texas. The Baltimore Orioles slugger wasnt really savoring the moment. He was cramping so bad that he almost didnt even take that final at-bat in the eighth inning. Cruz hit the first pitch thrown by Shawn Tolleson, the fourth Rangers reliever, an estimated 404 feet deep into the left field seats to cap a tiebreaking six-run outburst as the Orioles won 8-3 on Tuesday night. "We were debating, he and I were," manager Buck Showalter said. "He go about halfway down the first, and that was a cramp trot." Likening his first game against the Rangers to one of his first days in the big leagues, when everything went so fast, Cruz said he just tried to stay in the moment and stay focused. "Kind of weird. Going from the other side of the plate is totally different than coming around like I used to," Cruz said. "It was overall a good day." Cruz was the 2011 AL championship series MVP on the way to the Rangers second consecutive World Series. When introduced before drawing a walk in the first, Texas fans responded with an extended ovation. While there were some boos, those seemed to be outnumbered by fans who called "Cruuuuuzz!" like they used to do when the left fielder was on their side the previous eight seasons. Heading into free agency last year, Cruz missed the final 50 regular-season games for the Rangers for violating baseballs drug agreement. Cruz turned down a $14.1 million qualifying offer in November from the Rangers, who likely would have used him primarily as a designated hitter if he had accepted. He went through the entire off-season before signing an $8 million, one-year deal with the Orioles early in spring training. "I havent seen him in a while and I got to see him and talk to him, playing around a little bit. It was a great feeling. I didnt like anytime he poopped one," Rangers shortstop Elvis Andrus said. Jonathan Villar Jersey. "Ive seen too many when he was on this side, but hes a talented guy. Whenever hes on, he can carry a team." Through 55 games with the Orioles, Cruz is hitting .313 and leads the majors with 21 homers and 55 RBIs. Adam Jones matched a career high with four hits, including a homer off the right-field pole leading off the Baltimore fourth. Rookie catcher Caleb Johnson had a tiebreaking RBI double in the eighth. Brian Matusz (2-1) went 1 2-3 innings in relief of Ubaldo Jimenez, who held Texas to one run and four hits while striking out five over 5 2-3 innings. The Montreal Alouettes announced Tuesday that they have acquired the return specialist from Calgary, as well as the Stampeders fifth-round draft pick in the 2014 CFL Canadian Draft.Maybe the best way to ride like Shaun White is to learn from Shaun White. The worlds most famous snowboarder agreed to a deal with his coach, Bud Keene, to work with young riders at his Keenes BK Progression Camps around the United States and the world.Keene and White have teamed for two Olympic gold medals and 13 Winter X Games titles over the past 12 years. Keene has been running his snowboarding and freeskiing camps for the last three years, and starting in 2015, White has agreed to join him for a handful of camps.Weve had so much success working together, Keene said. Weve learned so much about each other and the process and we want to bring that to more boys and girls. Its not just about winning the X Games and Olympic gold medals. Its the process of self-discovery, the effort, the reward, the accomplishment and the challenge. Weve both learned a ton together.Though White is nowhere near retiring, he has long been cultivating his out-of-competition career — with sponsorship deals, his band, Bad Things, and, most recently, the majority stake he took in the Air and Style snowboard and freeskiing event that he once competed in.Working in Keenes camps is another part of that — and something White is doing to help give back to an industry that has made him a multimillionaire and a household name. Hes doing it at a time when some figures show snowboardings once-exponential growth to be slowing, and with industry leaders trying to makke it more kid-friendly. Jesse James Jersey. I get that 100 per cent as much from working with a 6- or 12-year-old as much as I do with Shaun.White finished fourth on the halfpipe at the Olympics last year — a result that came after a tumultuous winter filled with injuries and schedule changes. The setback, Keene said, hasnt diminished his competitive spirit.Hes still, hands down, the best halfpipe rider in the world, and not by a small increment, Keene said.Whites 2015 contest debut could come later this month at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado.Meanwhile, hes in training and could show up, at any time, at one of Keenes camps. For a long time, Shaun and I realized we have something special and it really has nothing to do with the X Games, the Olympics or the gold medals, Keene said. (SportsNetwork. James Rodriguez Jersey .com) - The Ottawa Senators will try to record consecutive wins for the first time in over a month when they visit the lowly Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday for the opener of a home-and-home series. The Senators halted a two-game slide with Mondays shootout decision against visiting Philadelphia. It was only the fourth win in the last 12 games for Ottawa, which hasnt won two in a row since a season-best three-game winning streak from Nov. 5-9. Jason Spezza scored in the third round of the shootout to lift Ottawa to a 5-4 triumph over the Flyers. Spezza was the final shooter for Ottawa and he slowed down in front of the net before deking to the forehand and stuffing the puck in. Sean Couturier then rung his wrister off the right post to end the game. "We talked about getting more consistent in our play," said Spezza. "We all knew that if we can be on the same page, well have better results and its starting to show." Clarke MacArthur scored twice and Kyle Turris and Patrick Wiercioch each posted a goal for the Senators, who came into the game having lost four of five. Craig Anderson gave up four goals on 29 shots, but stopped all three attempts in the shootout to earn the win. With the Senators playing on back-to-back nights, Robin Lehner could get the start in net for Ottawa on Tuesday. The Senators, who will host the Sabres on Thursday, are 7-6-2 as the road team this season. Ottawa has held the upper hand against the Sabres in recent seasons, winning seven of the last nine games in this series. However, all but two of the Sens seven victories during that stretch have come by a single goal. The Sens and Sabres met for the first of four meetings this season back on Oct. 4 in Buffalo and Ottawa recorded a 1-0 win. Erik Karlsson scored with 1:35 left in the third period for the Senators and Anderson stopped all 35 shots for the shutout, his second career white-washing against the Sabres. Ottawa has claimed four of the last five meetings against the Sabres in Buffalo. After this weeks home-and-home set, the Sabres and Sens wont meet again until they cap their season series on Feb. 6 in Ottawa. With only 14 points through 30 games, the Sabres are still sitting at the bottom of the NHL standings and they enter Tuesdays tilt having lost three straight and eight of their last nine games. Its been a season-long struggle for Buffalo and things havent gotten any better since the club fired head coach Ron Rolston last month and replaced him with Ted Nolan on an interim basis. The Sabres were 4-15-1 under Rolston this season and are just 2-7-1 in their first 10 games since the coaching change. Buffalo last played on Saturday when it dropped a 3-2 regulation decision in Montreal. Brandon Prust and Tomas Plekanec both tallied a goal and an assist for the Habs and Montreal goaltender Carey Price stopped 23 shots to post the win. Tyler Ennis had a goal and an assist for the Sabres and Zemgus Girgensons accounted for the teams other goal. Jhonas Enroth allowed three goals on 19 shots in the defeat. "I couldve come up with one of those saves. It wasnt good enough tonight. All three were one-timers, but I think I could have stopped one of those goals," said Enroth. Ryan Miller is expected to get the start Tuesday and is 15-18-4 with a 2.67 goals against average in 38 career games against the Senators. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. Custom Indiana Pacers Jerseys . -- The MRI determined the hit caused no further damage to Peyton Mannings tender right ankle. Now, Manning and the Broncos are curious what the NFL thinks of that hit. Interim coach Jack Del Rio said the Broncos have sent replays to the league offices of Corey Liugets dive at Mannings ankles in the closing minutes of Denvers 28-20 win over San Diego. "In the rules, there are certain areas you can hit and certain areas that are supposed to be protected," Del Rio said Monday. "And we thought that got into an area that was supposed to be protected." Manning, whose ankles have been hurting since games against Jacksonville and Indianapolis last month, stayed down after Liuget dove at him following a completed pass that iced the game with 1:44 left. Manning limped through the rest of the game and in the locker room afterward. An MRI on Monday showed no further damage to the ankle, which was heavily taped throughout the Chargers game. Del Rio said Manning would play next Sunday in Denvers AFC West showdown against Kansas City. The quarterbacks practice schedule will be determined later in the week. "But hell definitely play this week," Del Rio said. "Hes ready to roll and thats good news." Though it only lasted a brief moment, the sight of Manning wincing in pain on the ground served as a chilling reminder of how fragile Denvers season could be. Manning added four more touchdowns against the Chargers to bring his total to 33 on the season -- tied with Tom Brady for most through nine games in NFL history. But theres still validity to the point Broncos executive John Elways made when he signed Manning two offseasons ago: "I dont have a Plan B. Were going with Plan A." On Monday, Del Rio was asked about Mannings backup, Brock Osweiler: "A good young player that is better in his second year than he was as a rookie. Continuing to develop. The arrow is up on him." Manning got sacked two times against the Chargers and hit five more. Hes been sacked a total of 12 times and hit 27 in the seven games since Chris Clark replaced the injured Ryan Clady at left tackle. In three straight games, Clark has allowed Manning to be sacked and stripped from the blind side. And next up come the Chiefs, who lead the league with 36 sacks, including 11 by Justin Houston and 9 by Tamba Hali. "Were definitely on high alert, wanting to protect our quarterback," Del Rio said. "We didnt do as well as we can and we needed to yesterday and weve got a big challenge going against a team thats sacked quarterbacks more than any team in the league." Manning, who did not speak to reporters Monday, acknowledged after the game that hed been having some trouble with the ankles the last few weeks. "Im pretty sore," he said. "They got me twice and I was hoping to make some progress after the bye week, but Im pretty sore." Notes: Del Rio said there was no structural damage to LB Nate Irvings shoulder and said the team was hopeful Irving could return to practice this week. ... The coach reported "no rust" in his first game serving as a head coach since November 2011, when he was let go by the Jaguars. He said coach John Fox was watching from his home in North Carolina. "I told him we were trying to make it a little bit easier finish for him. I was sorry we couldnt extend the lead and make it where he could rest comfortably at home," Del Rio said. ... Stat of the week!!! Torontos back-up quarterback, third-year player from Edinboro, Trevor Harris, had two special teams tackles. Rod Carew Jersey . Never a good thing when thats happening. Although Harris did show us 400-metre strength, speed and endurance while tracking down the speedy returner from West Virginia, Jock Saunders, on the missed field goal return of 121 yards. That play showcases how unpredictable and explosive our great brand of football can be here in Canada and also gives us an insight as to how you can make a bye week only two weeks into the season pay off. To ensure there were no blues, loss of continuity or complacency pertaining to the execution of schemes, the Stampeders coaching staff and players reloaded and actually extended their playbook. This was evident on Saunders missed field goal return. Coach Mark Kilam, in his tenth year coaching for the Stampeders, and fifth as special teams coordinator, had his return teams locked, loaded and dialed in, ready to pounce on this very opportunity. Anticipating a missed field goal, a wall return left was executed like clock work. Saunders, while making an acrobatic catch on the errant field goal attempt as he was tight roping the very back of the end zone, started to his left and quickly became the beneficiary of his teammates hustle and preparation. Before you knew it, Saunders, the first year Stampeder, was bursting down the sideline with Kilam himself not far behind. With sheer determination and athletic ability, Argonaut Harris, who was holding for third year kicker from Alabama-Birmingham, Swayze Waters, on the field goal attempt, somehow tracked down Saunders. Sometimes we see these extra effort and hustle plays pay off, but in this case the Stamps third year quarterback, from Eastern Washington, Bo Levi Mitchell cashed in quickly with a quick TD strike. Bang, ten-point swing just like that! Exciting and unpredictable. To have a designed missed field goal return implemented at this juncture of the season is one thing, but to be able to execute all the moving parts that are required in order to pull it off, is really heady stuff. Another example of how Calgary used the extra prep time to their advantage was the direct snap to Saunders, throwback to Mitchell, chunk it over the top to Anthony Parker. This early in the season, teams are working diligently to find rhythm and consistency in the basics of their respective systems, let alone trying to master plays like the flea-flicker. Maybe Saunders was the only running back who had the ability to throw it back to Mitchell, but to have that play in the game plan at this stage and the way it was executed, is an indicator that Calgary had the extra time and spent it wisely. If you still are not convinced that this extra week of prep time holds merit for teams and in this case the Stampeders, look to whom the Stamps had to replace in only their second game of the season. Missing was Jon Cornish, reigning Most Outstanding Player in the CFL and two electrifying receivers in Nik Lewis and Mo Price. The Stamps offence found a way to survive and even thrive. Second year receiver from Texas A&M, Jeff Fuller flexed his athletic ability and found the end zone twice, picking up some of the slack. Fourth year receiver from University of Calgary, Anthony Parker seemed well versed and more at ease performing his responsibilities, contributing four catches for 101 yards and a score. Third year running back, also from the University of Calgary, Matt Walter continues to round out into form when given the opportunity. Id also say that Walter took on more of a work load than usual in this contest because of the added time the Stamps were afforded. Walter was involved downfield in the passing game on play 115 from scrimmage, a fake screen pass. This is when he releases out of the backfield giving the defence a look like he is going to block the defender whos covering the receiver faking the hitch screen and then at the last possible moment, he turns it up the rail as the defence bites on the screen. You see it all the time in the CFL but primarily with your starters executing these timing plays, not your back ups. Not a believer yet? How about the Stampeders defence shutting down the high powered offence of Toronto led by 12-year veteran quarterback from Sacramento State, Ricky Ray. Ray had his streak of ten games in a row throwing a touchdown pass broken. We are talking about an offence that put up 559 total yards of offence against the defending Grey Cup Champion Saskatchewan Roughriders defence the week before and looked lethal. Defensive coordinator Rich Stubler had his men on point to where they held the Ray-led Argos out of the end zone for just the second time since Ray has been an Argo. Now I must say Ray and company moved the ball between the twenties but thats where the well devised defensive gameplan came into play. Dont give up the big play and make Toronto be patient series after series. In other words, play everything in front of you and rally to the ball. Certainly easier said than done, but the plan was implemented and well executed. So an early quirk/bye in the schedule actually pays off for the Stampeders as they were able to prepare, plug and play players without missing a beat and actually extend a few of their philosophies and schemes in only Week 2 of the season. Calgarys next bye week is a long ways off, coming in Week 16. Ill bet you they will embrace that bye week as much and if not more than they did in Week 2! Heres a look at the remaining bye weeks for each CFL team.
